When “Caddyshack” was filmed in 1979, the screenplay gave Bill Murray very little guidance for the scene that would eventually become one of the movie’s signature moments. Rather than providing dialogue, the script simply described Carl Spackler practicing his golf swing while trimming flowers around the course.

Director Harold Ramis encouraged Murray to build the scene himself. Before the cameras rolled, he reportedly asked the actor to imagine the kind of sports fantasy he might narrate in his own head. Murray requested a few rows of chrysanthemums for the setup and then launched into the now-famous “Cinderella story” commentary, inventing the entire speech as the cameras recorded.
The sequence was completed in a single take and became one of the film’s defining moments. Murray’s largely improvised performance fit the free-flowing atmosphere of the production, where several cast members, including Chevy Chase and Rodney Dangerfield, frequently departed from the script to shape their characters.
