His wife, portrayed by Isabella Adjani, requests a divorce, setting off a destructive chain of events involving infidelity, neglect, and ultimately, supernatural horror.

The film explores the psychological trauma of a disintegrating relationship, blending it with disturbing elements like a tentacled alien creature and doppelgangers. Zulawski wrote the movie as a meditation on his own failing marriage, giving the film a deeply personal and intense tone.
