Anne Hathaway is in the middle of the promotion tour for her upcoming rom-com “The Idea of You,” in which she stars alongside Nicholas Galitzine. However, in a new interview, the Oscar-winning actress opened up about the status of another project: the third installment of “The Princess Diaries.” And there is good news.

Hathaway, 41, had her big breakthrough as Princess Mia in the Disney’s film, in which she starred alongside Julie Andrews, who played her grandmother Queen Clarisse. After the success of the first movie, they came back for a sequel, which also served as the film feature debut of another beloved actor: Chris Pine.

While the comedy films weren’t exactly a critical success, both were box office hits. The films grossed a global tally of $165 million and $134.7 million, respectively, against a budget of less than $50 million. Apart from that, they helped Hathaway earn her status as a bankable actress, leading her to other opportunities in the film industry.

Hathaway confirms that The Princess Diaries 3 is still in development

In recent years, there have been announcements of several legacy sequels, as well as reboots of beloved IPs. However, despite nostalgia being a strong motivator to greenlighting projects, not all of them get to actually come to fruition. However, Hathaway assures fans that The Princess Diaries 3 is in the works.

In an interview with V Magazine, the actress confirmed that the sequel is “in a good place,” but that was all she could say for now. “That’s all I can say. There’s nothing to announce yet. But we’re in a good place,” she added.

Talks of a possible third installment of The Princess Diaries have been going since 2016, with original director Gary Marshall wanting to complete the trilogy. However, when he passed away that year, the project was shelved. Hathaway expressed her interest in reprising the role of Mia in 2018.

It was in 2022 when The Hollywood Reported confirmed that the sequel was moving forward with TV writer Aadrita Mukerji (Reacher, Supergirl) penning the script. Debra Martin Chase, who also produced the previous installment, on board. Melissa Stack will also executive produce. So far, there’s no director attached to the project.
