Cate Blanchett’s upcoming dark comedy “Rumours” premiered yesterday at Cannes, receiving a four-minute standing ovation from the audience. According to Variety, laughter filled the late-night screening.
It revolves around a group of world leaders from the G7—the economic and political summit involving Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States—who become lost in the woods while attempting to draft a joint statement.
Alicia Vikander and Cate Blanchett lead the film, supported by a talented ensemble including Charles Dance, Roy Dupuis, Denis Ménochet, Nikki Amuka-Bird, Rolando Ravello, Takehiro Hira, and Zlatko Burić. Here, check out what is known about the movie’s theatrical release date.
When will ‘Rumours’ be released?
Considering that most films premiering at Cannes this year are setting release dates between August and September, it is quite probable that “Rumours” will follow the same schedule.
It’s certain that the premiere won’t happen in 2025. To be eligible for the Oscars, Cate Blanchett’s film needs to have a theatrical release before the year ends, as per the Academy’s rules.
After losing the Oscar for Best Actress to Michelle Yeoh in 2023, this could be Blanchett’s opportunity to take home the award for the third time. She previously won for “Blue Jasmine” in 2014 and “The Aviator” in 2005.
At the premiere, the actress herself stated that “Rumours” is not trying to be an important film with a message. This might particularly interest The Academy, which has been giving considerable attention to satires in recent years.
Critics have been praising the film for its dark humor and Blanchett’s performance. Guy Lodge of Variety reviewed it as “a wildly entertaining shaggy-dog satire that sees a stuffy G7 summit devolve into a murky, muddy, and strangely isolated zombie apocalypse.”
