“When I told Kevin Feige I didn’t think I was the right fit for that, he mentioned ‘Spidey’ in the room, which was a huge relief to me because I thought he’d be like, ‘OK, see you later’”, he said when discussing the unexpected transition from the Avengers project to Spider-Man’s next chapter.
He was originally attached to direct Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, the fifth Avengers film planned as part of the Multiverse Saga. As Marvel reshaped the project following major changes behind the scenes, including the shift toward Avengers: Doomsday and Doctor Doom becoming the franchise’s next major threat, Cretton moved toward a different corner of the MCU.
The director explained that his approach to filmmaking depends on finding an emotional connection with the material rather than simply taking on the biggest possible franchise assignment. For Cretton, the opportunity to continue Peter Parker’s story offered a different kind of challenge: a more intimate character journey after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home.
That creative shift also reassured Cretton that his relationship with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige remained strong. Instead of viewing his departure from the Avengers project as a setback, the filmmaker described Feige’s mention of Spider-Man as a sign that Marvel still saw a place for his vision within the MCU.
