Ryan Murphy is taking American Horror Story Season 13 in a direction that goes beyond a simple return to Coven. After months of speculation that the next chapter would focus exclusively on the witches of Miss Robichaux’s Academy, the creator revealed that the upcoming season will instead serve as a massive celebration of the anthology’s entire history, bringing together elements from different corners of the franchise.

What Did Ryan Murphy Reveal About American Horror Story Season 13?

Ryan Murphy revealed that American Horror Story Season 13 will not be only a continuation of Coven, but instead a massive crossover that brings together elements from multiple seasons of the anthology series.

The creator clarified that the upcoming chapter will expand beyond the world of the witches, describing it as a celebration of the entire American Horror Story universe rather than a single-season revival…

Well everybody thinks it’s a ‘Coven’ season and it’s not. It’s all the seasons. So Sarah Paulson is playing six or seven roles, Jessica Lange is playing all four of her iconic characters, Evan Peters is playing five characters… it is like the Avengers. They all come together to defeat the ultimate evil, so it’s very fun and as soon as I pitched it to them— many of them had said ‘no’ over the years— they were like, ‘well, okay, I’ve gotta come back for that’. But I pitched Jessica Lange and she was like, ‘oh shit, now I gotta do it’. It’s all of them in one season and it’s 13 episodes because it’s called ‘13’. I spent many, many months and many years writing it. I wanted to do 13 in a special way. It’s cool, it’s fun“.

For months, fans speculated that Season 13 would essentially become a third chapter connected to Coven and Apocalypse, especially after Murphy teased the return of several iconic actors and shared images linked to the witch storyline.

However, his latest comments changed the expectations surrounding the project, suggesting that the season will bring together characters, themes and mythology from across the franchise’s history.

The concept follows a path that American Horror Story has explored before, particularly with Season 8’s Apocalypse, which combined the worlds of Murder House and Coven. That crossover reunited characters from different eras of the anthology and proved that Murphy’s universe could move beyond its traditional standalone-season format.

Season 13 appears to take that idea even further by treating the entire franchise as one interconnected mythology. Murphy’s announcement also helped explain why the returning cast list generated so much attention.
