For those who love “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” the topic of “the sequel” is often considered a Roman Empire itself. While there is a second film, “I Still Know What You Did Last Summer,” and even a third installment, “I‘ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer,” many are eagerly awaiting a continuation that does justice to the original.
A decade ago, it seemed like this might happen. In 2014, it was reported that director Mike Flanagan and writer Jeff Howard were working on a reboot of the iconic picture. However, the project eventually fell through, and a TV series reboot was released instead (which many fans prefer not to talk about).
But in February 2023, it was finally announced that a legacy sequel is in the works, aiming to meet the high expectations of its dedicated fanbase. Just when it seemed like the project might slip into development hell again, producers announced the cast!
All about the cast of the ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ legacy sequel
First, the most significant update, confirmed some time ago, is that Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. will reprise their roles as Julie James and Ray Bronson. This production aims to follow the same formula as the “Scream” franchise, blending returning stars with new ones who will be at the center of the story.

For the new members, The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Madelyn Cline and Camila Mendes will lead the group being pursued by a relentless stalker who knows their past secrets. This casting isn’t surprising, given that they are prominent figures of their generation, representing “Outer Banks” and “Riverdale.”

Joining them are Sarah Pidgeon and Jonah Hauer-King, known for “Tiny Beautiful Things” and “The Little Mermaid,” respectively. Plus, Matty Healy’s to-be wife Gabbriette is also joining. It’s intriguing to see such diverse stars come together, so it will be interesting to see how their chemistry unfolds.
The film will be directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, who previously helmed “Do Revenge” with Camila Mendes and Maya Hawke. Sony has set the release date for July 18, 2025. While horror fans are often skeptical about sequels to iconic titles, this fresh ensemble might just surprise them!
