Anthony Michael Hall Says Turning Down ‘Ferris Bueller’s Day Off’ Caused a “Rupture” With John Hughes

Hall became one of the recognizable young actors of 1980s cinema through his work with John Hughes, but their professional relationship changed after he declined roles in "Ferris Bueller’s Day Off" and "Pretty in Pink."

During a recent appearance on Danielle Fishel’s Teen Beat podcast, as reported by People, Hall explained why he made those choices and how they affected his friendship with Hughes.

Hall was already concerned about being typecast when Hughes approached him about “Pretty in Pink.” After starring in “Sixteen Candles,” the actor felt the new project was too close to territory he had already explored. “It kind of felt like a redo in a way,” Hall recalled.

The decision to reject “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” carried greater consequences because Hughes had written the title role with Hall in mind before Matthew Broderick ultimately took over. Hall said he was focused on expanding his career rather than remaining attached to the same kind of teenage character.

“Unfortunately, you know, what happened was he wanted me to do both films at the time, and I just felt it was important that I kind of move forward, you know?” Hall said. He acknowledged that Hughes was hurt by the decision, something he did not fully anticipate when he made it.

According to Hall, the fallout created a “rupture” between them that lasted for years. He also described Hughes as a sensitive person who took the rejection personally. “I think that that, um, hurt his feelings in a way that I didn’t anticipate,” Hall said.

Despite the distance that followed, Hall remains appreciative of the filmmaker’s role in his early success. He also has no hard feelings toward the stars who ultimately appeared in the movies he declined, emphasizing that he still sees those films as successful projects. “But, listen…we’ve lived long enough to know you have to wish everyone success in life, and you can’t harbor resentment,” he said.

Looking back, Hall maintains that his decision came from a desire to develop professionally rather than dismiss Hughes or the opportunities he had given him. “I was really just trying to move forward professionally. But at the same time, with full acknowledgement of what he’d given me, you know?” he said.
