After closing the Infinity Saga with Avengers: Endgame, Joe and Anthony Russo stepped away from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, leaving behind a franchise searching for its next defining event.

Their return for Avengers: Doomsday marks one of Marvel Studios’ biggest creative reunions, with the film bringing together the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, the X-Men and Robert Downey Jr. in an unexpected new role as Doctor Doom.

What did Joe Russo say about Avengers: Doomsday’s tone?

Joe Russo described Avengers: Doomsday as having an “aggressive” tone, explaining that the presence of Doctor Doom shaped the movie’s darker and more intense atmosphere.

The director said that Victor von Doom is a character who naturally demands a different approach, with his tragic history and anger influencing the emotional direction of Marvel Studios’ next major crossover event.

His comments came while discussing the return of the Russo Brothers to the Marvel Cinematic Universe after directing Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. According to Joe Russo, Avengers: Doomsday is not simply an attempt to recreate the success of those films, but rather a new chapter with its own identity.

The filmmakers have described the project as a “complete reinvention”, suggesting that the next Avengers story will take a different path from the previous saga finales.

A major reason behind that tonal shift is Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr. after his iconic run as Tony Stark/Iron Man. Russo explained that Doom’s personality and history require a specific atmosphere, with the villain bringing a sense of tragedy, conflict and intensity to the story.

Unlike previous Avengers threats, Doom is not only defined by power but also by ambition, intelligence and personal motivations that make him one of Marvel’s most complex villains.
