With Robert De Niro, Adam Scott, Michelle Monaghan and Michael Keaton leading the cast, the premise could easily invite comparisons to real criminal cases. However, the movie is not based on a true story. It is an adaptation of Alex North’s 2019 novel, which was itself born from a handful of unsettling experiences from the author’s life. According to TV Insider, North detailed some of those inspirations in a section at the end of his novel.

North’s first idea for the book had nothing to do with a real criminal case. “When I first started working on The Whisper Man, all I really knew was that I wanted to write about fathers and sons,” he wrote. “I had in mind a grieving, widowed man struggling to care for his little boy, and that the book should be a thriller, but I didn’t know much about what my main characters would be like.”

One of the experiences that stayed with him happened while he was in his 30s, when he attended a music festival with friends. After having breakfast at their hotel, North was unexpectedly told that someone had already checked out under his name and paid for the meal. The situation was eventually explained as a simple mix-up, but the stranger involved left an impression. “I asked her what the man had looked like. She couldn’t tell me. He had been in a hurry, she said, but there was nothing else about him that had stuck in her mind at all,” North recalled. “He had been so average and unremarkable that he could have been anybody — or nobody.”



The strange encounter immediately triggered his instincts as a writer. “I was unnerved,” North wrote, “but also excited.” His conclusion was simple: “The writer part of my brain was thinking, ‘Wow. This is a story.&apos;” Years later, another moment at home would give him an idea that became much more closely tied to the novel’s unsettling atmosphere.



After moving houses, North heard his son apparently speaking to someone in another room. When he asked who was there, his son replied, “Oh, I’m just playing with the boy in the floor.” North recalled his reaction clearly: “A chill went through me. But there was excitement, too, because this was a story.” He then decided, “Right then, I decided that the little boy in my book would have imaginary friends, and that some of them would become increasingly sinister over the course of the story.”



There was another experience involving his son after North’s mother-in-law died. The child said that a woman came into his room at night and hugged him. North wrote that he is “a rational person” and believed that his son was “simply doing what all of us do to some degree: creating a narrative to make sense of his grief and to comfort himself.” Still, he admitted that “a part of me was still asking that question: ‘What if?’” 



Such moments ultimately became pieces of the fictional world North created in “The Whisper Man,” rather than evidence of an actual case behind the story.

According to Sarandos, the biggest obstacle was David Fincher’s workload. “He got very busy making a film,” he said, referring to the director’s demanding filmmaking schedule. Fincher was heavily involved in “Mindhunter” as an executive producer and directed multiple episodes, overseeing much of the series’ production.



A potential third part was placed on indefinite hold while Fincher worked on “Mank,” and Netflix eventually released the cast from their contracts in 2020. Fincher later cited the show’s cost and audience size before confirming in 2023 that “Mindhunter” was over.



Sarandos also emphasized just how demanding Fincher’s approach to filmmaking could be. “David is an unbelievably meticulous creator, so he couldn’t do two things at the same time, and he certainly didn’t want to short-change either one,” he said. “So it just got pushed off and pushed off.” For the Netflix executive, the result was a third entry that remained something he personally wished had happened: “I would have loved to have seen a third season of Mindhunter.”

The Argentine science fiction series, created by Bruno Stagnaro and starring Ricardo Darín, premiered in April 2025 and follows Juan Salvo and a group of survivors after a deadly snowfall devastates Buenos Aires and reveals the beginning of an extraterrestrial invasion. 



According to Collider, Francisco Ramos, Netflix’s Vice President of Content for Latin America, has now confirmed that work on Season 2 has reached an advanced stage.

The next installment is already taking shape behind the scenes, although filming with the cast has not yet begun. “The ambition has gone to a new level. Stuff is already happening, but it’s not actually with actors on screen, it’s technical with some VFX conceptualization.”

That expanded ambition is also reflected in the production itself. According to Ramos, Season 2 will surpass its predecessor. “It’s way bigger than Season 1, not only in budget, but in terms of scope and conception.”



The first entry already required an extensive technical production. More than 35 locations were used, while over 25 sets were created through virtual production, with large portions of Buenos Aires digitally scanned and recreated through Unreal Engine. The visual effects work also involved international vendors, including DNEG, ReDefine and Scanline VFX.



For now, Netflix has not established when the actors will return in front of the cameras. Ramos acknowledged that the timetable remains uncertain, particularly because the production has to coordinate a much more demanding technical process before the cast can begin shooting.



The streamer is already thinking beyond the immediate season, too. “We need to figure out how we deliver on everything that is expected to be delivered in Season 2, while yet being able to continue with it for a potential Season 3.”



For viewers who have been waiting since the first part’s cliffhanger, the update offers the clearest picture yet of where” The Eternaut” stands. Season 2 is not simply in the early stages of planning. Netflix is already developing its technical foundation, with a larger production and a potential 2027 release now in view.

The case stems from an $11 million payment the streaming company made to help finish the project, money prosecutors said was diverted for personal use instead of production. In addition to the prison term, Rinsch was ordered to pay $11 million in restitution and will serve three years of supervised release.

Rinsch, whose feature directorial debut was the 2013 fantasy film “47 Ronin” starring Keanu Reeves, built his early reputation directing acclaimed commercials before landing one of Netflix’s most ambitious original productions. The streamer committed more than $61 million to produce a sci-fi show that began as “White Horse” before being renamed “Conquest.” However, the production repeatedly fell behind schedule, and no completed episodes were ever delivered.



Federal prosecutors argued that after Netflix transferred an additional $11 million to keep the production moving, Rinsch shifted the money into a personal brokerage account rather than using it for the series. Even so, the judge concluded that the deliberate misuse of Netflix’s funds warranted a prison sentence.



The court also received letters from people close to the filmmaker describing dramatic changes in his behavior beginning in 2019. Family members, longtime friends, and former colleagues recalled increasingly erratic communication and beliefs that raised concerns about his mental state. Keanu Reeves submitted a letter asking the court for leniency, describing the director as someone whose ambitions often exceeded what had been agreed.



The sentence brings another chapter to a close in one of Hollywood’s most unusual production disputes. Beyond the criminal penalties, Netflix is also seeking to recover more than $4.4 million in legal fees related to the years-long litigation surrounding the abandoned series, a project that became one of the streaming industry’s most costly unfinished productions.

Netflix’s newly released synopsis reads: “DCI Carl Morck heads up the maverick Dept. Q from the basement of an Edinburgh police station, charged with cases previously deemed unsolvable. This darkly humorous, propulsive show delivers all the pleasures of a procedural, but takes us into the complex mysteries not just of the cases but of the detectives themselves.”



Producer Rob Bullock revealed that the new central mystery will take the team into far more influential circles than before. “This season, Carl and his band of misfits tackle a terrible crime hidden in the highest echelons of Scottish society.” He added that “It is a story for our times: rich and powerful people who believe they are above the law,” while making clear that Carl refuses to accept that assumption. The producer also celebrated returning to work with Scott Frank, calling him a “master storyteller,” and praised Netflix “for letting them loose once again.”



Netflix executive Manda Levin also reflected on the first installment’s reception, recalling that it “made us laugh and cry; it shocked and intrigued us,” while audiences embraced both the characters and the show’s distinctive Edinburgh setting. Looking ahead, she promised that “The story of Season 2 is as darkly delicious as you’d expect,” with Carl and his “glorious gang” facing another difficult hunt as they pursue those responsible.



The series, created by Scott Frank and Chandni Lakhani, is based on Jussi Adler-Olsen’s bestselling novels but relocates the action from Copenhagen to Edinburgh. Part 1 followed Morck as he reluctantly assembled a misfit cold case unit that unraveled the disappearance of prosecutor Merritt Lingard while dealing with the aftermath of the shooting that nearly ended his career. Production on Season 2 is now underway, with filming scheduled to continue through late 2026 ahead of an expected 2027 release.

According to What’s on Netflix, filming is now underway in Scotland, where the series will continue adapting Jussi Adler-Olsen‘s bestselling crime novels while expanding the story of Detective Carl Morck and his unconventional cold case unit.



<h2>‘Dept. Q’ Season 2 Expands Its Cast as Production Moves Forward</h2>



Matthew Goode is set to return as Detective Chief Inspector Carl Morck, leading the Department Q team once again. Also reprising their roles are Alexej Manvelov as Akram Salim, Leah Byrne as Rose Dickson, Jamie Sives as James Hardy, Mark Bonnar as Stephen Burns, Kate Dickie as Moira Jacobson, Aaron McVeigh as Jasper, and Sanjeev Kohli as Martin Fleming.



Joining the series for Season 2 are “Speak No Evil” star Aisling Franciosi as Kimmie, “The Crown” actor Greg Wise as Derek Powell, and “Spy Among Friends” star Nicholas Rowe as Thomas Fulton. The new additions also include “Outlander: Blood of My Blood” actor Tony Curran as Winnie Calderwood, “The Batman” star Alex Ferns as Phil Allenbeck, “Heartstopper” actress Rebecca Root as June Lovesay, “The Queen’s Gambit” breakout Isla Johnston as Agnes, and “Judging Amy” and “The Old Man” star Amy Brenneman as Helen. 



Hamish Clark from “Monarch of the Glen” has also joined the cast as Christopher Herron, while Ross Anderson, known for “The Last Kingdom” and “Lift,” will portray Ricky Daddario.



Created by Scott Frank and Chandni Lakhani, the show follows Morck, an emotionally scarred detective who is assigned to lead a newly established cold case department after surviving a violent ambush that left his partner seriously injured. 



Operating from an overlooked basement office, Morck gradually assembles a team of unlikely investigators to reopen long-forgotten crimes. The first installment premiered on Netflix in May 2025 and earned strong critical reviews, with praise directed at its performances, writing, and central mystery.

“I Will Find You” premiered today as an eight-episode limited series adapted from Coben’s 2023 novel of the same name. The thriller stars Sam Worthington, Britt Lower, and Milo Ventimiglia, and arrives as the latest entry in Coben’s long running partnership with the streamer.



<h2>Why Is Everyone Watching I Will Find You?</h2>



The story centers on David Burroughs, played by Worthington, a father serving a life sentence for the murder of his young son. Although he was convicted of the crime, David maintains his innocence. His world changes when evidence surfaces suggesting the child may still be alive. Determined to uncover the truth, he sets out on a dangerous search that pulls him into a web of hidden connections, long buried secrets, and unexpected revelations.



Part of the show’s appeal comes from its familiar ingredients. Family trauma, unanswered questions, and shocking discoveries have become hallmarks of Coben’s work, helping adaptations such as “Fool Me Once,” “Stay Close,” and “The Stranger” find large audiences on Netflix. “I Will Find You” continues that formula while introducing a new setting, becoming the first adaptation from the author’s Netflix deal to take place entirely in the United States.



The cast also brings together actors from some of television and film’s biggest recent hits. Alongside Worthington are “Severance” star Britt Lower as former reporter Rachel Mills, Milo Ventimiglia as her longtime confidant Hayden, Erin Richards as David’s ex-wife Cheryl, Jonathan Tucker as his loyal friend Adam Mackenzie, and Chi McBride as veteran FBI agent Max Williams. Madeleine Stowe and Clancy Brown round out the ensemble.



Behind the scenes, the series was created by Robert Hull, who serves as showrunner and adapted the novel for television alongside Coben. Filming took place primarily in Ontario, Canada, including scenes shot at Kingston Penitentiary, before additional production moved to New York City. 



Another reason the title is generating conversation is Netflix’s release strategy. All eight episodes debuted simultaneously, allowing viewers to move through the story’s twists in a single sitting. With social media already filling up with reactions and discussions about the show’s biggest reveals, “I Will Find You” has quickly become one of the platform’s most talked about new releases.

Set inside an upscale retirement community, “The Boroughs” followed a group of elderly residents who uncover a supernatural force feeding on their remaining years. Led by characters played by Alfred Molina, Geena Davis, Alfre Woodard, Denis O’Hare, Clarke Peters and Bill Pullman, the series blended science fiction with themes of aging and mortality.



The eight episode drama opened with 5.6 million views during its first weekend on Netflix. It gained momentum in its first full week, climbing to 9.5 million views, but audience interest quickly cooled. By the following week, viewership had fallen to 3.7 million, suggesting the show was unlikely to generate sustained growth.



With “The Boroughs” now finished, the Duffer Brothers are turning their attention to an increasingly busy slate that includes continued work with Netflix and a newly forged partnership with Paramount Pictures, where they are developing an event film targeted for a 2028 release.

While Netflix has not revealed plot specifics, the proposed title is expected to draw from the central concept that powered the picture. The setup offers room for an episodic format, with new cases, disguises, and moral complications potentially driving the narrative from week to week.



The original film was directed by Richard Linklater, who also co-wrote the screenplay alongside Glen Powell. Powell took the lead role as Gary Johnson, a quiet college professor who assists law enforcement by impersonating a hitman. What begins as a police operation gradually becomes far more complicated when Gary develops feelings for a woman who seeks his services in an attempt to escape an abusive marriage.



“Hit Man” drew inspiration from the real-life story of Gary Johnson, a college professor who worked with Houston police during undercover sting operations in the late twentieth century. The factual basis came from a 2001 magazine article by journalist Skip Hollandsworth, though much of the movie’s romantic and criminal intrigue was fictionalized for the screen.



The picture assembled a cast that included Adria Arjona, Austin Amelio, Retta, and Sanjay Rao alongside Powell. Following its premiere at the 80th Venice International Film Festival in September 2023, the film continued its festival run before arriving in theaters in May 2024 and debuting on Netflix shortly afterward. The release earned widespread praise from critics and further elevated Powell’s profile as both an actor and screenwriter.
