Tentatively referred to as Kildare, the spinoff is being spearheaded by original series creators Josh Pate, Jonas Pate, and Shannon Burke. Set two decades before John B and the Pogues embarked on their first treasure hunt, the series will jump back 20 years to explore the roots of the island’s legendary, fierce social divide.
Uncovering the Origins of Pogues vs. Kooks
While the flagship series introduced audiences to the bitter rivalry between the working-class locals in “The Cut” (Pogues) and the wealthy seasonal residents of “Figure Eight” (Kooks), the prequel will dive headfirst into how that generational rift first erupted.
According to creator Josh Pate, the new show aims to answer the core mystery behind Kildare’s fractured society:
“It really is the story of how the island split — and it’s particularly relevant in our country right now — how it split into the haves and have-nots, how the Kooks and the Pogues started,” Pate explained to Deadline. “How did this rift start?”
Co-creator Shannon Burke added that the story will unfold through the eyes of the parents’ generation, featuring younger versions of familiar legacy characters alongside fresh faces navigating the island 20 years prior.
Expanding the OBX Universe
Though the project has been kicking around as a concept among the creators for a couple of years, it has officially picked up major steam at Netflix. The writing team is currently hard at work on the scripts alongside executives at the streaming giant.
The news comes at a pivotal moment for the franchise, serving as a welcome reassurance for fans looking for a way to stay anchored in the world of Outer Banks. By focusing on the backstory, legacy family secrets, and the rise of Kildare’s class war, Netflix is preparing to hand the torch to a whole new chapter of high-stakes coastal drama.
