The remake arrived in theaters on July 10 with Johnson reprising Maui and Catherine Laga’aia making her feature film debut as Moana. Directed by Thomas Kail, the movie is the first live-action entry in the franchise and was produced on a reported budget of $250 million.

Its $43 million domestic opening also placed it among the lower opening weekends for a Disney live-action adaptation.



The critical response has been similarly uneven. “Moana” currently holds a 32% critics’ approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while audiences surveyed by CinemaScore gave it an A- grade. Metacritic has it at 42 out of 100 from critics, putting the remake firmly in the mixed reception category. Johnson, for his part, kept his response measured. “If you love it, great. If you don’t, no problem,” he said.

That distinction matters because “The Simpsons” is already guaranteed to reach the milestone Cartwright mentioned. The title was renewed for four additional seasons in 2025, taking it through Season 40. The animated sitcom has also reached a remarkable place in television history, having aired more than 800 episodes since its December 1989 debut. It remains the longest-running American animated series and the longest-running American scripted primetime television series.



Cartwright herself does not appear particularly interested in putting a hard stop on the Springfield story. When asked whether she would continue if the hit moved beyond Season 40, she responded, “Yeah, we’ll keep going then,” before giving an even more definitive answer when Rosenbaum asked whether she would stay as long as the producers wanted. “Absolutely.” Cartwright has been part of the show’s central voice cast since its beginning and remains the voice of Bart, as well as Maggie, Nelson Muntz, Ralph Wiggum and other characters.



There is also a major reason why Cartwright’s prediction should not be mistaken for a confirmed endpoint. “The Simpsons” has been built around a deliberately flexible status quo in which the characters do not age and most episodes return the family to its familiar circumstances. That structure has allowed the series to keep going for decades without needing to move its central characters toward a conventional conclusion.



For now, the show has plenty left on its schedule. Season 38 is set to continue the production’s unprecedented run, while the franchise is also expanding back onto the big screen with a sequel to “The Simpsons Movie” planned for 2027. That means Cartwright’s Season 40 prediction is less a sign that an ending has been decided than an unusually precise guess about where television’s most durable animated family might eventually stop.

The production ultimately found a solution by making Sandy an Australian transfer student, allowing Newton-John to use her natural accent.



A screen test with John Travolta helped settle the question of whether the two performers could work together. Travolta, who was 23 at the time, was already attached to play Danny Zuko, and the test gave Newton-John an opportunity to see how the central pairing would work before she committed to the picture.



The decision paid off for both the flick and Newton-John. Released in 1978, “Grease” became the year’s highest-grossing film and turned its central romance into one of the defining movie musicals of its era. Its soundtrack was also a major success, with “You’re the One That I Want” and “Summer Nights” becoming major hits for Newton-John and Travolta.

Sink also shared what has stood out to her as she has explored the mutant team in greater depth. “The more I’ve gotten into it and researched, what makes them special is that they are all incredibly flawed and maybe have done bad things,” she said.



Rather than presenting straightforward heroes, Sink believes those personal struggles are central to the team’s appeal. “That makes them more compelling, complex characters and a more complex hero if they don’t start out that way,” she said.
