On Tom Cruise’s 64th Birthday: The Movie He Still Calls the Best of His Career

Tom Cruise has delivered some of the biggest box office hits in modern cinema, from "Top Gun" to the "Mission: Impossible" franchise. Yet when asked to name the film he considers the finest of his career, his answer has never been one of his most commercially successful blockbusters.

According to IMDb trivia, Cruise has repeatedly singled out “Vanilla Sky” as the best movie he has ever made.

‘Vanilla Sky’ Remains Tom Cruise’s Personal Favorite

Released in 2001, “Vanilla Sky” marked Cruise’s second collaboration with director Cameron Crowe following the success of “Jerry Maguire.” The psychological science fiction thriller stars Cruise as wealthy publishing executive David Aames, whose seemingly perfect life spirals into a surreal mystery after a devastating car accident leaves him physically and emotionally scarred. The film also features Penélope Cruz, Cameron Diaz, Kurt Russell, Jason Lee, and Noah Taylor.

Cruise still considers “Vanilla Sky” the best picture of his career. The choice is particularly notable given the actor’s extensive filmography, which includes blockbuster franchises, Academy Award-nominated performances, and some of Hollywood’s highest-grossing action movies. Instead, he has consistently pointed to Crowe’s ambitious psychological drama as the project that stands above the rest.

Although “Vanilla Sky” received mixed reviews upon its release, it proved to be a commercial success, grossing more than $203 million worldwide against a reported $68 million budget. Over the years, the film has also undergone a significant critical reappraisal, developing a devoted cult following thanks to its blend of romance, mystery, science fiction, and psychological suspense. Cameron Diaz also earned Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Award nominations for her performance.

Today, “Vanilla Sky” remains one of the most debated entries in Cruise’s career, with its dreamlike narrative and open-ended conclusion continuing to spark discussion among audiences. Whether viewers see it as a psychological thriller, a science fiction mystery, or a romantic drama, it is the picture Cruise himself has chosen as the defining achievement of his decades-long career.
