After nearly 10 years since the release of the film adaptation of “The Maze Runner“, it has been confirmed that the iconic sci-fi and drama saga will return to the big screen as a reboot of the original trilogy.
The movies were successful at the box office, especially among young audiences, and their popularity led to the production of sequels and generated a dedicated fan following for the franchise, which was led by Dylan O’Brien.
Based on James Dashner‘s story, The Hollywood Reporter informed that 20th Century Studios is developing a new installment, which could be scripted by Jack Paglen, known for his work on “Transcendence”.
Could Dylan O’Brien appear in the reboot?
Despite Dylan O’Brien being one of the main faces of The Maze Runner, it is unlikely that we will see the actor return to his role as Thomas. Although the actor has not confirmed his presence, a good cameo is never ruled out.
Many fans believe that the star may not participate in the new installment due to having had a challenging experience on the set of the last movie (Maze Runner: The Death Cure), not due to his colleagues, but due to an accident.
While filming one of the scenes for the final part of the saga, he suffered a serious fall and spent time in the hospital. He used to perform his own stunts and one of them went wrong, resulting in several fractures.
Although he managed to recover, at the time he suffered a concussion, facial fractures and other injuries after falling from a moving vehicle. This forced production to stop while he healed, which involved surgery and rehabilitation.
Who is in the production of the reboot?
It appears that Disney‘s production company is in negotiations with Jack Paglen to be responsible for writing the script of the new movie, which will tell a different story that is neither a sequel nor a new version.
THR also confirmed that the producers who worked on the original saga will be returning, along with Wes Ball, who will this time serve as an additional producer and not the director, as we have seen previously.
Ellen Goldsmith-Vein and Lee Stollman from Gotham Group, and Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen from Temple Hill, will be taking the lead and overseeing the production. It is still unknown who has been chosen to direct.
What will be different about the reboot?
Well, according to what some sources told the entertainment media, the next movie won’t be a new version of the story or a sequel. Instead, the hope is to create a kind of continuation, but returning to the original elements.
This happened with the recent “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” adaptation, as it’s like a reboot of the original saga but without remaking the previous films; rather, it acknowledges them throughout and connects some of the events.
