Speaking with Entertainment Tonight at San Diego Comic-Con 2026, the filmmakers were asked whether Scarlet Witch and Captain Marvel would be part of the upcoming blockbuster. Rather than confirming or denying anything, they offered a characteristically cryptic response that has fans debating the picture’s biggest remaining surprises.

The Russo Brothers Keep Marvel Fans Guessing About ‘Avengers: Doomsday’

With Marvel’s next crossover already confirmed to unite heroes from multiple universes against Doctor Doom, nearly every conversation surrounding “Avengers: Doomsday” has turned into a guessing game over who else might be hiding from the official cast list. That made the Russo Brothers’ latest interview one of the most talked-about moments to come out of Comic-Con.

When Entertainment Tonight asked whether Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch or Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel could appear in the film, the directors stayed intentionally elusive. Instead of confirming or denying either character, they simply replied, “There are always more surprises.”

The brief response was enough to reignite speculation surrounding both heroes. Wanda Maximoff has been considered dead within the MCU since the events of “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” though fans have continued to question whether her apparent sacrifice marks the end of her story. Captain Marvel, meanwhile, remains active in Marvel’s cosmic storyline after “The Marvels,” making her absence from official “Doomsday” announcements another frequent topic of discussion.

The secrecy is hardly surprising given the scale of the project. “Avengers: Doomsday” is set to bring together characters from the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, the X-Men, Wakanda, and other corners of the multiverse in a story centered on Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom. Marvel has already revealed an extensive ensemble, but the studio has repeatedly hinted that additional casting announcements are still being kept under wraps.
