There’s a famous saying for actors in the entertainment industry: “Once you enter Marvel or DC, you must get out.” Jason Momoa, globally recognized for his portrayal of Aquaman, is currently trying to expand his career in diverse directions.

Firstly, it’s worth noting that he has built an incredibly solid career beyond the superhero realm, with over 40 movies and series to his credit. “Fast X,” “Dune,” and “Game of Thrones” are just a few examples of his other acclaimed works.

Currently, he is involved in five upcoming projects spanning a diverse range of genres. Here, find out everything you need to know about them.

What are Jason Momoa’s next projects?

Minecraft

Yes, the Minecraft movie is officially happening. Directed by Jared Hess, who helmed the new Netlfix hit “Thelma the Unicorn, is making the film, which will hit theatres on April 4, 2025.

In this adaptation, the Ender Dragon will serve as the villain, embarking on a path of destruction that prompts a young girl and a group of unconventional adventurers to try to save the Overworld.

The cast features some of the biggest stars in the comedy industry. Jack Black is slated to portray Steve, with Jason Momoa, Jennifer Coolidge, Kate McKinnon, and Danielle Brooks in undisclosed roles thus far.

Animal Friends

It’s quite likely that this movie will bear resemblance to “If,” the family-friendly film starring Ryan Reynolds currently making waves in cinemas. Directed by Peter Atencio, best known for his work on “Key and Peele,” “Animal Friends” is set to hit theaters on August 15, 2025.

The plotline revealed by Legendary, the distribution company, is rather vague. According to it, the film revolves around two animals who form an unlikely friendship.

While the synopsis may not be particularly enticing, the star-studded cast certainly is: Ryan Reynolds, Aubrey Plaza, Jason Momoa, and Vince Vaughn are just a few of the celebrities involved in the production.

Fast X: Part 2

We will certainly be waiting a long time for this one. The second part of “Fast X” is slated to be released in June 2026, and will see Louis Leterrier come back to the director chair he occupied in the last installment.

This is the second installment of a finale for the iconic street racing franchise. Vin Diesel has stated multiple times that it will be a trilogy film series, but scarcely is known about the third part.

Jason Momoa will return as Dante Reyes, accompanied by many usuals for the franchise, such as Dwayne Johnson, Nathalie Emmanuel, Jason Statham and, of course, Vin Diesel.

Chief of War

“Chief of War” is the sole series listed among Jason Momoa’s upcoming projects. Consisting of nine episodes, it is slated for release on Apple TV+ sometime this year, although an exact premiere date has yet to be announced.

It is set to be a groundbreaking portrayal of the Hawaiian Islands’ unification, narrated from an indigenous standpoint. A Hawaiian warrior chief embarks on a violent crusade to bring together the battling islands, aiming to shield them from the looming threat of colonization.

Jason Momoa will not only star in the series but also serve as its executive producer. He will be joined by Luciane Buchanan, Temuera Morrison, Te Ao o Hinepehinga, Kaina Makua, and others.

Hand of Dante

This project is perhaps the most ambitious endeavor Jason Momoa has undertaken to date. It is adapted from Nick Tosches‘ novel of the same name, which follows a priest’s discovery of the manuscript of The Divine Comedy, written in Dante’s own hand.

Directed by Julian Schnabel, known for his acclaimed works “At Eternity’s Gate” and “Basquiat,” the adaptation delves into the dark and violent journey of a man who descends into metaphorical hell in pursuit of his forbidden and impossible love until he reaches paradise.

In this production, Jason Momoa assumes a secondary role, as the main cast is nearly legendary: Gerard Butler, Al Pacino, Oscar Isaac, and Martin Scorsese are just a few names among the ensemble.
