Although the 1980s horror flicks are long behind us, the iconic monsters of that era continue to captivate audiences, reappearing time and again in both the big and the small screen.

One such revival is Jason Voorhees and the “Friday the 13th” franchise, which was announced on October 31, 2022, to return as a prequel show titled “Crystal Lake”. A24 is set to produce the title, with Peacock as the streaming platform where it will be released.

However, the production has encountered recent setbacks. In May 2024, executive producer and writer Bryan Fuller was fired as the studio chose to steer the project in a different direction. Now, a new showrunner has been appointed to lead the series forward.

Friday the 13th Series ‘Crystal Lake’ has a new showrunner

According to Deadline, the upcoming “Friday the 13th” series has found its new showrunner in Brad Caleb Kane, who will also serve as creator, writer, and executive producer. In a statement announcing his hiring, Kane expressed his gratitude and excitement for the opportunity:

“From the moment I watched Jason Voorhees squeeze a guy’s eyeball out of its socket (in glorious 3D!) at the tender age of 8 years old, I knew my creative path was someday destined to converge with The Man Behind The Mask,” Kane said.

“Nothing defined my childhood more than growing up in the golden age of the slasher flick, and nothing’s defined the genre more than Friday The 13th. I couldn’t be more excited for the opportunity to contribute a chapter to this iconic franchise, particularly with such fearless partners as Peacock and A24.”

Kane’s experience as a producer includes credits for “Tokyo Vice,” “Moonhaven,” and “Black Sails”. He also has an extensive acting background, with 22 credits, and is notably the singing voice of Aladdin in the 1992 animated classic.

However, it’s likely that his recent hiring is linked to his role as executive producer and co-showrunner for “Welcome to Derry,” the highly anticipated HBO series set to explore the origins of Pennywise’s terror in 1960s Derry, set to debut in 2025.
