Inside Cameron Diaz and Drew Barrymore’s Unshakeable 30-Year Friendship

Hollywood is famous for fleeting professional alliances, but as Cameron Diaz celebrates her 54th birthday, her three-decade sisterhood with Drew Barrymore stands as one of show business's most enduring relationships.

From meeting as teenagers in a local juice bar to co-starring in blockbusters and supporting each other through major life milestones, their bond has proven entirely immune to industry competition.

Born in a Coffee Shop: The Origins of Their Bond

Long before they shared a movie set, a 14-year-old Drew Barrymore met a 16-year-old aspiring model Cameron Diaz at a Los Angeles coffee shop and juice bar where Diaz worked. Barrymore, already a veteran actor, felt an instant kinship with the grounded, upbeat teenager.

Years later, when Barrymore was producing the 2000 feature adaptation of Charlie’s Angels through her Flower Films banner, Diaz was her absolute first choice for Natalie Cook. Their dynamic on set solidified a lifelong partnership, with Barrymore affectionately dubbing Diaz “DPO” (Drew’s Protection Officer) for her fiercely protective nature, while Diaz calls Barrymore “Pooh Bear.”

Supporting Each Other Through Every Chapter

Throughout their respective decades in the spotlight, the duo’s friendship has expanded far beyond red carpets:

  • Life Milestones: Diaz served as a bridesmaid in Barrymore’s weddings, and Barrymore was a key guest when Diaz married Good Charlotte guitarist Benji Madden in 2015.
  • Motherhood & Growth: As both actors transitioned into parenthood and expanded their business empires—Barrymore with her daytime talk show and Flower Beauty line, Diaz with her organic wine company Avaline—they have frequently credited each other with providing emotional grounding.
  • Unfiltered Media Appearances: Whether crashing each other’s interviews or sharing unedited, makeup-free photos on social media, their public interactions consistently celebrate aging, authenticity, and female empowerment.

Reflecting on their connection, Barrymore has famously stated that Diaz isn’t just a best friend, but “the person I would call in an absolute emergency—my sister in every life.”
