‘The Rookie,’ ABC’s American police procedural crime drama, is currently one of the top series on Netflix globally. According to FlixPatrol, as of Feb. 5th, the series is the eighth most-watched series on the platform worldwide.

However, in the US, the show isn’t available on the platform, but instead it can be streamed on Hulu. The series follows John Nolan, played by Nathan Fillion, a man in his forties who became the oldest rookie at the LAPD.

It also stars Alyssa Diaz, Richard T. Jones, Titus Makin Jr., Melissa O’Neil, Afton Williamson, Mekia Cox, Shawn Ashmore, and Eric Winter. The show will premiere its sixth season on Feb. 20th on ABC.

Procedural series are more popular than ever

The success of “The Rookie” on Netflix is not surprising, as it follows the trend of “old-shows” or more traditional 20-episode season TV becoming a hit on streaming. For example, “Suits,” which ran from 2011 and 2019, was the most watched series on streaming in 2023, according to Nielsen.

The legal procedural drama, which starred Meghan Markle, Gabriel Macht, and Patrick Adams, had 57.7 billion streaming minutes, according to reports from Yahoo. Other popular shows on streaming were “NCIS,” “Grey’s Anatomy” and “The Big Bang Theory,” which all landed on the Top 10.

In an article for Slate, Sam Adams observes that procedurals (workplace drama that solve a problem per week) are also the most popular series on broadcast TV, as 2023’s Top 10 also include “FBI,” “Blue Bloods,” “Chicago Fire,” and “Fire Country.”
