The flickering gaslight over John Constantine’s long-delayed return has been a source of anxious speculation for years. Fans who have kept a faithful vigil for a sequel to the 2005 cult-favorite film have weathered silence and rumors, wondering if the project had been condemned to the abyss of Hollywood.

A recent word from Keanu Reeves, the actor forever tied to the Hellblazer’s Americanized incarnation, suggests that the eternal wait might be nearing its end, or at least its next pivotal crossroads. The script, which has been the subject of rewrites and deliberation, has apparently reached a new state.

He expressed cautious optimism, stating, “Fingers crossed. Another draft of the script came in. We’re gonna take it to the studio and hopefully they like it too“, according to Rotten Tomatoes and Culture Crave.

This development marks a significant step forward for the project, which has been in the works for several years. The sequel to Constantine is set to reunite key members of the original creative team.

Director Francis Lawrence, known for his work on The Hunger Games franchise, is set to return to helm the new movie. Producer Akiva Goldsman is writing the script. Reeves’ involvement further solidifies the continuity and commitment to delivering a compelling follow-up.

The path to Constantine 2 has been influenced by shifts within DC Studios. The director noted that the project’s progress was initially hindered by “regime changes” at Warner Bros. and DC Studios. However, with the current leadership’s support, the creative team has received approval to proceed with the script, bringing the sequel closer to realization.
