Is Words of War based on a true story?
That’s right! The political thriller is based on the true story of journalist Anna Politkovskaya’s fight for press freedom in Russia. Her work addressed issues of corruption and abuse of power within Putin’s government.
She worked for the newspaper Novaya Gazeta, where she was noted for her critical coverage of the Second Chechen War and the human rights violations perpetrated by Russian forces in Chechnya.
Her reports included details about torture, murders, and other abuses committed by Russian security forces. The journalist did not hesitate to confront the established power, which earned her both admirers and enemies.
Undoubtedly, she left a lasting legacy as a defender of human rights and press freedom. Her work has been widely recognized and has influenced awareness about the situation in Chechnya and the state of the press in Russia.
What is Words of War about?
The anticipated movie tells the story of the brave crusade of journalist Anna Politkovskaya, who fights for an independent voice in Putin’s Russia. Each scene will highlight the importance of a free press in society.
Concourse’s CEO, Matthew Shreder, spoke with Deadline about how the studios involved—Rolling Pictures, Good Films Collective and Concourse Media—approached the story to bring the project to fruition. He stated:
“The relevance of Anna’s story in today’s evolving geopolitical landscape is striking, and it’s more important than ever to ensure her story is told. Words of War is a gripping political thriller filled with intensity that will intrigue and enlighten audiences“.
