According to Variety, the Focus Features release is projected to rise 16% in its second weekend, an uncommon feat for a wide release, especially in the horror genre. The film is expected to earn roughly $19.9 million for the weekend and about $24.8 million through the extended Memorial Day frame.

<h2>‘Obsession’ Continues Rare Box Office Climb in Week Two</h2>

Written, directed, and edited by Curry Barker, the supernatural horror picture opened last weekend with $17.2 million after initially tracking far lower before release. The latest estimates would push its domestic total to approximately $55.1 million after just over a week in theaters, placing it behind only “The Mandalorian and Grogu” during the holiday corridor.

The film stars Michael Johnston as Bear, a music store employee whose desperate wish for his longtime friend Nikki to fall in love with him spirals into psychological and supernatural violence. Inde Navarrette co stars as Nikki, whose increasingly obsessive behavior drives much of the movie’s escalating horror. Supporting cast members include Andy Richter, Cooper Tomlinson, and Megan Lawless.

Before its theatrical release, “Obsession” premiered in the Midnight Madness section at the Toronto International Film Festival, where it attracted attention from distributors and genre audiences. Focus Features ultimately secured worldwide rights in a deal reportedly valued between $14 million and $15 million, one of the largest acquisitions for a genre title in the festival’s history.

The film was produced on a reported budget of roughly $1 million, making its theatrical performance especially notable. Barker, who previously gained online attention for “Milk and Serial,” developed the feature after drawing inspiration from a classic monkey’s paw style premise involving wishes gone wrong. Jason Blum later joined the project as an executive producer under the Blumhouse Productions banner ahead of the movie’s festival rollout.

Horror titles often experience steep declines after opening weekend, particularly once word of mouth spreads beyond core genre fans. Instead, “Obsession” appears to be expanding its audience heading into the Memorial Day holiday, giving Focus Features one of its strongest commercial performers in recent years.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film earned an estimated $12 million from Thursday previews across North America, the lowest preview haul for a “Star Wars” title released under Disney’s ownership of Lucasfilm.

<h2>‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ Opens Below Previous Franchise Lows</h2>

Directed by Jon Favreau, the film expands the story first introduced in the Disney+ series “The Mandalorian” and marks the first theatrical “Star Wars” release since 2019. Pedro Pascal reprises his role as Din Djarin alongside Grogu, the breakout character widely known to audiences as Baby Yoda. The cast also includes Sigourney Weaver, Jeremy Allen White, and Martin Scorsese.

Despite the modest preview turnout, audience reception appears considerably stronger than some earlier franchise spinoffs. The picture quickly reached an 88% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes shortly after previews began. Early tracking estimates project a domestic four day opening in the range of $82 million to $90 million, though some exhibitors believe the film could still climb closer to $100 million over the holiday frame.

The comparisons to “Solo: A Star Wars Story” have already become unavoidable. Ron Howard’s 2018 anthology title previously held the weakest Disney era “Star Wars” preview figure with $14.1 million before ultimately debuting to $103 million across the four day Memorial Day weekend. That film later became the franchise’s first major theatrical disappointment after finishing with roughly $393 million worldwide against an enormous production budget.

Industry observers note that “The Mandalorian and Grogu” is tracking differently from past “Star Wars” releases. Pre release data suggests the movie is performing especially well with younger audiences and older moviegoers rather than relying primarily on hardcore franchise fans. Lucasfilm is also benefiting from the popularity of the original streaming series, which became one of Disney+’s defining launches during the pandemic era.

The picture continues the story of Din Djarin and Grogu as they work with the New Republic to pursue Imperial remnants while becoming entangled in a conflict involving Rotta the Hutt, criminal factions, and bounty hunters. Favreau co wrote the screenplay with Dave Filoni and Noah Kloor after Lucasfilm shifted plans away from a fourth season of the television show in favor of a theatrical feature.

Mixed critical reviews have praised Pascal’s performance and the musical score by Ludwig Göransson, while reactions to the story and action sequences have been more divided.

Christopher Nolan’s highly anticipated historical epic, The Odyssey, is rapidly approaching, and brand-new behind-the-scenes details have just dropped.

The veil of secrecy surrounding Christopher Nolan’s upcoming cinematic adaptation of The Odyssey is finally lifting. Thanks to a massive, revealing new feature published by ELLE, fans are getting an unprecedented look at the dynamic between the film’s star-studded, powerhouse ensemble.&nbsp;

With an official runtime now confirmed at a staggering 2 hours and 52 minutes, the picture promises to deliver the massive, sprawling scale audiences have come to expect from the visionary director.

Beyond the epic length, the cast and crew have shared some incredible, deeply entertaining anecdotes about the filming process. Here is a definitive breakdown of the most exciting behind-the-scenes revelations regarding Hollywood’s biggest upcoming blockbuster.

<h2>Chasing Perfection: Zendaya’s “Iconic” Performance</h2>

Stepping into the mythological world, Zendaya has clearly left an indelible mark on both the director and her A-list co-stars. Nolan revealed that he actively sought out the acclaimed actress specifically because of her signature, “iconic” grace, which was required for her divine role.

“I mean, she’s literally playing a goddess; it’s a tall order,” Nolan explained. “She’s a true movie star, but also an incredible actor.”

Her undeniable talent apparently earned her some incredibly rare, high praise from the notoriously stoic director—much to the hilarious dismay of her veteran co-stars. Matt Damon recounted a brilliantly funny story about watching Zendaya completely nail a difficult scene, triggering a wave of playful jealousy between himself and Tom Holland.

“There were takes where she did one thing, she did this amazing scene, and he said, ‘Cut.’ And then he went, ‘Perfect,’” Damon recalled. “And literally, Tom and I were obsessed with this. She got a ‘perfect’? I’ve never even gotten a ‘great.’ She got a ‘perfect’? He and I b*tched about it for the entire rest of the film. ‘Did you get anything today?’ ‘No, I got a “good”—moving on.’ ‘Yeah, me too.’”

<h2>A Shared Set, But No Shared Screen Time</h2>

While fans of Hollywood’s favorite couple were thrilled to learn that both Zendaya and Tom Holland had been cast in the epic project, Zendaya revealed in an interview with ELLE that the two actors actually share no scenes together in the final film.

Despite their completely separate shooting schedules and character arcs, Zendaya still made a point to visit the set to watch her partner work his magic on camera. Witnessing Holland tackle Nolan’s demanding material was an overwhelming experience for the actress. “I could have cried, I was so proud,” she shared.

The couple’s supportive dynamic was heavily felt across the entire production. Damon, who spent plenty of time with the duo during filming, was quick to praise their relationship. “I absolutely adore her and Tom together, and they deserve each other—they’re the two loveliest people,” he noted.

<h2>The One and Only Helen of Troy</h2>

When it came to casting the legendary “face that launched a thousand ships,” Nolan had only one name in mind. The director confirmed that Academy Award winner Lupita Nyong’o was always his definitive, first choice to portray Helen of Troy.

As the countdown officially begins, anticipation for this mythological adaptation is absolutely skyrocketing. Armed with a staggering $250 million budget, breathtaking IMAX 70mm cinematography, and an unbelievable A-list ensemble, Christopher Nolan is poised to deliver yet another monumental cinematic event.&nbsp;

The Odyssey will officially arrive in theaters and IMAX screens nationwide via Universal Pictures on July 17, 2026. Buckle up and get ready for a truly legendary journey.

Inside Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’: Epic Runtimes, On-Set Jealousy, and a “Perfect” Goddess

Inside Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’: Epic Runtimes, On-Set Jealousy, and a "Perfect" Goddess - Spoiler US

On May 21, 1999, audiences were first introduced to the charming, pastel-colored streets of West London through the brilliant, witty lens of screenwriter Richard Curtis and director Roger Michell.

Starring Hugh Grant as the endearingly floppy-haired William Thacker and Julia Roberts as the megastar Anna Scott, Notting Hill was an instant critical and commercial triumph. Taking the core DNA of previous British hits like Four Weddings and a Funeral and elevating it with massive Hollywood star power, the film completely dominated the global box office. But beyond its staggering financial success, the movie left an indelible mark on pop culture, cementing a brand-new romantic comedy formula and turning a quiet London district into a permanent fixture on the global tourist map.

<h2>Redefining the Romantic Comedy</h2>

Before Notting Hill, romantic comedies frequently relied on quirky misunderstandings or enemies-to-lovers tropes between everyday people. This film completely flipped the dynamic by introducing the ultimate fantasy of extreme celebrity colliding with mundane, everyday life. Richard Curtis brilliantly grounded the unbelievable premise by surrounding the central couple with a deeply relatable, eccentric, and hilarious group of fiercely loyal friends. It proved that a blockbuster rom-com could be incredibly sharp, emotionally intelligent, and genuinely funny without ever sacrificing its romantic core. This fresh, celebrity-meets-civilian blueprint has been endlessly replicated by Hollywood, yet rarely with the same effortless magic.

<h2>The Chemistry That Captivated the World</h2>

The absolute anchor of the film’s enduring legacy is the spectacular, lightning-in-a-bottle chemistry between the two leads. Hugh Grant perfected his signature bumbling, self-deprecating British charm, creating the ultimate cinematic everyman that audiences could easily root for. Conversely, Julia Roberts delivered a remarkably vulnerable, self-aware performance that cleverly mirrored her own intense, real-life struggles with suffocating fame and relentless tabloid scrutiny. Her iconic “I’m just a girl, standing in front of a boy” monologue remains one of the most quoted declarations of love in cinematic history because the raw, grounded delivery made audiences completely forget they were watching two of the highest-paid actors on the planet.

<h2>Transforming a London Neighborhood</h2>

When production originally began, the real-life neighborhood of Notting Hill was a vibrant, culturally diverse area, but it was certainly not the polished, highly affluent tourist epicenter it is today. By heavily showcasing the bustling Portobello Road Market, the colorful terraced houses, and the charming private gardens, the film acted as a brilliant, two-hour love letter to the district. Following the film’s massive 1999 release, property values skyrocketed, and the area underwent rapid gentrification. The unprecedented cinematic exposure completely reshaped the local economy, turning its quaint, winding streets into one of the most highly sought-after zip codes in the entire United Kingdom.

<h2>The Legacy of the Blue Door and the Bookshop</h2>

Even twenty-seven years later, fans from across the globe continuously flock to West London to recreate the film’s most iconic moments. The famous “blue door” belonging to William Thacker’s flat (which was originally owned by screenwriter Richard Curtis) became such a massive attraction that the subsequent owners eventually had to paint it black to deter obsessive fans, before later restoring its iconic color. Similarly, while the actual Travel Bookshop that inspired the film has since changed hands and names, the original filming location on Portobello Road still draws thousands of romantic pilgrims desperate to snap a photo exactly where the legendary cinematic romance first blossomed.

<h2>A Soundtrack for the Ages</h2>

A great romantic comedy is completely inseparable from its soundtrack, and this film delivered an absolute masterclass in musical curation. Elvis Costello’s soaring cover of “She” became the ultimate romantic anthem, perfectly capturing the sweeping, cinematic scale of Anna Scott’s overwhelming fame. Paired with Ronan Keating’s massive hit “When You Say Nothing at All” and Bill Withers’s soulful “Ain’t No Sunshine” accompanying Will’s visually stunning walk through the changing seasons of Portobello Road, the music elevated every single frame. The widely celebrated soundtrack remains an essential listen, instantly transporting fans straight back to the magical summer of 1999.

Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film “The Odyssey” is shaping up to be one of the director’s most expansive productions yet. According to AMC, the adaptation of Homer’s classic Greek epic will run 2 hours and 52 minutes, making it the second longest feature Nolan has directed to date, behind only 2023’s “Oppenheimer.”

The runtime also pushes the picture past “Interstellar” and “The Dark Knight Rises,” two of the filmmaker’s previous large scale epics.

<h2>Christopher Nolan’s Latest Epic Nears the Three Hour Mark</h2>

At 172 minutes, “The Odyssey” now sits just below “Oppenheimer,” which currently holds the record as Nolan’s longest movie at 180 minutes. “Interstellar” previously occupied the second spot with a runtime of 169 minutes, while “The Dark Knight Rises” came in at 164 minutes. The new figure suggests Nolan is once again embracing a sprawling narrative structure for a story that spans war, mythology, and a years long journey across dangerous seas.

The film stars Matt Damon as Odysseus, the king of Ithaca, with Anne Hathaway portraying Penelope. The ensemble also includes Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya, and Charlize Theron. Nolan wrote and directed the project, while he and producer Emma Thomas are backing the picture through their Syncopy banner.

Described as a mythic action fantasy, “The Odyssey” follows Odysseus after the Trojan War as he attempts to return home while encountering figures and creatures from Greek mythology, including Polyphemus, Circe, Calypso, and the Sirens. Nolan has reportedly approached the material with a more grounded interpretation, blending large scale practical filmmaking with mythological elements rooted in natural phenomena rather than overt fantasy spectacle.

The production itself has been massive in scope. Filming took place across multiple countries including Morocco, Greece, Italy, Iceland, Scotland, Malta, and the United States. The movie was also shot entirely on IMAX 70 mm film cameras, marking a first for a feature production.

Universal Pictures is scheduled to release “The Odyssey” in theaters and IMAX on July 17. Early ticket sales for select IMAX 70 mm screenings reportedly sold out quickly after becoming available a full year ahead of release.

According to Deadline, 20th Century Studios is developing a film based on the long running “Choose Your Own Adventure” series, with Radio Silence attached to direct and produce.

The filmmaking collective, made up of Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, Tyler Gillett, Justin Martinez and Chad Villella, has become one of the most recognizable names in studio horror thanks to projects such as “Ready or Not,” “Scream VI” and “Abigail.” Writer Tom Bissell, whose credits include “Andor” and “The Disaster Artist,” is reportedly handling the screenplay.

<h2>A Classic Interactive Series Heads to Hollywood</h2>

First launched in the 1970s, “Choose Your Own Adventure” became a publishing phenomenon by turning readers into active participants in the story. Written in the second person, the books allowed readers to make decisions for the protagonist, with each choice sending the narrative toward a different path or ending. The format helped separate the franchise from traditional children’s literature and turned repeat readings into part of the appeal.

The series exploded in popularity during the 1980s and 1990s under Bantam Books, eventually selling more than 250 million copies worldwide and reaching readers in dozens of languages. The books covered a wide range of genres including science fiction, mystery, fantasy and survival adventures, often encouraging readers to flip between pages as they navigated branching storylines.

No plot details have been revealed for the movie adaptation, leaving open the question of whether the project will attempt to replicate the interactive structure that defined the books. Hollywood has experimented with audience driven storytelling before, most notably with Netflix’s “Black Mirror: Bandersnatch,” which famously became the subject of a trademark dispute with Chooseco, the company that revived the “Choose Your Own Adventure” brand in the early 2000s.

The attachment of Radio Silence suggests the studio may be aiming for a genre leaning approach rather than a straightforward family adaptation. Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett have built a reputation for blending suspense, dark humor and crowd pleasing twists, qualities that could align naturally with a story built around multiple possible outcomes.

A day like today in 2011, Woody Allen debuted a charming, time-traveling romantic comedy that would quickly become the most commercially successful film of his entire career.

Midnight in Paris officially premiered at the Cannes Film Festival before enchanting audiences across the United States, offering a whimsical escape into the vibrant literary circles of the 1920s.

Starring Owen Wilson as a nostalgic Hollywood screenwriter desperately seeking inspiration, the narrative beautifully explored the universal human trap of romanticizing the past.

Celebrating its fifteenth anniversary, the beloved picture remains a masterful exploration of artistic ambition and Parisian magic. Here is a definitive look back at the elements that made this feature an absolute triumph.

<h2>A Record-Breaking Box Office Triumph</h2>

Despite arriving with a modest $17 million production budget, the whimsical fantasy absolutely dominated the global theatrical market in ways no one anticipated. Earning an astonishing $151.7 million worldwide, the feature proudly stands as the highest-grossing film ever directed by Woody Allen, completely shattering his previous commercial records.

Audiences flocked to independent and mainstream theaters alike, captivated by the breathtaking cinematography and infectious, escapist atmosphere. This unprecedented financial success proved that an intellectual, dialogue-heavy romantic comedy could still compete with massive summer blockbusters.

<h2>Taking Home Oscar Gold</h2>

Beyond its massive commercial appeal, the cinematic love letter earned widespread critical acclaim and dominated the 2012 awards season. The masterful, highly original screenplay navigated complex themes of nostalgia and creative dissatisfaction, ultimately securing the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay.

Alongside its prestigious Oscar victory, the film also captured the Golden Globe in the same category, cementing its status as a triumph of modern storytelling. It remains a heavily studied, brilliant example of how to perfectly balance high-concept fantasy mechanics with deeply grounded, relatable relationship drama.

<h2>Owen Wilson’s Charming Departure</h2>

Stepping away from his traditional frat-pack comedies, Owen Wilson delivered one of the most remarkably understated and vulnerable performances of his entire career. Portraying the deeply nostalgic screenwriter Gil Pender, he successfully channeled the director’s signature neurotic energy while maintaining his own undeniable, boyish charisma. Instead of relying on loud slapstick humor, his comedic timing here is quiet, observant, and frequently heartbreaking as he realizes the profound emptiness of his impending marriage. This phenomenal acting pivot beautifully anchored the surreal narrative, providing the audience with a perfectly relatable guide through time.

<h2>Resurrecting Literary Titans</h2>

One of the most thrilling aspects of the picture is its brilliant, wildly entertaining depiction of the legendary “Lost Generation” expatriates residing in 1920s France. Corey Stoll stole practically every scene with his hyper-masculine, aggressively passionate portrayal of Ernest Hemingway, while Adrien Brody delivered an unforgettable, hilariously eccentric cameo as Salvador Dalí.

Watching these towering historical figures casually interact with a bewildered modern writer provided a spectacular, deeply intellectual layer of comedy. The casting directors masterfully matched modern talent with historical icons, breathing vibrant, hilarious life into the pages of classic literature.

<h2>A Stellar Supporting Cast</h2>

Surrounding the protagonist was an absolutely staggering ensemble of international talent that elevated every single frame of the production. Rachel McAdams expertly played against type as the remarkably unsympathetic, materialistic fiancée, perfectly highlighting the fundamental incompatibility driving the narrative conflict.

Meanwhile, Marion Cotillard absolutely radiated melancholic beauty as the fictional muse Adriana, creating a captivating romantic foil who is tragically trapped in her own cycle of nostalgia. Adding incredible depth to the roster, Michael Sheen delivered a hilariously insufferable performance as a pseudo-intellectual named Paul, serving as the ultimate antagonist to the hero’s whimsical journey.

<h2>A Grammy-Winning Soundtrack</h2>

To perfectly capture the intoxicating, romanticized atmosphere of the French capital, the filmmakers curated a truly spectacular compilation of jazz and classical standards. The infectious, rhythmic sounds of the acoustic guitar heavily anchored the production, seamlessly transporting viewers back to the buzzing, smoke-filled salons of the roaring twenties. The immaculate musical supervision did not go unnoticed by the recording industry, ultimately taking home the Grammy Award for Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media. Fifteen years later, streaming the album remains the absolute fastest way to instantly recreate the film’s undeniable, deeply nostalgic magic.

Directed by Zach Cregger, the plot tracks a desperate courier who becomes trapped inside a remote hospital during the sudden onset of a viral outbreak, forcing him to fight through hordes of mutated monstrosities. Moving away from the high-flying action of past iterations, this adaptation focuses squarely on resource management, biological body horror, and intense, intimate suspense.

<h2>Terrifier 4</h2>

Art the Clown is set to unleash another wave of unrelenting chaos when the franchise’s highly anticipated fourth installment slashes into theaters on October 1. Written and directed by series creator Damien Leone, this chapter pivots away from the previous film’s Yuletide backdrop to plunge Lauren LaVera’s resilient Sienna Shaw into a chaotic New Year’s Eve nightmare. Production insiders hint that the narrative will dive deeper into the supernatural origins of its monochromatic tormentor while continuing to deliver the boundary-pushing, practical special effects that transformed the underground property into a global phenomenon.

<h2>Clayface</h2>

DC Studios is making its first official foray into absolute body horror on October 23 with a tragic villain origin story integrated into the new DC Universe’s “Gods and Monsters” chapter. Penned by genre auteur Mike Flanagan and directed by James Watkins, the narrative tracks an ambitious actor, played by Tom Rhys Harries, whose facial disfigurement drives him to accept an experimental clay-based treatment from a mysterious scientist, played by Naomi Ackie. Shot on location in Liverpool to capture a moody, gothic aesthetic, the cinematic piece adapts a fan-favorite classic comic arc into a deeply unsettling psychological nightmare.

<h2>Werwulf</h2>

Focus Features is anchoring its Christmas Day release slate on December 25 with a prestigious piece of period gothic horror crafted by visionary director Robert Eggers. Co-written alongside frequent collaborator Sjón, this atmospheric nightmare features an elite ensemble cast consisting of Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Lily-Rose Depp, Willem Dafoe, and Ralph Ineson. True to Eggers’ meticulous filmmaking style, the production promises historical accuracy, folklore-driven psychological terror, and a deeply haunting exploration of lycanthropy that stands completely apart from typical Hollywood monster films.

<h2>A Walk to Remember</h2>

Mandy Moore and Shane West shine brilliantly in this tear-jerking 2002 coming-of-age story that beautifully defined early-aughts teen cinema. A rebellious high schooler is forced into community service, unexpectedly falling deeply in love with the local reverend’s modest daughter who harbors a tragic, life-altering secret. The emotional narrative perfectly captures the transformative, healing power of unconditional first love against seemingly impossible odds. It remains a deeply nostalgic, profoundly moving classic that effortlessly transitions the author’s faith-based literature into a universally adored theatrical experience.

Scott Eastwood and Britt Robertson headline this ambitious 2015 feature that skillfully intertwines two completely different generational love stories. A modern relationship between a professional bull rider and an ambitious art student is continuously paralleled with the historic, resilient marriage of an elderly widower they rescue from a fiery car crash. The dual timelines offer a rich, expansive narrative scope that highlights how the necessary sacrifices for lasting love remain universally unchanged over time. This structural departure provides a deeply satisfying, multi-layered theatrical experience for dedicated romance enthusiasts.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, “King Conan” is targeting a 2027 production start, with Christopher McQuarrie attached to write and direct for 20th Century Studios.

The project will bring Schwarzenegger back to the sword and sorcery world that helped define his early career, this time with an older and battle worn version of the legendary warrior.

<h2>A Return That Took Decades to Happen</h2>

The road back to Conan has been unusually long, even by Hollywood franchise standards. Plans for a third film date back to the late 1980s, when a movie titled “Conan the Conqueror” was being developed before collapsing amid scheduling conflicts and expiring contracts. Elements of that abandoned script eventually evolved into “Kull the Conqueror,” leaving Schwarzenegger’s Conan story unfinished for nearly four decades.

A second revival effort emerged in 2012 under the title “The Legend of Conan,” envisioned as a direct continuation of the 1982 original while ignoring both “Conan the Destroyer” and the 2011 reboot starring Jason Momoa. Multiple writers took passes at the screenplay before the project quietly dissolved in 2017. Now, with McQuarrie involved after directing “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning,” the character appears closer than ever to returning to the screen.

Schwarzenegger framed the sequel as something he had been pushing for over the last decade. “Next year, we are going to do King Conan,” he said while speaking with TheArnoldFans. “So that is a reality now, and I am excited about it.” The star added that he had long envisioned the project as a continuation that stayed faithful to the world created by Robert E. Howard and the iconic artwork of Frank Frazetta, while also expressing interest in having original “Conan the Barbarian” director John Milius return in a producing role.

The new film appears to be leaning heavily into the passage of time. Schwarzenegger described a version of Conan who has ruled for decades and is now facing the consequences of age, power, and exhaustion. “He’s the king, and he gets a little bit complacent. He’s tired of the job, and he wants to move on,” the actor said.

That approach could give “King Conan” a very different identity from the muscle driven fantasy spectacles of the 1980s. The original “Conan the Barbarian,” directed by Milius from a screenplay developed with Oliver Stone, became a cult phenomenon despite mixed reviews at release. Shot largely in Spain and built around practical effects, oversized sets, and brutal combat sequences, the picture eventually grossed tens of millions worldwide and transformed Schwarzenegger into one of Hollywood’s defining action stars.

Four decades later, the sequel now has the opportunity to revisit that mythology through a far older, more reflective version of the character who once conquered it all.

After years of focusing heavily on streaming, “Star Wars” is finally heading back to cinemas with “The Mandalorian and Grogu,” though the first critical reactions suggest a comeback that is entertaining without being entirely convincing.

Jon Favreau’s latest entry has landed in mixed territory with a 68% score on Rotten Tomatoes from 88 critics ahead of its theatrical release on May 22.

<h2>A Familiar Galaxy Returns to the Big Screen</h2>

Set after the fall of the Galactic Empire, the picture follows Din Djarin and Grogu as the New Republic recruits them for a mission involving Rotta the Hutt, voiced by Jeremy Allen White.

The project marks Lucasfilm’s first theatrical “Star Wars” feature since “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” and continues the story launched in the Disney+ series “The Mandalorian,” with Pedro Pascal returning as Din Djarin.

For some critics, the transition from streaming to theaters never fully escapes the feeling of expanded television. Writing for Variety, Owen Gleiberman described the title as “fun in a slightly flat way,” arguing that Disney is ultimately delivering “a couple of likable, diverting, semi forgettable episodes jammed together” despite the larger scale and blockbuster action.

That sense of creative hesitation also appeared in The Hollywood Reporter’s review. Frank Scheck questioned whether the picture works as “a worthy theatrical Star Wars movie” or simply “a condensed fourth season of the series,” concluding that it lands somewhere in between. While praising the upgraded visuals, IMAX presentation and Pascal’s performance, he noted that the story still feels “stubbornly small” for a franchise once defined by sweeping mythology and cinematic ambition.

Deadline’s Damon Wise took a broader view of the franchise’s current direction. Although he called the production “pretty entertaining when it’s at its simplest,” he also raised doubts about how long nostalgia alone can sustain audience enthusiasm. Wise suggested longtime fans may be growing restless with stories stuck between the original trilogy and the prequels, especially as younger viewers become less attached to legacy characters and familiar iconography.

Even with the divided reception, most reviews acknowledged that the film succeeds at delivering the elements audiences already associate with the series: fast moving action, recognizable mythology and Grogu’s undeniable appeal. For Lucasfilm, that may be enough to reestablish “Star Wars” as a theatrical event. Whether it represents a bold new era for the franchise, however, remains a much more contested question among critics.

We explore how the massive release of ‘Shrek’ shattered traditional fairy tale conventions, created an undeniable pop-culture phenomenon, and permanently changed how the world views animated filmmaking.

When Shrek originally premiered a quarter of a century ago, the animation industry was largely defined by earnest, musically driven princess narratives that rarely strayed from a predictable formula. By introducing a cynical, mud-bathing antihero and a barrage of adult-oriented pop-culture references, DreamWorks Animation took a massive creative risk that spectacularly paid off.

<h2>Shattering the Fairy Tale Formula</h2>

Before this iconic green ogre stormed into theaters, major animated features strictly adhered to earnest, squeaky-clean princess narratives. This groundbreaking movie completely flipped the script by actively mocking those beloved tropes with sharp, cynical humor tailored just as much for adults as children.&nbsp;

From Lord Farquaad’s hilarious vanity to Fiona’s surprising martial arts skills, the screenplay refused to take classic folklore seriously. It successfully proved that modern families were desperately hungry for an edgier, highly self-aware approach to storytelling.

<h2>Building the DreamWorks Empire</h2>

While Pixar had already established a massive foothold in computer-generated imagery, this monumental swamp adventure officially crowned a formidable new industry rival. The massive financial triumph of the 2001 blockbuster single-handedly solidified DreamWorks Animation as a powerhouse studio capable of dominating the global box office. Earning nearly half a billion dollars worldwide, the project validated Jeffrey Katzenberg’s vision of creating edgy, culturally relevant entertainment. It ultimately laid the critical foundation for future billion-dollar franchises like Madagascar and Kung Fu Panda.

<h2>Creating a Pop-Culture Soundtrack</h2>

Instead of relying on sweeping orchestral numbers sung by woodland creatures, the filmmakers made the brilliant decision to license contemporary rock and pop hits. This bold choice transformed Smash Mouth’s “All Star” from a late-nineties radio staple into an immortal, multi-generational cinematic anthem. By seamlessly blending classic medieval aesthetics with modern rock tracks like Joan Jett’s “Bad Reputation,” the soundtrack resonated deeply with teenage and adult demographics. It completely revolutionized how major Hollywood studios approach musical supervision in family-friendly blockbusters.

<h2>Making Oscar History</h2>

The undeniable cultural and critical impact of this fractured fairy tale literally forced the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to adapt. In 2002, the Oscars officially introduced the Best Animated Feature category to properly honor full-length digital and hand-drawn storytelling.&nbsp;

Defeating heavy-hitting competitors like Pixar’s beloved Monsters, Inc., this subversive comedy proudly took home the inaugural golden statuette. Securing that historic victory permanently legitimized comedic, pop-culture-heavy animation as a highly respected, award-worthy cinematic art form.

The Scary Movie franchise is officially crawling back into the spotlight, reviving one of the most recognizable parody brands of the early 2000s, when horror cinema was booming with slashers, found footage experiments and supernatural hits that practically invited satire.

With a new installment coming in 2026, the question is less about the return itself and more about the targets waiting to be skewered. Modern horror has evolved into a more self-aware landscape, dominated by films like M3GAN and the resurgence of legacy sequels such as Scream (2022).

<h2>Which Horror Hits Are About to Get Roasted in Scary Movie’s Return?</h2>

After more than a decade away, the Scary Movie franchise is officially staging a comeback, with a new installment slated for release in 2026 and the original creative force behind the Wayans brothers returning to shape its direction.

The rebooted sequel was developed at Paramount and Miramax, marking the first time in years that the series has attempted to re-enter a horror landscape that has dramatically evolved since its early-2000s peak.

What makes this return particularly intriguing is not just the revival itself, but the sheer volume of contemporary horror films now in its crosshairs. The movie will arrive in theaters on June 5 and will parody:

<ul><li>Sinners</li><li>Weapons</li><li>The Substance</li><li>Longlegs</li><li>Get Out</li><li>Smile</li><li>Terrifier</li><li>Ma</li><li>Scream</li><li>M3GAN</li><li>Wednesday</li><li>A Quiet Place</li><li>Nope</li><li>Heretic</li><li>I Know What You Did Last Summer</li></ul>

This new wave of horror provides a radically different target list compared to the original Scary Movie, shifting from late-90s slasher culture into a digital-age ecosystem where horror trends spread fast, mutate quickly, and often blur the line between seriousness and satire.

The result is a setup that feels almost tailor-made for parody. Modern horror has become self-referential, emotionally stylized, and increasingly fragmented across subgenres — from prestige psychological horror to TikTok-fueled monster concepts.

That gives Scary Movie a broader, sharper canvas than ever before, where anything from viral killers to existential dread films can be turned inside out. As anticipation builds, the biggest mystery isn’t the return of the franchise itself, but which cultural fear it will choose to laugh at first.

Originally released in 2004 and based on Gail Carson Levine’s novel, Ella Enchanted became a distinctive entry in early-2000s fantasy cinema, with Anne Hathaway starring as a young woman cursed with uncontrollable obedience in a whimsical kingdom mixing romance, satire and fairy-tale tropes.

Now, the property is reportedly being revisited for television at Disney+, with a new series in development and Hathaway attached as executive producer, signaling a potential return to the story that helped define one of her early breakout roles.

<h2>Ella Enchanted Returns as Disney+ Develops New Series</h2>

More than two decades after its theatrical release, Ella Enchanted is reportedly returning in a new form, with Disney+ developing a television adaptation of Gail Carson Levine’s fantasy novel.

The original 2004 film, directed by Tommy O’Haver and starring Anne Hathaway as Ella, reimagined the classic fairy-tale framework through a comedic and musical lens, telling the story of a young woman cursed with obedience who struggles to reclaim autonomy in a kingdom filled with magic, political intrigue and satirical twists.

While the film underperformed at the box office at the time, it gradually built a strong cult following, especially among viewers drawn to its unconventional tone and early-2000s fantasy aesthetic.

The new project marks a notable return to that world, this time for television. According to early reports, the series is in development for Disney+, with Anne Hathaway attached as an executive producer.

Her involvement connects the revival directly to the original adaptation, which has long been associated with her early breakout years in Hollywood. The move also places Ella Enchanted within a broader industry trend of revisiting nostalgic fantasy properties and reshaping them for serialized streaming formats, where longer narratives allow for expanded world-building and character exploration.

While details about plot, casting, or creative direction remain undisclosed, the premise opens the door to a deeper reinterpretation of the source material — one that could revisit Ella’s world with a more modern tone, potentially expanding beyond the romantic fairy-tale structure of the original film.

In that sense, the project arrives not simply as a remake, but as a reactivation of a story that has lingered in pop culture memory for years, now being repositioned for a new streaming-era audience.
