Netflix continues to impress with its exciting anime catalog, and October’s new addition, “Blue Box,” only strengthens its reputation. Originally a beloved sports romantic comedy manga created by Kouji Miura, the story has now been adapted into a television series that fans are sure to enjoy.

The plot centers on Taiki Inomata, a student at Eimei Junior and Senior High who plays on the boys’ badminton team. Each morning, he trains alongside his crush, Chinatsu Kano, a member of the girls’ basketball team. Their relationship takes a turn when Chinatsu moves in with Taiki’s family after her parents travel abroad for work, and Taiki tries to bond with her romantically.

Whether viewers are longtime fans of the original material or discovering “Blue Box” for the first time, many are curious about the possibility of a second season on Netflix. Is it going to happen?

Will Netflix’s ‘Blue Box’ have a Season 2?

Truth is, many fans are confident that a second season is inminent because the manga, still ongoing as of 2024, has been collected into 16 volumes with more to come. However, this doesn’t guarantee a renewal for the anime.

The real factor that will determine whether Netflix greenlights another season isn’t just the availability of source material, but how well the series performs in terms of viewership. This is a concern for the platform, as anime titles often struggle to break into the global Top 10. Plus, even strong rankings don’t always guarantee survival, as evidenced by the surprise cancellation of “Dead Boy Detectives,” which performed well for several weeks but still got cut.

Any decision about a second season likely won’t be made for several months, as the first season’s weekly releases will extend into early 2025, giving Netflix ample time to assess its performance.

It’s also important to note that a Netflix cancellation wouldn’t mean the end of the anime. “Blue Box” is animated by Telecom Animation Film and airs on TBS and its affiliates, so it would continue on its main platform even if the streamer chooses not to continue simulcasting.
