Ryan Gosling is the man of the moment, after his beloved performance of “I’m Just Ken” at the 2024 Oscars. However, the Canadian actor will leave his “Kenergy” behind to star in the upcoming comedy “The Fall Guy,” alongside Emily Blunt.

The movie, which has its world premiere at this year’s SXSW, is set to arrive in theaters on May 3, 2024. The action comedy is directed by David Leitch, who most recently helmed Brad Pitt’s “The Bullet Train.” He is also known for co-directing the first “John Wick” movie, as well as the Fast & Furious spin-off “Hobbs & Shaw.”

One of the most-anticipated releases of the year, “The Fall Guy” is inspired by the 1980s TV series of the same name. It follows Gosling as stuntman Colt Seavers (Gosling) as he works on a film directed by his ex-girlfriend, Jody Moreno (Emily Blunt). However, things don’t go as planned as the star of the movie disappears.

‘The Fall Guy’ plays with all Gosling’s strengths

The first trailer for the film was released four months ago by Universal, and it has accumulated 20 million views. The teaser showed Gosling as Seavers, a past-his-prime action choreographer who must find the missing star of the film Tom Ryder, played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, to save the movie.

At the 2024 Oscars, Deadline asked Leitch how it was working with Ryan and he said that the actor was ready to give his all to the role. “He was like ‘you know, I’ve been working as a romantic lead, as a comedic lead, and got to do an action movie (The Gray Man), I really want to do a movie that has all of it.’ And that’s what we did with ‘The Fall Guy,’” he said.

“You really get to see him be this sort of ultimate version of himself as an actor. He gets to go everywhere and have so much fun with it, but then brings drama and stakes,” the director added. In truth, the film plays with all the strengths of the actor, who has shined in comedies such as “Crazy, Stupid, Love,” “The Nice Guys,” and, of course, “Barbie.”

Winston Duke, Stephanie Hsu, Teresa Palmer and Hannah Waddingham complete the cast. Meanwhile, Lee Majors, who starred in the original series, will also have a cameo. The movie was filmed back in the fall in Australia, as the country’s government added financing to the project.
