“The Social Network” stands as one of the most impactful films in contemporary cinema. Celebrated among David Fincher’s finest works, it has garnered 173 awards from various organizations, according to IMDb.

Recently, Aaron Sorkin, the Oscar-winning writer behind the movie, confirmed on “The Town” podcast that he’s working on a sequel about Mark Zuckerberg’s enterprise expansion in order to address current social media issues.

When asked about the subject in the past, Sorkin expressed hesitance to proceed in the production without Fincher’s involvement. While conversations between the two initially seemed to stall, the writer’s update on the matter suggest they may have finally found common ground. Could this signal the revival of the project?

When will The Social Network sequel be released?

Although Aaron Sorkin has hinted at the possibility of a sequel to “The Social Network” multiple times, his recent focus on the upcoming “A Few Good Men” indicates that he may not have even finished a first draft of the script yet. Therefore, it might be a while before we receive any updates regarding a potential release date.

David Fincher is also fully occupied with his own projects. Besides being currently immersed in the pre-production of “Lange,” his upcoming drama about photojournalist Dorothea Lange, he’s also yet to commence filming on “Chinatown,” a TV movie that will serve as a prequel for the iconic Roman Polanski’s 1974 noir film.

Even if Sorkin and Fincher had the time to collaborate on the project, it would be challenging for them to make it happen due to its potential controversies. As noted by “Seven” director in an interview with Deadline, revisiting the social media topic fourteen years later would mean opening “a can of worms“.

At the very least, if the writer wishes for Jesse Eisenberg to return, we know he would be up for it. In a 2019 discussion with Indie Wire, he expressed immense gratitude for the opportunity to portray his Oscar-nominated role and talked about his hope for a sequel to materialize:

“I know a lot more about Facebook in 2005 than I do in 2018, but I know enough to know that there should be a sequel. A lot of very interesting, dramatic stuff has happened since the movie ends with settling the lawsuit from the Winklevoss Twins and Eduardo Saverin. I’ve gotten more than one email from (producer) Scott Rudin with an article attached saying, Isn’t it time for a sequel?”
