Among the new shows making a splash is “The Regime.” This political satire premiered on Max on Sunday, March 3rd, and has already become the third most-watched series on the platform worldwide, according to FlixPatrol.

Starring Oscar-winner Kate Winslet as Chancellor Elena Vernham, the leader of a fictional authoritarian state in Europe, the series depicts her paranoia about staying in power when confronted by a US emissary.

Written by Will Tracy, known for his work on the successful HBO drama “Succession,” and “The Menu,” “The Regime” was directed and executive produced by Stephen Frears (“The Grifters,” “The Queen”) and Jessica Hobbs (“The Crown”).

The Regime, a political commentary of authoritarian leaders

The series follows Winslet’s Chancellor as she tries to prove her credibility to an American US emissary, portrayed by Martha Plimpton. However, she only confides in a new soldier, Herbert Zuback (Matthias Schoenaerts).

While the series received mixed reviews (holding a 54% score on Rotten Tomatoes), some critics, like Alison Herman writing for Variety, praised Winslet’s commanding charisma and the show’s political commentary.

She particularly praised the “especially skeptical toward American foreign policy, highlighting how global superpowers use smaller countries as client states whether or not they align with democratic values.”
