'The History of Sound' with Paul Mescal and Josh O'Connor: All we know about the historical drama

Fresh from the releases of “All of Us Strangers” and “Foe,” Paul Mescal has been seen in the set of his upcoming movie “The History of Sound,” a World War II drama directed by Oliver Hermanus.

The film is based on a story by Ben Shattuck, which won the Pushcart Prize. Apart from Mescal, the movie stars Josh O’Connor, known for playing young King Charles in “The Crown.” He is also set to appear alongside Zendaya in Lucas Guadagnino’s “Challengers,” set to release in April.

The project was announced back in 2021 and it was set to film in 2022. However, due to scheduling conflicts it didn’t start production until this week. Filming is taking place in the U.K. and Italy. Here’s what you should know about this drama.

What’s the plot of The History of Sound?

The short story follows two young guys named Lionel and David, played by Mescal and O’Connor. They start recording the voices and music of fellow Americans during World War I. Along the way, they learn about their lives and even find love.

According to Elle, one of the film’s producers, Tim Haslam, described Shattuck’s story as a combination of “the epic and intimate minutiae of life, capturing the freedom and truth of human instinct and its conflict with expectation.”

Aside from director Hermanus and Haslam, End Cue’s Andrew Kortschak and Lisa Ciuffetti will be producing with Andrea Roa. Hermanus is known for films such as “Living,” “The Endless River” and “Beauty.” He adapted the script alongside Shattuck.

Is there is a release date?

No, there’s no official release date for the project yet. Per Vareity, the movie doesn’t have a distributor yet. So, it will potentially premiere on festivals first, and then have a wide release.
