If there’s anything better than a road movie, it’s a road movie directed by Ethan Coen. “Drive-Away Dolls” has just landed on Prime Video and has already become one of the most-watched films on the platform in the United States, according to FlixPatrol.

The idea for the picture has been on Coen’s mind since the 2000s when he and his wife pitched it to their friend, Allison Anders, during a Christmas vacation in San Francisco. In the span of two decades, the project underwent an extensive production process, but the core idea always remained unchanged: to create a lesbian road trip movie. And now, it’s finally here for you to enjoy.

While the title has received mixed reviews, the lead performances and its comedic touch have been widely praised. The humor navigates through familiar buddy tropes while also delivering fresh, original jokes.

‘Drive-Away Dolls’ makes it to the United States Top 10 on Netflix

While we never expected to see the Coen brothers branch out into solo projects, it happened, and Ethan Coen has made an impressive debut with his first solo directorial effort. This is evident in the high viewership “Drive-Away Dolls” is currently enjoying, propelling the movie into the United States Top 10 on Prime Video.

With ease, the film has surpassed popular titles like “21 Jump Street” and “Interstellar”—two of the streamer’s top hits in its catalog of iconic movies. It’s now in a neck-and-neck competition with James Wan’s “Night Swim” as it continues to climb the charts.

Set at the close of 1999, the flick follows Jamie and Marian, two friends in desperate need of a break and a fresh start. Seeking some relaxation, they embark on a spontaneous road trip to Tallahassee, but their journey takes an unexpected turn when they open the trunk of the car they specifically rented for the ocassion.

The cast is nothing short of star-studded. Margaret Qualley and Geraldine Viswanathan lead the duo, supported by A-list stars like Colman Domingo, Pedro Pascal, Matt Damon, and even Miley Cyrus, all appearing in supporting roles or cameos. Their performances are delightfully bizarre, ensuring plenty of laughs.

And if you’re left wanting more after watching, you’ll be pleased to know that a continuation is already in the works! The second installment, titled “Honey Don’t!,” is currently in post-production and will see Margaret Qualley returning, this time alongside Chris Evans and Aubrey Plaza.
