After several years of absence, The Matrix not only returned during 2022, but it was confirmed that the fifth installment of the iconic franchise is in development with several significant changes that could change everything.
The Wachowski sisters, who were responsible for directing the previous movies, will no longer be in charge of the project. This time, it will be Drew Goddard who takes on the role, while also being responsible for writing the script.
Warner Bros. Discovery is the production company in charge of the science fiction drama, which starred Keanu Reeves and other big stars of the industry, such as Laurence Fishburne and Carrie-Anne Moss.
Will Keanu Reeves return for The Matrix 5?
Well, it hasn’t been confirmed yet whether Keanu Reeves will be present in the fifth Matrix film as Neo. However, it is estimated that the actor will return to portray his iconic character, as it wouldn’t be the same without him.
The drama is in an early stage of development, so it’s not clear which actors from the saga will return. Among those rumored to potentially come back are Carrie-Anne Moss, Laurence Fishburne, Hugo Weaving and Jada Pinkett Smith.
The Matrix 5 was Drew Goddard’s idea
The project arose from a personal initiative of director Goddard, who contacted Warner and took charge of presenting the project. The company was fascinated with the proposal, and it was Jesse Ehrman, president of production, who spoke about it:
“Drew came to Warner Bros with a new idea that we all believe would be an incredible way to continue the world of The Matrix, honoring what Lana and Lilly started over 25 years ago and offering a unique perspective based on his own love for the series and the characters“.
When the filmmaker and screenwriter was asked about how the original idea for the next installment of the franchise came about, he pointed out: “It’s not hyperbole to say that the Matrix movies changed cinema and my life. Lana and Lilly’s exquisite art inspire me daily, and I am more than grateful for the opportunity to tell stories in their worl”.
Lana Wachowski will participate as a producer
Lana Wachowski, one of the sisters who make up the well-known director duo, confirmed that she will be in The Matrix 5 as a producer. In the case of her sister Lily, it is still a mystery if she will be part of it.
It is likely that she won’t be present in the project, as in the last installment titled The Matrix Resurrections, she didn’t want to return because “going back was very unappealing”. Lana was the one who directed her in 2021.
