After titles like Marvel’s Spider-Man and Darren Aronofsky’s Caught Stealing, the young actors are ready to dive into a new dramatic thriller, this time based on a true story from the 1980s: American Speed.
Tom Holland and Austin Butler have been confirmed as the lead actors in this film, which promises a thrilling mix of chaos and incredible car racing sequences. The stars will portray the Whittington brothers, Don and Bill.
Oscar-winning producer Charles Roven (Uncharted, Oppenheimer and Wonder Woman) will be in charge of the production under his Atlas Entertainment banner. So far, no director or screenwriter has been confirmed.
What is American Speed about?
“American Speed” is based on a true story and follows the lives of the famous Whittington brothers (Don and Bill), who were once known for their talent on the racetrack, but a scandal turned them into criminals.
They competed in prestigious events like the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the Indianapolis 500. In fact, they even took home the victory at Le Mans in 1979 as part of the Porsche 935 team, becoming well-known figures.
However, their fame was largely due to their involvement in a drug trafficking scandal, as they funded their racing careers with money earned from smuggling marijuana, primarily from Colombia.
Who is the cast of American Speed?
As of September 2024, only Tom Holland and Austin Butler have been confirmed as part of the cast of the action drama, taking on the roles of brothers Don and Bill Whittington, who were race car drivers in the 1980s.
It is expected that in the coming weeks more information will be available about the stars who have entered negotiations for the project, as it is still quite early since it is in pre-production.
