The director explained that Jean Grey was one of the possible ideas considered for the movie, but once Sink became part of the conversation, he immediately felt her presence matched the direction of Peter Parker’s next chapter.
“I’m not personally trying to set up anything for Kevin. I just want the best story possible that makes sense for Spidey, and Jean Grey was one of the options on the table. And then when we brought up Sadie Sink, I was just like, ‘Oh, that feels perfect for this movie’”, he explained.
The decision was also influenced by the filmmaker’s previous experience with Sink. Before bringing her into the MCU, he had already worked with the actress on The Glass Castle, creating a professional connection that helped him understand the qualities she could bring to a major franchise project.
For Cretton, the casting was less about checking a box in Marvel’s expanding universe and more about finding an actor who could serve the emotional core of Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
