Having directed more than 90 films and series, David Fincher has worked hard to establish his name as one of the most important figures in contemporary cinema. Thus, it’s not surprising to see “Gone Girl” as the No. 3 movie on Apple TV+ in the United States, despite being released a decade ago.

This picture consistently ranks among the top 5 titles of Fincher in every list compiled about his filmography. It was lauded by critics for its exploration of marriage and gender dynamics, themes of identity and perception, complex characters and moral ambiguity, and its psychological thriller appeal.

“Gone Girl” also emerged as a commercial success at the box office, grossing $369 million worldwide against a $61 million budget, making it Fincher’s highest-grossing venture.

On the morning of their fifth wedding anniversary, Nick Dunne discovers that his wife, Amy Dunne, has gone missing from their home in North Carthage, Missouri. The police, led by Detective Rhonda Boney, find signs of a struggle and launch an investigation, quickly making Nick the prime suspect due to his odd behavior and the discovery of Amy’s incriminating diary.

The couple is portrayed by Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike in one of her best roles to date. The rest of the cast includes notable performances by Neil Patrick Harris, Tyler Perry, Carrie Coon, and Kim Dickens.

Pike’s performance was so brilliant that most of the nominations to major cinema awards that “Gone Girl” received were because of her. The Academy Award for Best Actress, the BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role, and the Critics’ Choice Movie Award for Best Actress were just some of them.
