Although it premiered in theaters three years ago, “Smile” remains one of the most talked-about horror titles today. A sequel was released last year and, to the surprise of many, critics have praised it as even more effective than the original.

<h2>Three years later, ‘Smile’ is still scaring everyone</h2>



The movie follows a therapist who witnesses the bizarre suicide of a patient, then becomes overwhelmed with increasingly disturbing and daunting visions that lead her to believe she’s experiencing something supernatural. Of course, she’s right, but she’s nowhere near prepared for the terror that begins to follow her every step.

A seemingly mundane element guides the horror: whenever someone smiles eerily at the protagonist, it signals danger. The film plays with this simple visual cue to build tension, making the viewer feel that anyone around her could be a threat.



From the very start of its marketing campaign, “Smile” became the talk of the town. Just days before its September 30, 2022 release, actors from the title appeared at various baseball games, sitting behind home plate completely still, smiling creepily while staring directly into the camera. One even showed up in the background of the Today show, surrounded by a crowd, wearing a “Smile” shirt and not breaking character. 



What makes those smiles even more disturbing is that they’re 100% natural, no visual effects involved. While the studio considered enhancing them digitally, director Parker Finn refused. He insisted on keeping them grounded and realistic, proving that true creepiness doesn’t require over-the-top CGI.



Interestingly, “Smile” was originally intended as a streaming-only release on Paramount+. But after test screenings received much stronger reactions than expected, Paramount pivoted to a theatrical release. The result was a box office hit and another reminder that horror remains a powerful force in keeping the theatrical experience alive.



In September 2024, Finn confirmed plans for a third film, telling SFX Magazine, “We’ve maybe only scooped a single glass of water out of the ocean.” By December, “Smile 3” was officially in development and is set to begin filming in 2025. Led by Kelsey Asbille and Finn Wittrock, the <a href="https://spoiler.bolavip.com/en/topic/thriller">thriller</a> produced by Sam Raimi is sure to give you nightmares.



The story follows a grieving woman attacked by a seasoned killer who injects her with a deadly paralytic agent. From that moment, she has 20 minutes to find a way to escape the psychopath, with her body gradually losing function and inching toward what seems like an inevitable death.

<h2>‘Don’t Move’: Fact or fiction?</h2>



Since the first trailer for “Don’t Move” dropped, it became clear that the picture would leave viewers terrified of being trapped like the protagonist in the movie. To achieve that sense of dread, the production needed to feel absolutely realistic. So, how did the directors bring this realism to life?

The answer is: It wasn’t based on a true case. While there have certainly been horrific crimes committed in similar ways, Schindler and Netto were not inspired by any specific assassin with this modus operandi, whether recent or from the distant past. Instead, they first considered the airless situation from a more general perspective. As they explained to What’s on Netflix:



“Don’t Move was an idea that Brian and I came up with several years ago. We asked ourselves, ‘Can you make a movie that has somebody paralyzed for a majority or significant portion of it? What’s the story? What’s the character that fits into this kind of concept?’ We knew it was going to be a genre exercise. It took us a while to figure out the best character and antagonist for this situation.”



In this conversation, the duo also revealed that they were interested in experimenting with the universal fear of immobility and the claustrophobia that comes with it. Additionally, there was a desire to explore this dynamic in a beautiful setting, capturing the feeling of a gorgeous location turning into a nightmare.

Since “Oculus” hit the big screens in 2013, the filmmaker has become one of the most renowned names in the industry, and he has certainly continued to cement that status.



Delivering hit after hit, he was widely applauded for crafting “The Haunting of Hill House” for <a href="https://spoiler.bolavip.com/en/netflix">Netflix</a> and “Doctor Sleep,” the debated sequel to “The Shining” starring Ewan McGregor. Now, it looks like he is back to working with Stephen King once again!

<h2>Mike Flanagan and Stephen King team up for a Prime Video series adaptation of ‘Carrie’</h2>



According to Deadline, Mike Flanagan will act as showrunner for a “Carrie” series heading to <a href="https://spoiler.bolavip.com/en/prime-video">Prime Video</a>, which will consist of eight episodes and is progressing quite quickly since a writers’ room has already been opened!



This will be the first title crafted by the filmmaker with the streamer after he left Netflix following the termination of the deal he signed in 2019. This contract led to the creation of some of the most successful horror titles for TV, including “The Haunting of Hill House,” “The Haunting of Bly Manor,” “Midnight Mass,” and “The Fall of the House of Usher”. But those times are behind him, as it is rumored that the director was not happy with how “The Midnight Club” was advertised.



In 2022, it was announced that Flanagan signed a multiyear series deal with Amazon Studios. While it was widely expected that his first project under this contract would be the “Dark Tower” series, it seems that the story of Carrie, retold from his perspective, will be his first project under the Prime Video banner.



This adaptation will join the list of reimaginings of the beloved Stephen King work, which includes Brian De Palma’s 1976 movie, a 2022 sequel in telepic format, and the famous 2013 remake starring Chloë Grace Moretz. While no information about the cast has been released, knowing that Flanagan enjoys working with the same actors, we can expect at least his wife, Kate Siegel, to be involved, along with other recurring stars from his past projects. The highly anticipated sequel to Parker Finn’s masterpiece has barely hit cinemas, yet it has already grossed $46 million in its opening weekend, having been made on a budget of $28 million!



This second installment follows Grammy-winning pop star Skye Riley, who becomes a victim of the Smile Entity’s curse and is determined to rid herself of it, even if it means putting her own life in danger.



As such a hit in theaters both domestically and worldwide, viewers are craving more and already wondering if there are plans for a third installment on the horizon. In a conversation with Entertainment Weekly, Finn shared his thoughts on the future of the franchise. Warning: There are spoilers ahead!



<h2>What’s next for the ‘Smile’ film series?</h2>



If you have seen the final minutes of “Smile 2,” it’s probable you have been left a bit confused about whether there will be a third part of the story of the smiling curse. At the end, Skye is on stage at her tour’s opening night at Madison Square Garden and sees the true form of the entity that has become her greatest nightmare. As it crawls into her body, she smiles eerily at the audience before ending her life gruesomely in front of all the spectators.

So, what does this mean? Will the curse now aim for world domination after infecting so many? Could there be a continuation based on a single character once again? While it’s hard to see either of these ideas come to fruition, director Parker Finn feels quite optimistic about writing more ideas to extend his tale.



“We’ll have to see how audiences react to Smile 2. The Smile films are so character-driven; it’s the reason I wanted to tell these intimate, human melodramas. I’d want to make sure that would be infused in any future Smile stories as well. There are a lot of interesting directions on where it could go. I’m staying mum on what could or could not happen, but I think it’d be really exciting.”



So, while Finn doesn’t yet have a clear idea of how the “Smile” franchise should continue, he definitely has the desire for it to keep going. If that were to happen, we can expect “Smile 3” to hit theaters in 2026, following the time gap between the first and second installments.



Plus, it’s quite strange to see new stories like “Smile” have such success, and it’s not far-fetched to think that Paramount Pictures won’t want to let go of what could potentially be a very long film series and a new horror classic. So, there are many future possibilities for the story that began with therapist Rose Cotter, but we will have to wait for a confirmation! Stay tuned.
