MacFarlane co-wrote the script with his frequent collaborators Alec Sulkin and Wellesley Wild, who are the team behind the hit comedy “Ted” (2012). He also stars in the movie, which has a star-studded ensemble cast that includes names such as Charlize Theron, Amanda Seyfried, Neil Patrick Harris and Liam Neeson.

Filmed in New Mexico, including Albuquerque and Santa Fe, the movie centers around a timid frontiersman who finds his courage with the help of a woman gunslinger, leading to a showdown with her outlaw husband.

The movie is currently triumphing on streaming, and it was also a box-office success at the time of its release. The film grossed $43.1 million in North America and $43.3 million internationally, totaling $86.4 million worldwide against a $40 million budget.

Despite its financial success, A Million Ways to Die in the West received mixed to negative reviews. Rotten Tomatoes reported a 33% rating based on 212 reviews, with an average score of 4.90/10.

The consensus was that the film, while offering a few laughs and showcasing a talented cast, suffered from being overlong and aimless. Audience reception was somewhat better, with CinemaScore giving it an average grade of “B.”
