In a lengthy post shared on X on August 7, the singer reflected on her sons, her parents, her years as a performer and her desire to reconnect with the person she once was. She also addressed her relationship with faith and her complicated feelings about the entertainment industry.
Britney Spears Says She Lost Sight of Who She Really Was
Spears began her post by sharing a photo of her two sons, Sean Preston and Jayden James, before turning to memories of her own childhood and the years that followed. She described herself as “unbelievably intelligent” when she was younger and said she was once “always so eager to please and hungry for life.” She added, “I was unbelievably passionate about everything,” as she recalled a version of herself that she feels became difficult to recognize.

The singer was particularly direct about the difference between that younger version of herself and the person she became during her years in the entertainment industry. “I never got to be me, the real Spears,” she wrote. Spears also said, “Not one time in those 15 years was it ever me,” before adding, “I was shamed, embarrassed, and forced to do all of it.”
Spears connected those memories to the way she believes her personality and choices were controlled. “I feel like the saying ‘when I’m bad I’m BETTER’ is pretty f*****g rad,” she wrote. She then questioned why her efforts to improve herself could have been viewed negatively, asking, “But why was me being better a threat to the country and my own family?”
Her reflections also touched on the emotional cost of losing those years. “I miss the excitement in my eyes being alive when I was younger,” Spears wrote. She continued, “I will never get those years back and I’m proud of bringing it up because it’s honestly unbelievably sad.” She also questioned the nature of celebrity itself, writing, “But what if fame is an illusion? What if none of it is real?”
Spears made clear that she no longer sees the entertainment industry in the same way. “I don’t want to be in the business and frankly the thought of the business,” she wrote, while recalling that her mindset was different when she performed in the past. She also looked toward a life outside celebrity, writing that she has met “the most interesting, intelligent, inspirational people who aren’t famous at all” and would “much rather have a coffee with them.”
Toward the end of the post, Spears turned her attention back to what she wants for herself now. “I want to get closer to God and get my heart in its most beautiful, spiritual way and have dreams again,” she wrote. After years in which her identity was closely tied to being Britney Spears the pop star, she offered a much simpler description of who she considers herself to be today: “I’m simply mamma now.”
