Once centered on Cillian Murphy’s eerie awakening in an abandoned London, the story now follows Aaron Taylor-Johnson as a survivor living with a tight-knit community on a remote island, linked to the mainland by a single fortified causeway. Naturally, the fragile peace shatters when the infected return with brutal force.

Haunted dolls rarely miss, so it’s no surprise that “M3GAN” struck a chord with audiences. Now, a sequel is on the way. Set two years after M3GAN’s deadly rampage, creator Gemma is forced to bring her back—this time to stop Amelia, a military-grade weapon developed by a defense contractor who stole M3GAN’s original tech.

“28 Days Later” is returning to the big screen for one night only on May 21 in select theaters. According to Cinemark, this special screening will include bonus footage and an exclusive sneak peek at the upcoming sequel, “28 Years Later,” which is set to hit theaters on June 20, 2025. It’s worth noting that the original 2002 hit already has a sequel: “28 Weeks Later.” That film picks up after the events of the first, following U.S.-led NATO forces as they attempt to repopulate a safe zone in London. The upcoming third installment takes place three decades after the virus first escaped a medical research lab. Survivors have adapted to a changed world, with one group living on an isolated island connected to the mainland by a single, fortified causeway. When a father and son venture into the mainland, they uncover hidden secrets, terrifying dangers, and unexpected revelations.

In the last two decades, many have claimed that horror is dead. But “Smile” challenged that idea, winning over skeptics with its chilling atmosphere and psychological intensity. Now, the film is finding a second life on the small screen, ranking among the most-watched movies on Netflix in the United States, according to FlixPatrol.



Although it premiered in theaters three years ago, “Smile” remains one of the most talked-about horror titles today. A sequel was released last year and, to the surprise of many, critics have praised it as even more effective than the original.



With a box office haul of $217.4 million on a $17 million budget, the picture was already a theatrical success — and its popularity has only grown on streaming. If you haven’t yet joined the wave, here’s what you need to know.



<h2>Three years later, ‘Smile’ is still scaring everyone</h2>



The movie follows a therapist who witnesses the bizarre suicide of a patient, then becomes overwhelmed with increasingly disturbing and daunting visions that lead her to believe she’s experiencing something supernatural. Of course, she’s right, but she’s nowhere near prepared for the terror that begins to follow her every step.

A seemingly mundane element guides the horror: whenever someone smiles eerily at the protagonist, it signals danger. The film plays with this simple visual cue to build tension, making the viewer feel that anyone around her could be a threat.



From the very start of its marketing campaign, “Smile” became the talk of the town. Just days before its September 30, 2022 release, actors from the title appeared at various baseball games, sitting behind home plate completely still, smiling creepily while staring directly into the camera. One even showed up in the background of the Today show, surrounded by a crowd, wearing a “Smile” shirt and not breaking character. 



What makes those smiles even more disturbing is that they’re 100% natural, no visual effects involved. While the studio considered enhancing them digitally, director Parker Finn refused. He insisted on keeping them grounded and realistic, proving that true creepiness doesn’t require over-the-top CGI.



Interestingly, “Smile” was originally intended as a streaming-only release on Paramount+. But after test screenings received much stronger reactions than expected, Paramount pivoted to a theatrical release. The result was a box office hit and another reminder that horror remains a powerful force in keeping the theatrical experience alive.



In September 2024, Finn confirmed plans for a third film, telling SFX Magazine, “We’ve maybe only scooped a single glass of water out of the ocean.” By December, “Smile 3” was officially in development and is set to begin filming in 2025. So, it’s only a matter of time before the nightmare continues.

The inspiration for the movie came from director Kyle Edward Ball’s YouTube project, a channel called Bitesized Nightmares, where he created short films based on his subscribers’ nightmares. At some point, he noticed that a recurring theme involved being a child unable to find one’s parents in their home. Recognizing the universal appeal of this fear, he set out to bring it to the big screen.



“Skinamarink” became one of the biggest revelations of 2023, earning $2.1 million against a modest budget of $15,000, and found its way onto streaming platforms like Shudder and Mubi. Now, Ball is gearing up for his next project. Learn all about it!



<h2>All that is known so far about ‘The Land of Nod’</h2>



According to Variety, Ball is working on “The Land of Nod,” a film he will both write and direct, much like his acclaimed 2022 release. While details on the plot or release date are yet to be announced, horror fans are thrilled to learn that A24 has secured the distribution rights!

Fans of Ball, who have followed his interviews closely, point to a 2022 conversation with Variety where he mentioned two upcoming ideas: one inspired by the legend of the Pied Piper, the German rat catcher who lured rats away with his magical pipe, and another involving three strangers who all dream of the same house. Whether “The Land of Nod” is based on either of these concepts, only time will tell!

While there have certainly been horrific crimes committed in similar ways, Schindler and Netto were not inspired by any specific assassin with this modus operandi, whether recent or from the distant past. Instead, they first considered the airless situation from a more general perspective. As they explained to What’s on Netflix:



“Don’t Move was an idea that Brian and I came up with several years ago. We asked ourselves, ‘Can you make a movie that has somebody paralyzed for a majority or significant portion of it? What’s the story? What’s the character that fits into this kind of concept?’ We knew it was going to be a genre exercise. It took us a while to figure out the best character and antagonist for this situation.”



In this conversation, the duo also revealed that they were interested in experimenting with the universal fear of immobility and the claustrophobia that comes with it. Additionally, there was a desire to explore this dynamic in a beautiful setting, capturing the feeling of a gorgeous location turning into a nightmare.

<h2>Mike Flanagan and Stephen King team up for a Prime Video series adaptation of ‘Carrie’</h2>



According to Deadline, Mike Flanagan will act as showrunner for a “Carrie” series heading to <a href="https://spoiler.bolavip.com/en/prime-video">Prime Video</a>, which will consist of eight episodes and is progressing quite quickly since a writers’ room has already been opened!



This will be the first title crafted by the filmmaker with the streamer after he left Netflix following the termination of the deal he signed in 2019. This contract led to the creation of some of the most successful horror titles for TV, including “The Haunting of Hill House,” “The Haunting of Bly Manor,” “Midnight Mass,” and “The Fall of the House of Usher”. But those times are behind him, as it is rumored that the director was not happy with how “The Midnight Club” was advertised.



In 2022, it was announced that Flanagan signed a multiyear series deal with Amazon Studios. While it was widely expected that his first project under this contract would be the “Dark Tower” series, it seems that the story of Carrie, retold from his perspective, will be his first project under the Prime Video banner.
