Emma Seligman is one of those young filmmakers whom we definitely need to keep an eye on. Prime Video users know this well, as they have propelled “Bottoms,” her second film, to become one of the Top 10 movies in the United States.
Emma co-wrote the satirical comedy with Rachel Sennot, who rose to fame for her lead role in “Shiva Baby,” Seligman’s debut as a director of full-length features. Despite facing significant challenges in finding a company willing to accept their film due to its controversial topics, they persevered and created a streaming hit.
The title also gained considerable popularity for featuring an original score composed by Charli XCX. Some of the songs included are “Complicated” by Avril Lavigne, “Total Eclipse of the Heart” by Bonnie Tyler, and “Party 4 U” by Charli herself.
Bottoms ranks Top 5 in Prime Video US
After having a limited theatrical release on August 25, 2023, moviegoers fell in love with “Bottoms” and eagerly awaited its arrival on Prime Video. Since it was added in September, they haven’t stopped rewatching it, propelling it to the No. 5 spot in the United States.
The production has remarkably managed to surpass “Fast X,” one of the most successful titles on the catalog that consistently holds a high ranking. However, it will be challenging for “Bottoms” to outshine the Oscar-winning “The Holdovers” and the current film sensation “The Idea of You,” which hold the second and first spots respectively.
“Bottoms” revolves around best friends PJ and Josie, two high school senior girls who are outcasts and have massive crushes on the cheerleaders. Amidst a conflict that escalates violence in the football teams, they establish a fight club for women to learn self-defense, hoping to attract their love interests.
Rachel Sennot and Ayo Edebiri play the central roles, supported by outstanding performances from Ruby Cruz, Havana Rose Liu, Kaia Gerber, and Nicholas Galitzine.
It’s highly likely that the movie is being intensely watched these days due to Galitzine’s rising popularity. After co-starring with Anne Hathaway in “The Idea of You,” he has become the current trendsetter.
