The witches of Salem are stirring again—this time with more certainty than ever. Hocus Pocus 3 has officially entered development, with Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy confirmed to reprise their roles as the Sanderson Sisters, the trio that turned a modest 1993 release into a Halloween institution.

The announcement comes after years of occasional updates and speculation, but it now carries stronger momentum following the breakout success of Hocus Pocus 2 on Disney+. The picture brought the characters back to a new generation while reinforcing their nostalgic appeal.

<h2>Will the original cast return for ‘Hocus Pocus 3’?</h2>

The return of the Sanderson Sisters is the strongest pillar of the project. Midler, Parker, and Najimy are not only expected back—they’ve been actively involved in conversations about the sequel for years.

Beyond the main trio, there is growing interest in bringing back legacy characters from the original film. Actors like Thora Birch (Dani) have expressed openness to returning, while other cast members have also hinted at possible involvement if approached.

<h2>What could the plot of ‘Hocus Pocus 3’ be about?</h2>

Plot details remain tightly under wraps, but there are clear narrative threads to build on. The ending of Hocus Pocus 2 left the door open for continuation, particularly through the mythology surrounding the Black Flame Candle and the younger characters introduced in the sequel.

Early indications suggest the story may expand the lore introduced in the second film, including elements tied to the “Mother Witch” and the origins of the Sandersons’ powers.

<h2>Is there a release date for ‘Hocus Pocus 3’?</h2>

There is no official release date yet, and production timelines remain uncertain. However, industry reports suggest that filming could begin between late 2025 and early 2026, depending on scheduling and development progress.

Some projections point to a possible release around Halloween 2027, which would align with the franchise’s seasonal appeal and typical production timelines. For now, the timeline remains fluid, with Disney still working through scripting, budgeting, and logistical planning.

<h2>Will ‘Hocus Pocus 3’ be released in theaters or on Disney+?</h2>

One of the biggest shifts under consideration is the release strategy. While Hocus Pocus 2 premiered exclusively on Disney+, early reports indicate that the third entry could receive a theatrical release, or at least include one as part of its rollout.

“Mortal Kombat II,” which officially hits theaters today, currently holds a 68% approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes based on 103 reviews.

The franchise has spent the last ten years struggling to replicate the cult-classic energy of its debut, with the three previous installments—released in 1995, 1997, and 2021—all failing to break the 60% threshold required to move past “Rotten” status.

<h2>A New Era for Earthrealm’s Champions</h2>

Directed once again by Simon McQuoid and penned by Jeremy Slater, the sequel picks up where the 2021 reboot left off, expanding the scope of the tournament while leaning into the more eccentric elements of the source material.

The story follows the recruitment of the fan-favorite Hollywood egoist Johnny Cage, portrayed by Karl Urban, who joins forces with Earthrealm’s defenders against the looming threat of Emperor Shao Kahn.

The path to this critical success was not without its hurdles, as the production faced significant delays during its Australian shoot. Principal photography began in mid-2023 but was forced into a months-long hiatus due to the SAG-AFTRA strike, eventually wrapping in early 2024.

Despite these interruptions, the creative team focused on refining the tone, with Slater previously noting a desire to embrace the weirdness of the games and respond directly to the mixed reception of the predecessor. While the critical consensus is described as mixed-to-positive, the general feeling among reviewers is that the sequel is a marked upgrade over the 2021 film.

Looking ahead, the momentum for the series shows no signs of slowing down. Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema have already signaled their confidence in the franchise’s current trajectory, with a third film officially in development. With Jeremy Slater returning to write the next chapter and series co-creator Ed Boon already teasing future logos, the sequel curse that has long plagued video game adaptations seems to have finally been broken by a well-placed fatality.

“Angry Birds” has officially been inducted into the World Video Game Hall of Fame at The Strong National Museum of Play in Rochester, New York.

According to Variety, the long running franchise joins this year’s class alongside “Dragon Quest,” “FIFA International Soccer” and “Silent Hill,” marking another milestone for one of the most commercially successful mobile games ever released.

<h2>‘Angry Birds’ Joins Gaming’s Most Influential Titles</h2>

Created by Finnish studio Rovio Entertainment and first released in 2009, “Angry Birds” arrived at a moment when smartphones were rapidly reshaping how audiences interacted with games. Its simple touch controls and physics based gameplay helped introduce millions of casual users to mobile gaming.

The World Video Game Hall of Fame considers several factors when selecting inductees, including cultural impact, longevity, international recognition and influence on the gaming industry. Since launching in 2015, the Hall has honored titles viewed as defining works within the medium, with final selections determined through votes from journalists, scholars and industry experts alongside public input.

“Angry Birds” had previously been nominated multiple times before finally securing induction this year. Over time, the franchise evolved into a broader entertainment brand that included merchandise, animated series, theme park attractions and theatrical films. “The Angry Birds Movie” debuted in 2016, followed by a sequel in 2019, while a third installment is scheduled for release later this year.

The original game also played a major role in Rovio’s rise within the gaming industry. Its breakout success transformed the company into a major player in mobile entertainment and helped establish smartphone gaming as a dominant force in mainstream culture during the early 2010s.

Instead of continuing the storyline established in 2024’s “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” director Matt Shakman and screenwriter Josh Friedman are teaming up to deliver a completely original narrative within the iconic sci-fi universe.

The cinematic hierarchy of Earth is preparing for yet another massive creative shift. In a surprising announcement that completely upended fan expectations, a brand-new Planet of the Apes motion picture is officially in active development at 20th Century Studios. With a highly celebrated superhero director taking the helm and a veteran science fiction writer crafting the script, the enduring dystopian property is gearing up for a fascinating, unexpected evolution.

<h2>A Surprising Pivot from ‘Kingdom’</h2>

The sudden announcement sent immediate shockwaves through the dedicated fan base, primarily because the previous theatrical entry, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, ended on a massive, unresolved cliffhanger. According to Deadline, sources indicate that this upcoming feature will definitively not be a continuation of Wes Ball’s 2024 film.

Instead of immediately resolving the lingering conflicts between Noa and Mae, the studio has opted to forge an entirely fresh path forward. This bold departure indicates a strong desire to keep the decades-old saga unpredictable and narratively versatile.

<h2>The Marvel Connection</h2>

Acclaimed filmmaker Matt Shakman, who recently helmed Marvel’s highly anticipated superhero reboot The Fantastic Four: First Steps, has been officially tapped to direct the upcoming adventure. He will collaborate closely with veteran screenwriter Josh Friedman, a powerhouse who not only co-wrote Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes but also collaborated with Shakman on the recent Fantastic Four script.

Franchise architects Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver are also attached to produce the project alongside Shakman, bringing their deep institutional knowledge to the table. This formidable assembly of behind-the-scenes talent guarantees a visually spectacular and emotionally complex theatrical experience.

<h2>Expanding the Primate Universe</h2>

While Friedman’s newest script will intentionally abandon the specific characters established in the most recent installment, it will firmly remain grounded on the familiar planet where intelligent apes reign as the superior species. The deliberate decision to sever ties with recent protagonists suggests that the writing team is eager to explore unexplored eras or entirely new geographical locations within the established mythology. This narrative separation grants the filmmakers immense freedom to design novel primate cultures without being shackled to strict, immediate continuity constraints.

<h3>What the Future Holds</h3>

Although specific plot details remain tightly locked inside the 20th Century Studios vault, the sheer caliber of the attached visionaries has already generated immense industry buzz. Shakman’s proven ability to balance intimate character dynamics with blockbuster spectacle—as seen in his Emmy-nominated work on WandaVision—makes him an ideal candidate to shepherd the legendary brand forward. As pre-production officially ramps up, the entertainment world will be eagerly waiting for casting announcements and conceptual artwork. This bold new chapter is perfectly positioned to redefine the enduring, monumental legacy of the series for a modern generation.

While the global film industry has historically struggled with achieving gender parity behind the camera, female directors consistently deliver some of the most groundbreaking, financially successful, and critically celebrated features in modern cinema.&nbsp;

From massive superhero blockbusters dominating the summer box office to intimate independent dramas exploring complex human emotions, these outstanding auteurs continually challenge conventional narratives. Their extraordinary contributions prove that an inclusive, diverse directorial perspective is absolutely essential for the continued evolution of the art form.

Here are ten spectacular movies directed by women that fundamentally transformed the entertainment landscape.

<h2>Past Lives (2023)</h2>

Celine Song made a phenomenal, heart-wrenching directorial debut with this quiet, incredibly sophisticated romantic drama. The narrative spans twenty-four years, following two childhood friends from South Korea as they periodically reconnect across different continents and fundamentally different life stages. The filmmaker handles the complex themes of destiny, immigration, and roads not taken with breathtaking emotional maturity.

<h2>Little Women (2019)</h2>

Greta Gerwig breathed magnificent new life into Louisa May Alcott’s classic literary masterpiece through a brilliant, non-linear narrative structure. Featuring an incredibly talented ensemble cast, the feature elegantly highlights the economic realities of nineteenth-century womanhood while celebrating the fierce bond between the March sisters. The vibrant costume design, rapid-fire dialogue, and deeply emotional storytelling solidified it as the definitive modern adaptation of the beloved novel. Her clever structural choices successfully elevated a familiar coming-of-age tale into a sophisticated exploration of artistic ambition and female independence.

<h2>Hamnet (2025)</h2>

Chloé Zhao successfully translated Maggie O’Farrell’s renowned historical fiction novel into a remarkably poignant cinematic experience. The emotionally heavy narrative focuses entirely on William Shakespeare’s wife, Agnes, as she navigates overwhelming grief following the tragic death of their young son. By shifting the historical lens away from the legendary playwright and onto his fiercely independent spouse, the visionary filmmaker crafted a stunning meditation on maternal sorrow. It officially solidified her status as one of the most versatile, empathetic storytellers working in modern Hollywood today.

<h2>Aftersun (2022)</h2>

Charlotte Wells made a spectacularly agonizing directorial debut with this quiet, intensely nostalgic drama about a fractured father-daughter vacation in Turkey. Paul Mescal and Frankie Corio deliver breathtakingly naturalistic performances, capturing the unspoken tensions and fleeting joys of a late-nineties summer holiday. The creator brilliantly utilizes old camcorder footage and fragmented memories to explore the painful realization that we rarely understand our parents’ internal struggles until we reach adulthood. It remains a flawlessly paced masterpiece that permanently impacted audiences across the globe.

<h2>Little Miss Sunshine (2006)</h2>

Valerie Faris, co-directing alongside Jonathan Dayton, delivered a wildly hilarious and genuinely heartwarming road-trip comedy that defined the mid-2000s independent film boom. The chaotic narrative follows a deeply dysfunctional family cramming into a bright yellow Volkswagen bus to support their youngest daughter’s eccentric beauty pageant dreams. Faris flawlessly balanced incredibly dark humor with moments of quiet familial tenderness, creating a highly authentic portrait of lovable losers. The project ultimately scored prestigious award victories, proving that character-driven indie comedies could successfully captivate mainstream international audiences.

<h2>The Power of the Dog (2021)</h2>

Jane Campion delivered a haunting, visually magnificent masterpiece that completely revolutionized the traditional Western genre. Benedict Cumberbatch portrays a cruel, hyper-masculine rancher who mercilessly torments his brother’s new wife and her sensitive teenage son on the vast Montana plains. Campion’s visionary, slow-burn storytelling earned her the prestigious Academy Award for Best Director, cementing her legacy as an untouchable dramatic auteur.

<h2>Wonder Woman (2017)</h2>

Patty Jenkins officially proved that female-led superhero blockbusters could dominate the global box office with this sweeping origin story. By perfectly balancing thrilling, large-scale action sequences with genuine emotional earnestness, she successfully brought the iconic Amazonian warrior into the twenty-first century. The monumental financial success and widespread cultural resonance confirmed that audiences were desperately hungry for diverse, empowering comic book adaptations.

<h2>Selma (2014)</h2>

Ava DuVernay provided a profoundly moving, meticulously researched look at a pivotal moment in the American civil rights movement. Chronicling Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legendary voting rights marches in Alabama, the feature avoids traditional biographical clichés to focus on the grueling, strategic reality of political organizing. The phenomenal historical drama rightfully earned widespread critical acclaim, highlighting the enduring necessity of fierce, organized protest.

<h2>Nomadland (2020)</h2>

Chloé Zhao crafted a breathtakingly poetic meditation on grief, economic displacement, and the vast American landscape. Frances McDormand delivers a deeply grounded performance as a widow traveling through the western United States in a converted van, interacting seamlessly with real-life transient communities. Zhao’s unique blend of documentary-style realism and sweeping cinematography secured her a thoroughly deserved Oscar victory.

<h2>The Matrix (1999)</h2>

The Wachowski sisters completely redefined modern science fiction and action choreography with this visually groundbreaking cyberpunk epic. Blending philosophical inquiries about simulated realities with wire-fu martial arts, the siblings created a cultural juggernaut that fundamentally altered Hollywood production techniques forever. The iconic visual effects and existential themes continue to heavily influence contemporary digital storytelling and modern speculative fiction.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the reaction to the recently released trailer has been split between admiration for the film’s scale and unease over some of its creative choices, particularly in how it presents the ancient world.

<h2>Why ‘The Odyssey’ Is Sparking Debate Before Its Release</h2>

Universal’s newest trailer leans heavily into spectacle, showcasing sweeping battle sequences, vast landscapes, and a high-profile ensemble led by Matt Damon as Odysseus. The scale is unmistakable, with the production positioned as Nolan’s most ambitious to date, shot entirely on IMAX 70 mm cameras and backed by a reported $250 million budget.

Early reactions have largely embraced the film’s visual scope and its star-driven appeal, which includes Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya, and Charlize Theron.

Yet much of the discussion has centered on a more unexpected detail: how the characters sound. Instead of the traditionally adopted British inflection often associated with historical epics, Nolan’s cast delivers dialogue in distinctly American accents, paired with contemporary phrasing. In one widely circulated moment, Odysseus rallies troops with a modern-sounding “Let’s go!,” a choice that has prompted debate about tone and immersion.

As explained by The Hollywood Reporter, the decision marks a clear break from long-standing Hollywood convention. Films set in antiquity, from “The Ten Commandments” to “Gladiator,” have typically relied on British accents as a kind of cinematic shorthand for the past.

That approach has extended even to fantasy worlds, where productions like “Game of Thrones” have used similar vocal cues to evoke a sense of distance and gravitas. Nolan’s approach appears to discard that tradition entirely.

Online response has reflected that divide. Some viewers have questioned whether contemporary dialogue undercuts the story’s mythic weight, while others argue that the industry’s reliance on British accents has always been an arbitrary convention. The debate has extended beyond language to broader concerns about historical authenticity, including costume design that appears to draw from later periods of Greek history and ship designs that differ from those associated with the Bronze Age setting.

Nolan’s “The Odyssey,” adapted from Homer’s epic poem, follows the Greek king’s long journey home after the Trojan War, encountering figures such as Polyphemus, Calypso, and the Sirens along the way.

Written and directed by Nolan and produced alongside Emma Thomas under Syncopy, the picture began development in 2024 and filmed across multiple international locations. It is scheduled for release on July 17, arriving with expectations that remain as high as the scrutiny surrounding it.

The wait is finally over. Universal Pictures dropped the first full-length trailer for Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, giving audiences a massive, sweeping look at the director’s ambitious adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek epic.

Slated to hit theaters on July 17, 2026, the $250 million production has been shrouded in secrecy for months. While a brief teaser played exclusively in theaters last year, this new trailer officially brings the 10-year voyage of Odysseus to the internet—and it is nothing short of breathtaking. Featuring sweeping IMAX cinematography, glimpses of terrifying mythological threats, and one of the most star-studded ensembles in recent memory, The Odyssey is already positioning itself as the undisputed cinematic event of the summer.

Here is a breakdown of the new footage, the massive expectations surrounding the film, and what Nolan had to say about his leading men.

<h2>A Massive Mythological Scale</h2>

Nolan is famously known for his practical effects and gritty realism, which left many fans wondering how he would handle a story featuring literal sea monsters and angry gods. The new trailer answers that question with deafening, methodical drum beats and awe-inspiring visuals.

<ul><li>The Cast: Matt Damon steps into the lead role of Odysseus, a weary warrior desperate to return to Ithaca after the Trojan War. Anne Hathaway stars as his loyal wife, Penelope, while Tom Holland takes on the crucial role of their son, Telemachus.</li><li>The Antagonists: The footage offers intense glimpses of Robert Pattinson as Antinous, one of the treacherous suitors vying for Penelope’s hand and the throne of Ithaca.</li><li>The Mythological Threats: Nolan isn’t shying away from the fantasy elements. The two-and-a-half-minute trailer features terrifying shots of a massive whirlpool, a towering Cyclops, and Charlize Theron as the enchanting nymph Calypso.</li></ul>

<h2>“The Marvel of Its Day”</h2>

In a recent appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to promote the trailer, Nolan discussed his approach to the source material. Interestingly, the director—who fundamentally reshaped the modern superhero genre with The Dark Knight trilogy—drew a direct line between ancient Greek poetry and modern comic book blockbusters.

“Even comic book culture, whether you’re talking about Marvel or D.C. or all the rest, a lot of it comes directly from the Homeric Epics,” Nolan explained. “The thing about Homer is, nobody knows if that was a person. Homer, in a way, is the sort of George Lucas of his time… it is the Marvel of its day. It’s very directly this desire for us to feel or believe gods could walk amongst us, and I think the modern comic book is kind of our expression of that.”

<h2>High Praise for Tom Holland</h2>

Considering the film’s cast is packed with actors who have anchored major superhero franchises (including Holland, Pattinson, and Zendaya), Colbert and Nolan naturally touched upon the talent bringing this myth to life.

Nolan, who is notoriously selective about the actors he collaborates with, took a specific moment to single out Tom Holland’s performance as Telemachus. The director made it abundantly clear that he was deeply impressed by the young star’s capabilities on set.

“He’s amazing,” Nolan said of Holland. “I’ve not worked with him before, but I would love to work with him again. I mean, he’s just an incredible talent, as everybody else but me knew before I sort of got into it with him. But he’s so great. I would love to work with him again.”

<h2>The Weight of Expectations</h2>

Adapting one of the foundational texts of Western literature is no easy feat, even for an Academy Award-winning filmmaker fresh off the massive success of Oppenheimer. Nolan is acutely aware of the pressure.

Speaking to the Associated Press recently, the director acknowledged the daunting task of meeting audience expectations. “There’s a massive amount of pressure. Anyone taking on The Odyssey is taking on the hopes and dreams of people for epic movies everywhere, and that comes with a huge responsibility,” he noted.

Drawing from his experience reviving Batman, Nolan added, “What I learned from that experience is that what people want from a movie about a beloved story, a beloved set of characters, is they want a strong and sincere interpretation. They want to know that a filmmaker has gone to the mat for it.”

Judging by the sheer scale, ambition, and visual majesty of the new trailer, it is safe to say that Nolan has, indeed, gone to the mat.

The Odyssey premieres exclusively in theaters and IMAX on July 17, 2026.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, “The Fast and the Furious” will be included in this year’s Cannes Classics selection, a program that continues to expand its influence within the festival by spotlighting restoration work and cinematic legacy.

<h2>Cannes Classics Brings ‘The Fast and the Furious’ Back to the Big Screen</h2>

“The Fast and the Furious” will screen in a restored version during a midnight slot at the Grand Théâtre Lumière, with cast members Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez and Jordana Brewster expected to attend. The production, directed by Rob Cohen, is part of a broader lineup that highlights both widely recognized titles and lesser-known works from across decades of film history.

Originally released in 2001, “The Fast and the Furious” centers on an undercover police officer who infiltrates a street racing crew in Los Angeles while investigating a string of hijackings. Starring Paul Walker alongside Diesel, Rodriguez and Brewster, the picture marked a turning point for its principal cast and launched a long-running franchise that has since expanded across multiple sequels and formats.

The Cannes screening places the movie alongside a diverse slate of restored works, including “Pan’s Labyrinth” by Guillermo del Toro, “Farewell My Concubine” from Chen Kaige and “Man of Iron” by Andrzej Wajda, among others.

By positioning a mainstream action title within a program traditionally associated with auteur cinema and archival discoveries, Cannes Classics underscores the evolving definition of film heritage and the enduring cultural footprint of early 21st century blockbusters.

The unsettling world introduced in Longlegs is set to continue its descent into darkness. Following the breakout success of the 2024 horror hit, a new installment has been officially scheduled for release on 2028, marking the return of both director Osgood Perkins and star Nicolas Cage.

The project arrives after the original film’s unexpected box office impact, where its cryptic marketing and chilling tone helped turn it into one of the most discussed horror releases of recent years. Rather than positioning itself as a traditional sequel, the new film is being developed as a story set within the same universe.

<h2>Longlegs Universe Expands Again</h2>

The eerie world of Longlegs is officially not done haunting audiences. After the 2024 breakout success of the mystery-horror film, a new installment has been slated for January 14, 2028, with Nicolas Cage confirmed to return in his unsettling role.

The project continues under the vision of director Osgood Perkins, marking a reunion that keeps the creative core of the original intact. According to industry reports, the film is being developed as a continuation within the Longlegs universe rather than a straightforward, traditional sequel.

What makes the announcement especially intriguing is the deliberate lack of narrative clarity surrounding the project. Instead of picking up a clean storyline, the new film is expected to expand the mythology built in the original—an FBI investigation that slowly unraveled into something far more occult and psychologically fragmented.

The first Longlegs became a surprise hit in 2024, blending procedural crime elements with an increasingly surreal sense of dread, ultimately earning strong box office results for an independent horror release.

Not every biopic is interested in telling a life story from beginning to end. Some pictures choose a far stranger — and far more revealing — route, breaking away from the traditional formula to explore fame, identity and memory through unconventional storytelling.

From fragmented timelines to surreal visuals and imagined conversations, films like Marie Antoinette, Amadeus and The Last Temptation of Christ proved that biographical cinema does not always need historical precision to leave a lasting impression.

<h2>Marie Antoinette</h2>

Instead of portraying the infamous French queen as a distant historical figure trapped inside textbooks, Sofia Coppola transformed Marie Antoinette into a dreamy, modern portrait of isolation, excess, and youth.

The film mixes 18th-century politics with contemporary music, pastel aesthetics, and emotional detachment, creating a version of Versailles that feels strangely alive and intimate.

Kirsten Dunst’s performance avoids grand speeches and dramatic breakdowns, focusing instead on the quiet loneliness behind the diamonds, gossip, and towering wigs. Rather than explaining Marie Antoinette, the movie invites audiences to sit inside her confusion as the world around her slowly collapses.

<h2>Born to Be Blue</h2>

Robert Budreau’s Born to Be Blue refuses to behave like a conventional jazz biopic. Instead of documenting every chapter of Chet Baker’s career, the film drifts through memory and fiction like one of Baker’s trumpet solos, blurring the line between reality and performance.

Ethan Hawke plays the legendary musician with a fragile exhaustion that turns the movie into something deeply melancholic, especially as Baker struggles to rebuild both his music and himself after addiction nearly destroyed him. The film openly embraces its “semi-factual, semi-fictional” structure, choosing emotional truth over strict accuracy.

<h2>Andrei Rublev</h2>

Few biographical films feel as spiritual and monumental as Andrei Tarkovsky’s Andrei Rublev. Rather than offering a straightforward account of the famous Russian icon painter, the movie unfolds like a meditation on faith, suffering, art, and silence during one of the darkest periods in Russian history.

Tarkovsky barely treats Rublev as a traditional protagonist; instead, he observes the chaos surrounding him — war, brutality, famine, fear — and slowly asks what role an artist can possibly have in a broken world. The result is less a biography than a philosophical journey disguised as cinema.

<h2>Bronson</h2>

Nicolas Winding Refn turned the life of Britain’s most notorious prisoner into something that feels halfway between a stage play, a nightmare, and a violent dark comedy.

In Bronson, Tom Hardy does not simply portray Michael Peterson — better known as Charles Bronson — he practically explodes across the screen with theatrical monologues, surreal imagery, and bursts of uncontrollable rage.

The movie constantly reminds viewers that Bronson himself treated his criminal identity like performance art, transforming prison violence into celebrity mythology. Instead of searching for psychological explanations, Refn leans into chaos, ego, and spectacle.

<h2>The Last Temptation of Christ</h2>

Martin Scorsese’s The Last Temptation of Christ caused outrage long before audiences even entered theaters, largely because it dared to portray Jesus not as an untouchable religious symbol, but as a man filled with fear, doubt, temptation, and emotional conflict.

Adapted from Nikos Kazantzakis’ controversial novel, the film strips away the polished certainty often associated with biblical epics and replaces it with vulnerability. Willem Dafoe’s performance gives the story an almost painfully human dimension, turning the movie into an exploration of sacrifice and identity rather than a conventional retelling of scripture.

<h2>I’m Not There</h2>

Todd Haynes approached Bob Dylan’s life like a puzzle with missing pieces, turning I’m Not There into one of the boldest anti-biopics ever made. Instead of casting a single actor, the film splits Dylan into multiple identities played by Cate Blanchett, Heath Ledger, Christian Bale, Richard Gere, and others, each representing a different version of the musician’s constantly shifting public persona.

The movie never tries to explain Dylan in a conventional sense; it embraces contradiction, reinvention, and mystery, much like Dylan himself spent decades doing in real life. Critics and fans alike have often described the film as confusing, hypnotic, and strangely perfect for an artist who always resisted definition.

<h2>Ed Wood</h2>

Tim Burton transformed the story of Hollywood’s so-called “worst director” into an unexpectedly heartfelt love letter to artistic obsession. Shot in luminous black and white, Ed Wood avoids mocking its protagonist and instead celebrates his endless optimism, chaotic creativity, and refusal to stop making movies no matter how disastrous they became.

Johnny Depp plays Wood with infectious enthusiasm, while Martin Landau’s Oscar-winning Bela Lugosi adds surprising emotional weight to the film. Rather than focusing on historical precision, Burton fills the movie with exaggerated charm and cinematic fantasy, making the entire biopic feel as eccentric as the filmmaker it portrays.

<h2>At Eternity’s Gate</h2>

Julian Schnabel’s At Eternity’s Gate barely resembles a traditional artist biopic. Instead of carefully documenting Vincent van Gogh’s career milestones, the film immerses itself in the painter’s fractured emotional world through drifting camerawork, blurred imagery, and long moments of silence.

Willem Dafoe’s performance captures Van Gogh less as a tortured genius stereotype and more as a deeply sensitive man struggling to understand both himself and the world surrounding him. The movie often feels like stepping directly inside one of Van Gogh’s paintings — beautiful, unstable, intimate, and painfully alive.

<h2>I, Tonya</h2>

Craig Gillespie approached the scandal surrounding Tonya Harding with the energy of a dark comedy rather than a solemn sports drama, and that decision completely changed the tone of the biopic genre.

I, Tonya jumps between contradictory interviews, unreliable narration, fourth-wall breaks, and absurd humor, constantly reminding viewers that truth itself became impossible to separate from media spectacle.

Margot Robbie gives Harding a raw, explosive humanity that pushes beyond tabloid caricature, while Allison Janney’s viciously hilarious performance as Harding’s mother turns every scene into controlled chaos. The film does not ask audiences to forgive Tonya Harding, but it forces them to reconsider how America turned her life into entertainment.

<h2>Jackie</h2>

Pablo Larraín’s Jackie narrows one of the most famous tragedies in American history into an intensely personal psychological portrait. Rather than covering John F. Kennedy’s presidency from beginning to end, the film focuses almost entirely on the days immediately following his assassination, trapping Jacqueline Kennedy inside grief, performance, and political mythology.

Natalie Portman’s haunting portrayal captures a woman simultaneously collapsing in private while carefully constructing the public image that would define Camelot forever. The movie unfolds like memory itself — fragmented, elegant, and emotionally suffocating.

<h2>Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters</h2>

Paul Schrader’s Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters may be one of the most visually daring biopics ever made. Instead of following Japanese author Yukio Mishima through a conventional timeline, the film divides his life into thematic chapters while blending black-and-white flashbacks, theatrical recreations of his novels, and the final day leading to his ritual suicide in 1970.

Schrader uses radically different visual styles to separate fiction from reality, creating a movie that feels less like a biography and more like a psychological self-portrait assembled from obsession, nationalism, beauty, and performance.

Critics at the time praised its avant-garde structure and Philip Glass’ hypnotic score, while Roger Ebert later described it as a “triumph of concise writing and construction”.

<h2>BlacKkKlansman</h2>

Spike Lee took the unbelievable true story of detective Ron Stallworth — a Black police officer who infiltrated the Ku Klux Klan in the 1970s — and transformed it into something far more politically explosive than a standard crime biopic.

BlacKkKlansman constantly shifts between satire, thriller, historical drama, and contemporary social commentary, using humor and absurdity to expose the terrifying persistence of racism in America.

Lee intentionally blurs past and present throughout the film, especially in its devastating final moments, where real footage from Charlottesville suddenly collides with the story. Rather than trapping the narrative inside nostalgia, the movie weaponizes history against the present day.

<h2>The Social Network</h2>

David Fincher’s The Social Network transformed the creation of Facebook into something that resembles a Shakespearean betrayal drama more than a tech biopic. Aaron Sorkin’s razor-sharp screenplay avoids the inspirational clichés usually attached to genius entrepreneurs and instead paints Mark Zuckerberg as brilliant, isolated, insecure, and emotionally detached.

The film unfolds through depositions and fractured recollections, making every version of the truth feel incomplete or self-serving. Combined with Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’ cold, haunting score, the movie captures Silicon Valley not as a land of innovation, but as a machine built on ambition, resentment, and social alienation.

<h2>Oppenheimer</h2>

Christopher Nolan approached Oppenheimer with the structure of a political thriller and the emotional intensity of a psychological horror film. Instead of simply documenting J. Robert Oppenheimer’s role in creating the atomic bomb, Nolan fractures time itself, jumping across decades, interrogations, memories, and political hearings to explore guilt, ego, paranoia, and power.

The film rarely slows down to explain history in traditional biopic fashion; it overwhelms audiences with momentum, dialogue, and tension, mirroring the unstoppable force that nuclear creation unleashed on the world.

Cillian Murphy’s performance keeps the story grounded inside a man who slowly realizes that scientific achievement and moral catastrophe may become impossible to separate.

<h2>BlackBerry</h2>

Matt Johnson’s BlackBerry turns the rise and collapse of the world’s first smartphone empire into a frantic corporate tragicomedy filled with panic, ego, and technological obsession. Rather than presenting the founders of Research In Motion as polished Silicon Valley visionaries, the film portrays them as awkward outsiders suddenly crushed by the ruthless speed of the tech industry.

Glenn Howerton’s explosive performance as executive Jim Balsillie injects the movie with chaotic energy, while the screenplay constantly emphasizes how quickly innovation can become extinction in the modern market. Critics widely praised the film for transforming a business story into something tense, funny, and unexpectedly human.

<h2>Love &amp; Mercy</h2>

Bill Pohlad’s Love &amp; Mercy avoids the predictable “rise-and-fall musician biopic” formula by splitting Beach Boys legend Brian Wilson into two different timelines portrayed by Paul Dano and John Cusack.

Instead of focusing on fame itself, the film dives into Wilson’s fragile mental state, his groundbreaking creative process during the making of Pet Sounds, and the years he spent trapped under the control of controversial therapist Eugene Landy.

The movie moves with a dreamlike emotional rhythm, layering music, trauma, and memory together in ways that feel deeply personal rather than overly dramatized. Many critics highlighted how the film captured the sound and emotional texture of Wilson’s mind instead of merely recounting his career milestones.

<h2>Raging Bull</h2>

Martin Scorsese’s Raging Bull shattered expectations of what a sports biopic could look like. Shot in stark black and white, the film transforms boxer Jake LaMotta’s life into a brutal study of masculinity, violence, jealousy, and self-destruction.

Robert De Niro’s legendary performance refuses to romanticize LaMotta, portraying him instead as a man consumed by paranoia and uncontrollable rage both inside and outside the ring.

Scorsese’s boxing scenes feel less like athletic competition and more like psychological warfare, with distorted sound, surreal slow motion, and bursts of operatic violence turning every fight into emotional collapse. Over time, the film became widely regarded as one of the greatest American movies ever made, not because it celebrates its subject, but because it dissects him.

Now that Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway have officially reunited for The Devil Wears Prada 2, Hollywood has proven that even the most perfect, self-contained movies can successfully return to the big screen decades later. Legacy sequels are dominating the 2026 box office, and it has fans looking at their DVD shelves and streaming queues, wondering: who is next?

While some cinematic masterpieces should remain untouched, there are certain films that organically beg for a continuation. Whether they ended on a massive cliffhanger, featured unmatched lead chemistry, or simply left audiences wanting to spend more time in their vibrant worlds, these are five movies that fans are practically begging studios to greenlight for a sequel.

<h2>1. The Nice Guys (2016)</h2>

If there is one movie the internet will never stop campaigning for, it is Shane Black’s brilliantly chaotic 1970s buddy-cop comedy. The comedic chemistry between Ryan Gosling’s bumbling private eye and Russell Crowe’s cynical enforcer was absolute lightning in a bottle. Despite overwhelming critical acclaim, the film underperformed at the box office because it was released against massive summer blockbusters. However, thanks to streaming, it has garnered a massive, highly vocal cult following. Fans desperately want to see Holland March and Jackson Healy take on another bizarre Los Angeles conspiracy.

<h2>2. Edge of Tomorrow (2014)</h2>

“Live. Die. Repeat.” This Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt sci-fi actioner is widely considered one of the greatest time-loop movies ever made. Director Doug Liman has openly discussed having a script ready (reportedly titled Live Die Repeat and Repeat), and both lead actors have expressed a strong desire to return. The only thing standing in the way has been aligning the schedules of two of Hollywood’s biggest, busiest stars. With Blunt’s star power higher than ever and Cruise continually pushing the physical boundaries of action cinema, a return to the mechanized alien battlefield feels long overdue.

<h2>3. White Chicks (2004)</h2>

Despite terrible reviews from critics upon its initial release, the Wayans brothers’ undercover comedy evolved into an untouchable pop-culture juggernaut. Over two decades later, the film’s iconic one-liners, Terry Crews’s passionate rendition of “A Thousand Miles,” and the sheer absurdity of the premise still dominate social media memes and TikTok sounds. Marlon Wayans has frequently teased the possibility of a sequel, noting that in the current nostalgic comedic landscape, a follow-up could be a massive, theater-packing hit if done correctly.

<h2>4. Crazy Rich Asians (2018)</h2>

When Jon M. Chu’s lush, romantic comedy shattered box office records, it seemed like a guaranteed multi-film franchise. After all, author Kevin Kwan wrote an entire trilogy of books following Nick Young and Rachel Chu. Yet, here we are in 2026, and the highly anticipated sequel, China Rich Girlfriend, has spent years stuck in development limbo. With the original cast—including Constance Wu, Henry Golding, and Academy Award-winner Michelle Yeoh—now serving as massive global stars, fans are growing increasingly impatient to return to the opulent, dramatic world of Singapore’s elite.

<h2>5. Alita: Battle Angel (2019)</h2>

Never underestimate the sheer dedication of the “Alita Army.” James Cameron and Robert Rodriguez’s visually groundbreaking cyberpunk epic ended on a massive cliffhanger, with the titular cyborg pointing her sword directly toward the sky city of Zalem. The film barely broke even during its theatrical run, but the fanbase’s relentless, highly organized campaign for a sequel has kept the property alive in the cultural conversation. Both Cameron and Rodriguez have hinted that they have plans for multiple follow-ups, leaving fans eagerly hoping that an official green light is finally approaching.

After two decades of fans begging for a return to the cutthroat halls of Runway magazine, 20th Century Studios finally delivered The Devil Wears Prada 2 this weekend. Audiences responded by dressing in their absolute best and swarming theaters across the globe, generating a massive theatrical turnout that proves the cerulean sweater hasn’t lost an ounce of its cultural power.

<h2>Fast-Tracking to a Billion: The Global Numbers</h2>

Box office analysts knew the legacy sequel was going to be a hit, but very few predicted it would be a certified juggernaut straight out of the gate.

<ul><li>Global Domination: The film raked in a massive $233.6 million worldwide over its opening three-day weekend.</li><li>Domestic Success: In North America alone, the fashion-forward comedy debuted to a stellar $77 million, easily taking the number one spot and leaving the weekend’s competition in the dust.</li><li>Chasing the Original: To put this phenomenal opening into perspective, the original The Devil Wears Prada grossed a total of $326.5 million globally during its entire theatrical run back in 2006. In just three days, the sequel has already earned 72% of the original film’s entire lifetime gross.</li></ul>

Given the incredibly positive word-of-mouth and the robust 76% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, industry insiders expect the film to have incredibly strong legs throughout the month of May.

<h2>A Historic Milestone for Meryl Streep</h2>

It is hard to believe that an actress with three Academy Awards and a career spanning half a century still has major cinematic milestones left to cross, but Miranda Priestly just handed Meryl Streep a brand-new personal best.

The $77 million domestic debut officially marks the biggest opening weekend of Streep’s entire career. It shatters her previous opening weekend records, easily surpassing the debuts of massive musical hits like Into the Woods ($31 million) and Mamma Mia! ($27.7 million).

It is a profound testament to Streep’s enduring star power. She stepped back into one of the most iconic, terrifying, and beloved roles of the 21st century and successfully commanded an audience size that is typically reserved for major superhero blockbusters.

<h2>The Power of the Perfect Reunion</h2>

So, why did The Devil Wears Prada 2 succeed where so many other legacy sequels have stumbled?

The answer lies in the cast. The studio miraculously managed to secure the core four—Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci—ensuring that the sequel wasn’t just a reboot in name only. Audiences weren’t just showing up for the designer clothes; they were showing up to witness the unmatched, razor-sharp chemistry between Miranda, Andy, Emily, and Nigel one more time.

With the sequel heavily addressing the modern, tumultuous reality of digital journalism and the decline of print media, the film managed to feel both incredibly nostalgic and surprisingly timely.

As the box office receipts continue to roll in, one thing is abundantly clear: Miranda Priestly still dictates exactly what the world consumes.

That’s all.

According to Deadline, Jason Statham and David Ayer are reuniting for the thriller “John Doe,” with Ayer directing from a screenplay by Zak Penn.

<h2>‘John Doe’ Expands Statham and Ayer’s Collaboration</h2>

The new film marks the latest chapter in a working relationship that has taken shape over the past two years. Ayer and Statham previously teamed on “The Beekeeper,” the 2024 hit that paired revenge-driven storytelling with a strong commercial performance, followed by “A Working Man” in 2025, which continued their focus on grounded, character-led action narratives.

In “John Doe,” Statham is set to portray a man without a defined identity, a figure who lacks both memory and a documented past. The story follows his attempt to piece together fragments of who he is while evading those connected to his former life. At the center of that search is a single emotional anchor, a woman named Eliza, whose significance becomes clearer as the narrative unfolds.

As details of his past begin to resurface, the character discovers that he was trained for a purpose that has not yet concluded. That realization shifts the picture into a pursuit-driven structure, with multiple parties closing in as he navigates the tension between completing a mission and protecting a personal connection that complicates it.

The project is expected to launch in the Cannes market. With a screenplay from Penn, whose credits include large-scale studio productions like “Ready Player One” and “The Avengers,” “John Doe” aligns with a broader trend of mid-to-high budget action films anchored by established talent.

According to Variety, Ralph Fiennes, Colin Farrell and Wagner Moura are set to headline “Art,” a comedy rooted in Yasmina Reza’s Tony-winning play that dissects modern art and the fault lines within long-standing friendships.

<h2>A Stage Classic Reimagined for the Screen</h2>

The project will be directed by Fernando Meirelles, whose filmography spans titles such as “City of God,” and “The Two Popes.” The screenplay comes from two-time Academy Award winner Christopher Hampton, adapting Reza’s dialogue-driven work into a cinematic format.

The film is expected to launch in the Cannes market, backed by producer Patrick Wachsberger’s 193 banner alongside Legendary, with U.S. rights handled by CAA.

At its core, “Art” follows three long-time friends whose relationship begins to fracture after one of them purchases an expensive, minimalist painting. What starts as a debate over aesthetics evolves into a broader confrontation about values, identity and unresolved tensions.

The casting brings together actors navigating particularly active periods in their careers. Fiennes has moved between film and stage, earning awards attention for “Conclave” and taking on roles in projects ranging from “28 Years Later” to the upcoming “The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping.” Farrell, meanwhile, has recently balanced television and film, with “The Penguin” and “Sugar” adding to a run that includes both franchise work and character-driven features.

Moura enters the project following a significant international breakthrough. His performance in “The Secret Agent” earned him major festival recognition and an Academy Award nomination, marking a milestone for Brazilian actors in that category.
