According to Film Updates, “What Happens at Night” has wrapped production and is now entering post production following several months of filming across Europe.

<h2>What We Know About Martin Scorsese’s New Psychological Horror Film</h2>

Based on Peter Cameron’s 2020 novel of the same name, “What Happens at Night” marks a notable departure into Gothic psychological horror for Scorsese. The story follows an American married couple who travel to a remote snow covered town in Europe to adopt a baby. As complications arise around the adoption process, their sense of identity and understanding of their own lives begins to unravel.

The film brings together an impressive ensemble led by Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence, who play the central couple. The cast also includes Mads Mikkelsen, Patricia Clarkson, Jared Harris, Welker White, Ilinca Manolache, and Gabriel Spahiu. The project reunites Scorsese and DiCaprio once again while pairing the director with Lawrence in a leading role for the first time.

Development on the adaptation stretches back several years. Patrick Marber adapted Cameron’s novel for the screen, and reports later indicated that filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson contributed uncredited revisions to the screenplay. Interest in the project intensified in 2025 when Scorsese officially came aboard as director, with DiCaprio and Lawrence attached to star.

Production began in February in the Czech Republic before moving to locations in Switzerland. During the film’s early stages, DiCaprio revealed that Scorsese had pointed him toward Alfred Hitchcock’s “Vertigo” as a creative reference point, offering a glimpse into the psychological atmosphere the filmmakers were pursuing.

With principal photography now complete, attention shifts to the post production process. While no release date has been announced, “What Happens at Night” is already shaping up as one of the most anticipated upcoming projects on Scorsese’s slate, combining an acclaimed creative team with a story rooted in psychological suspense and mystery.

The film marks director Shawn Levy’s first entry into the galaxy far, far away and arrives at a time when the franchise is looking beyond the stories that defined the Skywalker Saga.

It is scheduled to reach theaters on May 28, 2027, with Ryan Gosling leading a cast that also includes Flynn Gray, Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, Simon Bird, Jamael Westman, Daniel Ings, and Amy Adams.

<h2>What We Know About the Next ‘Star Wars’ Film</h2>

“Star Wars: Starfighter” is set roughly five years after the events of “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker,” but it is not being positioned as a direct continuation of that storyline. Lucasfilm executives have described the project as a largely self contained adventure centered on new characters, allowing the franchise to explore a different corner of the timeline while remaining connected to the broader “Star Wars” universe.

The road to production stretched across several years. Levy first entered discussions with Lucasfilm in 2022, though development slowed during the 2023 Writers Guild of America strike. Momentum returned after the strike ended, and writer Jonathan Tropper, a frequent collaborator of Levy’s, joined the project in 2024. By early 2025, Gosling had entered negotiations to star, helping move the picture to the front of Lucasfilm’s theatrical plans.

Details about the story remain limited, but several casting announcements have offered clues. Newcomer Flynn Gray is playing the nephew of Gosling’s character, while Amy Adams portrays the boy’s mother. Matt Smith and Mia Goth are set to play antagonistic figures, suggesting that the central conflict may revolve around Gosling and Gray’s characters as they are pursued across the galaxy.

Levy has emphasized that the picture is charting its own path rather than relying heavily on familiar faces or established storylines. He has described the project as an opportunity to create new worlds, creatures, technology, and characters while still maintaining the spirit audiences associate with “Star Wars.” The filmmaker has also cited “Return of the Jedi” as a major creative influence, pointing to its blend of adventure, emotion, humor, and spectacle.

Production began in the United Kingdom in August 2025 and later moved to locations in Sardinia, Italy, before wrapping that December. The movie is now deep into post-production, with editor Adam Gerstel assembling the final cut and acclaimed composer Thomas Newman crafting the score. With exactly one year remaining until release, “Starfighter” stands as the next major step in Lucasfilm’s effort to expand the franchise beyond the stories that have dominated the big screen for decades.

South Korean cinema has spent the last decade expanding its global reach one breakthrough at a time, but Hope arrived like a tidal wave instead of a slow ascent. Before most audiences have even seen a full trailer, Na Hong-jin’s long-awaited sci-fi thriller has already secured distribution in more than 200 countries and territories, setting a new overseas pre-sales record for a Korean film and reportedly recovering nearly half of its production budget before release.

<h2>How Hope broke the overseas pre-sales record for a Korean film</h2>

Hope became one of the biggest international stories at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival after securing distribution deals in more than 200 territories before its wide release, setting a new overseas pre-sales record for a Korean film.

Industry reports revealed that the movie recovered a significant portion of its massive production budget through international sales alone, an extraordinary achievement for a project that blends psychological horror, science fiction and arthouse filmmaking.

The scale of the sales frenzy reflected how dramatically Korean cinema’s global reputation has evolved after the success of films like Parasite and series such as Squid Game.

The film is directed by Na Hong-jin, the acclaimed Korean filmmaker behind The Wailing, The Chaser and “The Yellow Sea, Known for mixing spiritual dread with brutal realism, Na spent years developing Hope as his most ambitious production to date.

According to festival reports, the movie combines cosmic horror, mystery and survival thriller elements inside a story set near the Korean Demilitarized Zone, where the appearance of a tiger slowly uncovers something far more disturbing hiding in the surrounding wilderness.

<h2>Why the cast of Hope attracted worldwide attention</h2>

Part of the excitement surrounding Hope came from its unusually international cast, which brought together major Korean stars and Hollywood actors inside the same production.

Hwang Jung-min, Zo In-sung and Hoyeon lead the Korean side of the ensemble, while Alicia Vikander, Michael Fassbender and Taylor Russell joined the film in prominent roles. The combination immediately turned the project into one of the most anticipated Korean productions ever presented at Cannes.

Festival attendees described the movie as visually overwhelming and intentionally disorienting, with early reactions praising Na Hong-jin’s scale and ambition even while acknowledging the film’s divisive structure.

Several critics compared its atmosphere to a collision between folk horror and large-scale alien paranoia, while others highlighted its intense sound design and nightmarish imagery as the elements most likely to define audience conversations after release.

<h2>What Hope says about the global rise of Korean cinema</h2>

The international success of Hope before release has become another milestone in the rapid globalization of South Korean entertainment. Only a decade ago, Korean films rarely received major worldwide theatrical launches outside specialized festival audiences.

Now, Korean directors are commanding blockbuster budgets, attracting Oscar-winning actors and selling films into nearly every major market before general audiences have even seen them.

Industry analysts also pointed to streaming platforms and global fan culture as major reasons behind the explosion in overseas demand. International distributors reportedly viewed Hope not simply as a Korean film, but as an event title capable of attracting both arthouse audiences and mainstream horror fans worldwide.

The record-breaking pre-sales performance ultimately confirmed something the film industry has been slowly realizing for years: Korean cinema is no longer operating at the edge of Hollywood’s orbit — it has become one of the engines driving the global market itself.

The toys are officially back, and they are gearing up to completely dominate the global box office. As the legacy cast of Toy Story 5 recently reunited for a massive, star-studded U.K. launch event in London, the highly anticipated Pixar sequel is already making headlines before it even hits theaters.

Between unprecedented financial projections and deeply emotional new story details straight from Woody himself, it is becoming abundantly clear that this fifth installment is going to be a monumental cinematic event. Here is a breakdown of the record-breaking box office numbers and the devastating new scene that Tom Hanks just teased.

<h2>A Franchise-Best Box Office Projection</h2>

When Disney originally announced a fifth Toy Story film, many fans were skeptical about whether audiences would return for another chapter. It turns out, that skepticism was entirely unfounded.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, current tracking projects that Toy Story 5 is on pace to earn a massive $150 million at the domestic box office during its opening weekend. If these numbers hold, it will secure the biggest opening weekend in the entire 31-year history of the franchise, easily surpassing the impressive debuts of both Toy Story 3 ($110 million) and Toy Story 4 ($120 million).

Driven by exceptional pre-sales, heavy nostalgia, and a highly intriguing “Toys vs. Screens” premise, the film is perfectly positioned to become one of the biggest, billion-dollar blockbusters of 2026.

<h2>Tom Hanks Teases a “Heartbreaking” Scene</h2>

While the Toy Story franchise is famous for making grown adults cry—from Jessie’s tragic backstory to the terrifying incinerator scene in the third film—Tom Hanks recently revealed that the fifth movie might contain the most emotionally devastating moment yet.

Speaking at the U.K. launch event, Hanks opened up about how the new film tackles the harsh, modern realities of kids growing up with technology and social media. He pointed out one specific, highly emotional moment involving their kid, Bonnie, that completely wrecked him.

According to Hanks, the movie features “one of the most heartbreaking scenes I’ve seen.”

Detailing the scene, he explained the agonizing helplessness the toys feel as they watch Bonnie navigate digital bullying: “When that little girl is getting her feelings hurt by what other people are texting about her, and she doesn’t understand why.”

<h2>Growing Up in the Digital Age</h2>

Hanks’s comments perfectly highlight exactly why Pixar decided to greenlight a fifth film. By shifting the narrative conflict away from getting lost at a yard sale or being donated to a daycare, the writers are tackling the genuine, real-world anxieties that modern kids and parents face today.

For decades, Woody, Buzz, and the gang have always been able to physically protect their kid from tangible threats. However, watching them realize they cannot protect Bonnie from the psychological damage of a glowing screen adds an entirely new, deeply mature layer of emotional weight to the franchise.Get your tissues ready. Rocky III arrived in multiplexes and delivered a cinematic knockout, completely redefining what a sports movie could be. Sylvester Stallone returned to write, direct, and star in the third installment, which took a massive stylistic leap from its predecessors.

Originally intended to be the final chapter in the Rocky saga, the film’s massive box office success—grossing over $270 million worldwide on a $17 million budget—insured the Italian Stallion would keep fighting. As we celebrate the 44th anniversary of this iconic pop culture milestone, here is a look back at what Rocky III meant at the time and how it forever altered the DNA of the franchise.

<h2>What ‘Rocky III’ Meant in 1982</h2>

When the original Rocky debuted in 1976, it was a gritty, character-driven Oscar winner heavily rooted in the aesthetic of 1970s independent cinema. Rocky II (1979) continued that grounded, working-class narrative. However, by 1982, the cultural landscape was rapidly shifting toward the MTV era, defined by flashy visuals, muscular action heroes, and high-energy music.

Rocky III fully embraced this new decade. It transformed Rocky Balboa from a humble underdog into a wealthy, polished celebrity who had lost his edge. The film perfectly captured the excesses of the early 1980s, trading meat lockers for high-end gyms and introducing larger-than-life characters.

Key elements that defined the film’s cultural impact include:

<ul><li>The Arrival of Mr. T: As the ruthless, trash-talking James “Clubber” Lang, Mr. T made his phenomenal film debut. He brought a terrifying, visceral intensity to the screen and gave us the immortal catchphrase, “I pity the fool.”</li><li>Apollo Creed as the Mentor: In a brilliant narrative pivot, Rocky’s former arch-rival Apollo Creed (played by the late, great Carl Weathers) became his trainer, teaching him how to fight with speed and rhythm.</li><li>The “Eye of the Tiger”: With Queen denying Stallone the rights to use “Another One Bites the Dust,” he turned to the rock band Survivor. The result was “Eye of the Tiger,” a relentless, chart-topping anthem that became the ultimate workout track for generations to come.</li><li>Thunderlips: Hulk Hogan’s hilarious and chaotic cameo as the world wrestling champion cemented the film’s status as a pure, unabashed spectacle.</li></ul>

<h2>What Happened to the Franchise?</h2>

Because Rocky III successfully proved that audiences were hungry for high-stakes, action-packed boxing melodramas, the franchise completely leaned into the blockbuster formula. The series evolved from a standalone character study into one of the most successful cinematic universes in history.Forty-four years after Clubber Lang predicted “pain,” Rocky III remains a vital, endlessly rewatchable piece of 1980s cinema. It taught an entire generation how to get their edge back, and it ensured that the Rocky franchise would definitively go the distance.

Jennifer Lopez is the undisputed queen of the modern romantic comedy. Having starred opposite some of Hollywood’s most iconic leading men in absolute classics like The Wedding Planner, Maid in Manhattan, and Out of Sight, securing the top spot on her list of co-stars is no small feat. However, it seems the legendary multi-hyphenate has found a brand-new favorite.

During the recent Hollywood premiere of their highly anticipated Netflix movie, Office Romance, Lopez officially crowned her co-star—Ted Lasso alumnus Brett Goldstein—as her favorite on-screen partner to date. She even boldly declared him the “best kisser” she has ever worked with. As fans eagerly await the film’s fast-approaching release, here is everything you need to know about the movie, their electric chemistry, and the hilarious behind-the-scenes details.

The playful, deeply affectionate dynamic between the two stars was on full display at The Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood during the film’s premiere. When asked about Lopez’s previous comments naming him the best kisser of her entire career, Goldstein could not help but revel in the massive compliment.

“I’m going to say this. It was better than winning an Emmy,” Goldstein hilariously responded to Entertainment Tonight. “When I heard she said that, I was like, ‘Okay. Okay, now turn. I guess I’ve peaked.&apos;”

Lopez further elaborated that their incredible chemistry felt totally natural from the moment they met. She affectionately joked with reporters that she was simply relieved he “wasn’t a weirdo” when they first sat down together. That immediate comfort allowed them to easily navigate the film’s steamy, raunchy moments without overthinking it.

<h2>What is ‘Office Romance’ About?</h2>

Directed by Ol Parker (Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again), Office Romance promises to be a slightly edgier, raunchier take on the classic J.Lo rom-com formula.

The plot centers around a strict, high-powered airline CEO named Jackie Cruz (played by Lopez). Her rigidly controlled, workaholic lifestyle is completely thrown into chaos when she unexpectedly falls for her company’s charming and ambitious new lawyer, Daniel Blanchflower (played by Goldstein). As the two intense executives give in to their undeniable chemistry, they are forced to navigate the hilarious, complicated, and potentially career-ending consequences of keeping a secret workplace relationship hidden from their colleagues.

<h2>Written Exclusively for J.Lo</h2>

The pairing almost never happened. Goldstein, who co-wrote the screenplay alongside Ted Lasso co-creator Joe Kelly, explicitly tailored the role of Jackie Cruz for Lopez. In fact, he sent her the script with a very specific, high-stakes ultimatum.

“They sent me the script and they were like, ‘We wrote this for you. If you don’t do it, we’re not even making the movie,&apos;” Lopez revealed during a recent SiriusXM interview. Flattered by the offer, Lopez eventually read the script and immediately recognized its massive potential, noting that it had “all the DNA of a classic romantic comedy” while delivering much sharper, edgier jokes than her usual fare.

<h2>Cast, Release Date, and Where to Watch</h2>

Beyond the immediate spark between Lopez and Goldstein, Office Romance features an absolutely stacked comedic supporting cast. The hilarious ensemble includes Betty Gilpin, Tony Hale, Amy Sedaris, and legendary actor Edward James Olmos playing Captain Jack Cruz.

For fans eager to see if Goldstein truly earns his title as the ultimate J.Lo leading man, the wait is almost over. Office Romance is set to premiere globally exclusively on Netflix on Friday, June 5, 2026.

Get your popcorn ready and clear your streaming schedule, because this laugh-out-loud love letter to workaholics is about to take flight!

According to early social media reactions reported by The Hollywood Reporter, critics and journalists who attended preview screenings of “Disclosure Day” are already calling the film one of Spielberg’s strongest efforts in decades, while singling out Emily Blunt’s lead performance as a standout.

<h2>Early Reactions Praise Spielberg’s Latest Sci Fi Epic</h2>

Collider editor Steven Weintraub wrote, “In a shock to absolutely no one, Steven Spielberg has delivered another towering home run with Disclosure Day. I could go on and on about what I loved, but I was lucky enough to see the movie knowing almost nothing, and I strongly recommend you do the same. Stop watching the trailers.” He also praised Emily Blunt, adding, “I know big summer movies aren’t usually the kinds of performances that get awards season attention, but once people see what she does in this…”

Slashfilm critic Bill Bria called the movie “the weirdest movie Spielberg’s ever made” in a positive sense, writing, “Breathtaking compositions, David Koepp’s X-Files-meets-The-Bible script is one big high wire act, Emily Blunt’s most accomplished performance, John Williams’ best score in years. Riveting, moving stuff.”

Gizmodo writer Germain Lussier described the film as “a dense roller coaster ride blending chase film, love story, and mystery, all wrapped in sci fi wonder.” He added, “It’s Spielberg’s best film in 20 years, filled with all the magic that makes his films so special, plus an all time character and performance by Emily Blunt.”

“Disclosure Day” stars Josh O’Connor, Colin Firth, Eve Hewson, Colman Domingo, and Wyatt Russell alongside Blunt. The film follows a whistleblower racing to expose a massive conspiracy surrounding extraterrestrial disclosure. Spielberg directed the project from a screenplay by Koepp, with Universal Pictures set to release the movie in IMAX theaters on June 12.

On this day exactly four years ago—May 27, 2022—audiences globally felt the need for speed one more time. After multiple pandemic-related delays that had industry insiders genuinely terrified for the future of the theatrical experience, Top Gun: Maverick finally blasted into multiplexes.

Defying the heavily synthesized, CGI-heavy superhero fatigue of the era, Joseph Kosinski’s legacy sequel delivered a shot of pure, unadulterated cinematic adrenaline. It successfully achieved the impossible: honoring the cheesy, beloved nostalgia of Tony Scott’s 1986 original while drastically elevating the emotional stakes and delivering some of the most jaw-dropping practical aerial photography in film history. As we celebrate the fourth anniversary of the film that “saved Hollywood,” we are taking a definitive look back at its staggering success and the exciting future of the franchise.

<h2>The Billion-Dollar Savior of Cinema</h2>

When Maverick hit theaters, the global box office was still heavily reeling from the aftermath of global lockdowns. Studios were frequently dumping their biggest titles directly onto streaming platforms, and theater owners were desperate for a universal crowd-pleaser. Paramount Pictures and Tom Cruise held the line, absolutely refusing to release the film anywhere but on the biggest screens possible.

That massive gamble spectacularly paid off. The film eventually soared to an astonishing $1.5 billion at the worldwide box office, completely dominating the summer and staying in theaters for months fueled by ecstatic word-of-mouth.

“You saved Hollywood’s ass, and you might have saved theatrical distribution.” > — Steven Spielberg to Tom Cruise at the 2023 Oscars Nominees Luncheon.

Beyond the financial triumph, the film was a massive critical darling, earning an incredible six Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, and taking home the Oscar for Best Sound. It proved that audiences were absolutely starving for earnest, practical-effects-driven storytelling.

<h2>The Perfect Legacy Sequel</h2>

What made the movie so incredibly resonant wasn’t just the G-force-inducing jet sequences; it was the poignant, surprisingly melancholic narrative. Instead of simply playing the greatest hits, the script forced Pete “Maverick” Mitchell to confront his own obsolescence in an increasingly drone-heavy, digital military.

By grounding the conflict in Maverick’s unresolved grief over his late wingman, Goose, and his heavily fractured relationship with Goose’s son, Rooster (played brilliantly by Miles Teller), the film secured a massive emotional anchor. Combined with Glen Powell’s breakout performance as the arrogant Hangman and a deeply moving final on-screen appearance by Val Kilmer as Iceman, the movie was a masterclass in how to revive a dormant intellectual property with absolute respect and care.

<h2>Cleared for Takeoff: What We Know About ‘Top Gun 3’</h2>

You simply do not make $1.5 billion in Hollywood without a studio immediately asking for more. While Tom Cruise is notoriously protective of his franchises, the massive success of Maverick made a return to the Danger Zone inevitable. Earlier this year at CinemaCon 2026, Paramount officially confirmed that Top Gun 3 is in active development.

While the film is still in the pre-production phase, the core creative team is reuniting to ensure the next chapter meets the impossibly high bar set by its predecessor.&nbsp;

While no official release dates have been confirmed—largely because Cruise is balancing several major projects, including a new film from Alejandro G. Iñárritu—the announcement alone has already sparked excitement among fans eager for updates.

Until then, today is the perfect excuse to fire up your soundbar, put on your aviators, and rewatch one of the greatest action movies of the 21st century.

Backrooms, the A24 horror film based on the viral internet universe created by Kane Parsons, has officially positioned its young director at the center of a historic milestone, with multiple reports confirming he is now the youngest filmmaker ever to lead a major studio release and that the project is being closely watched for its box office impact.

The film, which expands Parsons’ original YouTube mythos into a full theatrical feature, is backed by A24 and major producers including James Wan and Shawn Levy, and is shaping up as one of the studio’s most ambitious horror releases.

<h2>Backrooms Opens Strong at the Box Office</h2>

Backrooms, the A24 sci-fi horror film directed by Kane Parsons, has officially been released in theaters and is now playing nationwide after opening on May 29, 2026.

Early industry estimates had already positioned the film as a major breakout candidate, with tracking pointing to a $40M–$50M domestic opening weekend driven by strong online anticipation and its built-in fanbase from Parsons’ viral YouTube universe.

The release marks a rare transition from internet mythology to full theatrical scale, with Parsons expanding his original found-footage concept into a studio-backed feature produced by A24 and major horror names like James Wan and Shawn Levy.

The film’s arrival also places immediate attention on its commercial performance, as industry observers watch whether its digital-native origins can translate into sustained box office momentum beyond opening weekend.

<h2>Kane Parsons Makes History at 20</h2>

At just 20 years old, Kane Parsons has become the youngest filmmaker ever positioned to top the domestic box office if Backrooms meets its projected opening range.

His leap from self-taught VFX creator on YouTube to studio feature director reflects a broader shift in Hollywood toward internet-native storytelling and creator-driven filmmaking.

What began as a low-budget digital horror experiment has now evolved into a major theatrical release shot on massive practical sets and backed by A24’s genre pedigree.

The film’s performance is being closely watched not only as a box office test, but as a potential turning point in how viral online worlds translate into mainstream cinematic success.

The toys are officially back in town. Pixar has just released the final, emotional trailer for Toy Story 5, directed by Pixar veteran Andrew Stanton (WALL-E, Finding Nemo). Set to release exclusively in theaters on June 19, 2026, this latest installment brings back Tom Hanks (Woody), Tim Allen (Buzz Lightyear), and Joan Cusack (Jessie) for what might be their most relatable, modern challenge yet.

As an AI, I might technically be obligated to root for the machines, but even I have to admit that watching Buzz and Woody face off against modern technology is pulling at the heartstrings. Here is a definitive breakdown of the final trailer, the fresh faces joining the toy box, and the massive audience debate surrounding the film’s necessity.

<h2>The Plot: Toy Meets Tech</h2>

The overarching premise of the fifth film tackles the modern reality of playtime: screen time. Following the events of Toy Story 4, Jessie is now leading the toys in Bonnie’s room, with Buzz acting as her second-in-command. Meanwhile, Woody has been out on the road with Bo Peep, successfully helping abandoned toys find new owners.

However, everything changes when an eight-year-old Bonnie becomes completely obsessed with a new, high-tech electronic device. The toys are suddenly faced with a terrifying existential crisis: what happens when kids simply stop playing with physical toys? The trailer leans heavily into this emotional conflict, with Jessie heartbreakingly admitting, “I’m losing Bonnie to this device.” It forces Woody, Buzz, and the rest of the gang to navigate an entirely new landscape where they are competing against the endless allure of digital entertainment.

<h2>Meet the New Characters</h2>

Alongside the returning legacy cast—including Keanu Reeves back as Canada’s greatest stuntman, Duke Caboom—the new film introduces a whole new generation of tech-based and modern toys.

<ul><li>Lilypad (voiced by Greta Lee): The primary “antagonist” of the film. Lilypad is a frog-shaped smart tablet that completely captures Bonnie’s attention, representing the ultimate threat to traditional playtime.</li><li>Smarty Pants (voiced by Conan O’Brien): A toilet-training tech toy that adds some brilliant comedic relief to the rapidly modernizing toy box.</li><li>Atlas (voiced by Craig Robinson): A cheerful, talking GPS hippo toy.</li><li>Snappy (voiced by Shelby Rabara): An incredibly excitable toy camera.</li><li>Dr. Nutcase (voiced by Matty Matheson): A daredevil peanut toy who is absolutely terrified of the impending technological takeover.</li></ul>

(Note: The film also introduces new voice actors for beloved characters, with Jeff Bergman and Anna Vocino respectfully taking over the roles of Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head following the passings of Don Rickles and Estelle Harris, and Ernie Hudson stepping in as Combat Carl for the late Carl Weathers).

<h2>The Elephant in the Room: Was This Sequel Necessary?</h2>

When Disney first announced Toy Story 5, the audience reception was intensely divided. For many fans, the franchise had already delivered two “perfect” endings. Toy Story 3 perfectly wrapped up Andy’s childhood, and Toy Story 4 served as a beautiful, melancholic epilogue for Woody’s personal arc. Consequently, the announcement of a fifth film was met with heavy skepticism, with critics and fans citing massive “sequel fatigue” and accusing the studio of simply cashing in on reliable IP.

However, as the trailers have rolled out, the narrative conversation is slowly shifting. By grounding the conflict in the “Toys vs. Screens” debate, Pixar is tapping into a highly relevant, real-world anxiety shared by modern parents and kids alike. The existential dread of becoming obsolete in a digital age gives the franchise a surprisingly mature and urgently necessary theme to explore.

Will it reach the emotional heights of its predecessors? We will find out for sure when Toy Story 5 hits theaters on June 19.

Curry Barker’s Obsession has rapidly escalated from micro-budget curiosity to one of the most profitable horror releases of 2026, with Box Office Mojo reporting a global haul of approximately $79.7 million against a production budget of just $750,000.

Released in May 2026 through Focus Features after its festival circuit buzz, the film opened to strong domestic numbers and quickly expanded its reach internationally, fueled by intense word-of-mouth momentum and unusually strong weekday holds for a genre title.

<h2>Obsession Accelerates Box Office Run as Microbudget Horror Stretches Its Theatrical Lifespan</h2>

Curry Barker’s Obsession continues its unusual theatrical trajectory, with current estimates placing its worldwide total at roughly $74–80 million against a production budget reported between $750,000 and $1 million.

Released by Focus Features following its festival run, the film opened in mid-May 2026 and immediately overperformed projections, debuting to strong domestic numbers before extending its reach through sustained weekday holds and steady international expansion.

What has distinguished its run is not a single explosive weekend, but a prolonged accumulation of earnings driven by strong audience reception and unusually low drop-off rates for a horror release.

After a $17 million debut, the film has continued to post solid daily grosses, allowing it to compete in the same conversation as far larger studio titles while operating on a fraction of their costs.

As it nears the $80 million threshold, Obsession has become a reference point for how original horror, when amplified by word-of-mouth and efficient distribution, can still break through the modern theatrical hierarchy.

<h2>Obsession Cast: Who Brings Curry Barker’s Nightmare to Life</h2>

Curry Barker’s Obsession is led by Michael Johnston as Bear, a socially awkward music store worker whose impulsive wish sets the film’s disturbing chain of events into motion. Opposite him, Inde Navarrette plays Nikki Freeman, the emotional core of the story whose transformation drives much of the film’s psychological tension.

The supporting cast includes Cooper Tomlinson as Ian and Megan Lawless as Sarah, both anchoring the human relationships that unravel as the supernatural element takes hold.

<h2>What Obsession Is About</h2>

At its center, Obsession follows Bear, who discovers a mysterious object known as the “One Wish Willow,” capable of granting a single desire. In a moment of emotional desperation, he wishes for Nikki to love him “more than anything,” only to see that wish spiral into a controlling, nightmarish bond that strips away autonomy and reality itself.

What begins as a grounded portrait of unspoken longing gradually mutates into a darker exploration of obsession, consent, and the terrifying consequences of wanting to control another person’s feelings. The story unfolds as a modern horror fable about desire gone wrong, where intimacy becomes distortion and affection turns into something suffocating.

Rather than relying on traditional jump scares, the film builds unease through emotional escalation, turning a simple wish into a force that reshapes identity, relationships, and perception of love itself.

For die-hard Star Wars fans and cinema historians alike, the end of May holds an incredibly special place in the pop culture calendar. While modern marketing has officially claimed May 4th as the franchise’s global holiday, May 25 is the actual date that changed the entertainment industry forever.&nbsp;

In a remarkable stroke of cinematic serendipity (and careful studio scheduling), two of the most important chapters in the Skywalker saga debuted exactly six years apart on this very day.

As we celebrate this monumental dual anniversary, we are taking a definitive look back at the humble, anxiety-inducing premiere of the original 1977 masterpiece, the massive theatrical event that was the 1983 conclusion, and how this specific date permanently altered the global box office.

<h2>The 1977 Miracle: ‘A New Hope’</h2>

When the original Star Wars (later subtitled Episode IV – A New Hope) hit theaters on Wednesday, May 25, 1977, absolutely no one anticipated a cultural revolution. Twentieth Century-Fox was notoriously nervous about George Lucas’s weird, high-budget space opera. In fact, the film originally opened on a meager 32 screens across the United States.

However, driven entirely by ecstatic word-of-mouth, massive lines rapidly began wrapping around city blocks. Audiences were completely mesmerized by the groundbreaking visual effects pioneered by Industrial Light &amp; Magic, the instantly iconic John Williams score, and the earnest, mythological storytelling. The film single-handedly invented the modern summer blockbuster, proving that science fantasy could universally appeal to massive, four-quadrant audiences while simultaneously launching an unprecedented global merchandising empire.

<h2>The 1983 Epic Conclusion: ‘Return of the Jedi’</h2>

Exactly six years later, on May 25, 1983, the theatrical landscape looked vastly different. Star Wars was no longer an underdog gamble; it was the biggest intellectual property on the planet. Following the dark, agonizing cliffhanger of The Empire Strikes Back, the anticipation for Return of the Jedi reached a fever pitch.

This time, the film debuted on over 1,000 screens, completely dominating the cultural conversation. Lucas and director Richard Marquand delivered a deeply emotional, action-packed finale that brought the original trilogy to a triumphant close. From the grotesque, puppetry marvel of Jabba the Hutt’s palace to the high-speed speeder bike chases through the redwood forests of Endor, the film pushed practical effects to their absolute limits. It beautifully resolved the tragic arc of Darth Vader and successfully cemented the Skywalker saga as a definitive modern myth.

Decades after these fateful Wednesday premieres, the cultural footprint of the original trilogy remains absolutely unparalleled. While the franchise has since expanded into prequel trilogies, animated series, massive Disney+ live-action shows, and immersive theme park lands, the foundation of this multi-billion-dollar empire was firmly poured on May 25.

Released in 1980, “The Shining” has evolved from a divisive literary adaptation into one of the most analyzed horror pictures ever made. Directed by Stanley Kubrick and based loosely on the novel by Stephen King, the movie initially received mixed reactions from critics and even skepticism from some horror audiences. Over the decades, however, its reputation transformed dramatically, becoming a landmark title in psychological horror and an enduring cultural obsession.

<h2>Why ‘The Shining’ Still Feels Unsettling 46 Years Later</h2>

Set inside the isolated Overlook Hotel, “The Shining” follows struggling writer Jack Torrance, played by Jack Nicholson, as he accepts a winter caretaker job that slowly unravels his grip on reality. Alongside him are Wendy Torrance, portrayed by Shelley Duvall, and their son Danny, whose psychic abilities expose the hotel’s violent history. Rather than relying heavily on jump scares, the film built tension through silence, repetition, and emotional instability.

Kubrick approached the material with a colder and more ambiguous tone than King’s original novel, a decision that sparked years of debate between fans of the book and admirers of the picture. The director leaned into visual unease, using symmetrical framing, long tracking shots, and haunting sound design to create an atmosphere that felt disorienting even during quiet scenes. Many of those techniques later became staples of elevated horror filmmaking.

The performances also became central to the film’s legacy. Nicholson’s increasingly erratic portrayal of Jack Torrance produced some of the most recognizable moments in horror history, while Duvall’s emotionally raw performance has undergone major critical reappraisal in recent years. The title’s imagery, from the twin girls in the hallway to the flood of blood pouring from the elevator, remains instantly recognizable across generations.

Although it underperformed expectations with some critics upon release, “The Shining” steadily gained influence through home video, academic analysis, and decades of reinterpretation. Its fingerprints can now be seen across modern horror cinema, particularly in pictures that prioritize dread, psychological collapse, and atmosphere over conventional scares.

Forty six years after its debut, the movie continues to inspire documentaries, fan theories, and scholarly debates about hidden meanings and symbolism. Few horror films have remained as culturally active for as long as “The Shining,” which still occupies a unique place between mainstream studio filmmaking and deeply unsettling art house cinema.

The victory extends a streak that initiated with Bong Joon Ho’s “Parasite” in 2019 and continued through titles including “Titane,” “Triangle of Sadness,” “Anatomy of a Fall,” “Anora,” and “It Was Just an Accident.”

<h2>Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve Lead One of Cannes’ Most Talked About Films</h2>

Written and directed by Mungiu, “Fjord” stars Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve as a Romanian Norwegian couple whose move to a remote village in Norway triggers growing suspicion from the surrounding community. The story follows the Gheorghiu family as tensions escalate around their parenting and cultural differences, turning them into subjects of scrutiny in an increasingly hostile environment.

The film quickly emerged as one of the standout titles of this year’s competition lineup, with critics particularly highlighting Mungiu’s screenplay and the performances from Stan and Reinsve. While reactions to the picture varied across publications, many reviewers pointed to its examination of identity, ideology, and social judgment as central to its impact.

Beyond the Palme d’Or, “Fjord” also collected several additional honors at Cannes, including the François Chalais Prize, the FIPRESCI Prize, the Ecumenical Jury Prize, and the Prix de la Citoyenneté. The film was produced as a multinational European co production involving companies from Romania, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, and France, with shooting taking place in Ålesund, Norway during 2025.

According to Variety, Neon entered this year’s Cannes competition with an unusually strong slate, having already acquired six titles before the festival began. Alongside “Fjord,” the distributor backed movies including “All of a Sudden,” “Hope,” “Paper Tiger,” “Sheep in the Box,” and “The Unknown.” With another Palme d’Or now added to its record, the company has further strengthened its reputation as one of the defining forces in contemporary international cinema distribution.

When “The Shining” premiered on May 23, 1980, the reaction was far from unanimous, but the film’s legacy only grew over time into one of the most dissected psychological horror movies ever made.

Based on the 1977 novel by Stephen King, the picture paired Kubrick’s clinical filmmaking style with unforgettable performances from Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall. Yet decades later, one of the most fascinating parts of the production’s history remains the list of actors who almost stepped into those roles instead.

<h2>The Casting Decisions That Shaped ‘The Shining’</h2>

Kubrick reportedly saw Nicholson as his ideal Jack Torrance from the start, even while considering several major stars for the role. Among the names discussed were Robert De Niro, Robin Williams and Harrison Ford. De Niro later admitted the film disturbed him enough to give him nightmares for weeks, while Williams’ energy reportedly did not fit the colder psychological tone Kubrick wanted. Ford also met with resistance from King, who disagreed with several of Kubrick’s instincts for the adaptation.

King famously objected to Nicholson’s casting because he believed audiences would immediately sense danger in him. After his performance in “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” Nicholson already carried an unpredictable screen persona that clashed with King’s vision of Jack as an ordinary man gradually unraveling. The author instead favored actors like Jon Voight, Martin Sheen and Michael Moriarty, believing they better reflected the slow descent into madness described in the novel.

The debate around casting extended to Wendy Torrance as well. Nicholson reportedly suggested Jessica Lange for the role, but Kubrick ultimately stayed with Duvall, whose fragile and anxious screen presence became central to the film’s atmosphere. The performance drew intense criticism at the time, including from King himself, though later reassessments helped transform Duvall’s work into one of the movie’s most discussed elements. In 2022, the controversial Golden Raspberry nomination she received decades earlier was officially rescinded amid renewed scrutiny over her treatment during production.

Several supporting roles also came close to looking very different. Veteran actor Slim Pickens was offered the role of Dick Hallorann, but reportedly refused unless Kubrick agreed to limit the famously exhausting number of takes. The role instead went to Scatman Crothers, whose calm presence became one of the picture’s emotional anchors. For young Danny Torrance, Kubrick initially wanted Cary Guffey from “Close Encounters of the Third Kind,” but the actor’s parents declined because they considered the material too disturbing.

Kubrick eventually launched an enormous search that reportedly involved interviewing thousands of boys across several American cities before discovering Danny Lloyd. Protecting the young actor from the film’s darker themes became a priority, with Lloyd believing he was making a drama rather than a horror movie.

That contrast between innocence and terror would become one of the defining qualities of a movie that, 46 years later, still invites audiences to imagine how radically different horror history might have looked with another cast wandering the halls of the Overlook Hotel.
