Sam Neill’s Role Remains a Mystery as ‘The Legend of Zelda’ Cast Grows

Neill’s appearance in “The Legend of Zelda” comes after production wrapped in April, months before the actor died on July 13 at the age of 78. The role has not been identified, leaving fans to speculate about how he will fit into the world of Hyrule. His casting joins a lineup led by Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link and Bo Bragason as Princess Zelda.

The title is directed by Wes Ball from a screenplay by T. S. Nowlin. Produced by Nintendo, Columbia Pictures, OddBall Entertainment, and Arad Productions, the adaptation marks the first live-action feature based on Nintendo’s long-running fantasy franchise. Shigeru Miyamoto and Avi Arad are producing the project, which has been in development for several years before officially moving forward in 2023.

Neill is also expected to be seen posthumously in “Godzilla x Kong: Supernova” and the romantic comedy “The Last Resort,” making 2027 a year that will feature several of his final completed performances. The actor, best known internationally for the “Jurassic Park” franchise, remained active in film and television until shortly before his death.

Alongside the news of Neill’s casting, additional cast members have also emerged. Uli Latukefu is set to portray Ganondorf, while Dichen Lachman will play Impa. Yvonne Strahovski has also joined the production in an undisclosed queen role. Despite the expanding cast list, Nintendo and Sony have continued to keep the movie’s story largely under wraps ahead of its planned April 30, 2027 theatrical release.
