Melissa Barrera stands out as one of the most important Mexican actresses of her generation. After establishing herself in Mexico through popular telenovelas like “Siempre Tuya Acapulco” and “Tanto Amor”, she ventured to the United States in 2017 to pursue success in Hollywood blockbusters.

Her breakthrough arrived when she landed the role of Vanessa in John M. Chu’s “In the Heights”, the cinematic adaptation of the beloved stage play. Melissa’s acting and singing skills in the musical earned her nominations from both the Hollywood Critics Association and the Satellite Awards.

However, it was through her involvement in the latest installments of the “Scream” franchise that she catapulted to celebrity status. Her role as a producer for the horror film “Bed Rest” also garnered significant attention, and she seems very commited to continue producing. Here, explore everything about Melissa Barrera’s upcoming movies and series.

What are Melissa Barrera’s next projects?

The One – TBA

Not much is known about “The One”, but with its talented cast and intriguing plot, the film shows promising signs of success. Accompanied by Nicholas Hoult and Lana Condor, Melissa Barrera portrays a woman who tries to find love in a reality dating show that goes tragically wrong.

This will mark the “Abigail” actress’s sixth incursion into the horror genre. Gradually, she is solidifying her position in the entertainment industry as both a scream queen and a final girl.

The movie is produced by Sacha Ben Harroche, the mastermind behind the Oscar-winning film “Sound of Metal”. According to IMDb, filming for the story hasn’t started yet, so we’ll likely have to wait until next year for its release.

The Collaboration – 2024

“The Collaboration” is the most radical project in Melissa Barrera filmography until now. Kwame Kwei-Armah biographical drama film is an adaptation from the homonym stage play created by Anthony McCarten that run in West End and Broadway between 2022 and 2023.

Its story focuses on the close friendship and creative teamwork of Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat. Melissa stars as Maya, a lead character possibly related to the writer Maya Angelou, who collaborated with Basquiat on the illustrations for her famous book “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me”.

The film is currently in post-production, indicating that a release date is imminent. This installment marks the second chapter of McCarten’s “Worship Trilogy”, which delves into society’s fixation on money, art and religion.

God’s Country – 2024

“God’s Country” is Melissa Barrera’s second work as a producer. Originally set to play the main part, scheduling conflicts led to her replacement by María Bakalova, famous for starring in the “Borat” franchise.

So far, details about the movie’s storyline have been quite vague. The official synopsis reveals that the production is a horror story about the American Dream being torn to pieces through the relationship of a Salvadoran woman and her fiancé from Kentucky.

Like “The One”, this film is also in the pre-production stage. Melissa doesn’t have many future projects close to release, but her most recent movie, “Abigail”, just hit cinemas worldwide yesterday.

Your Monster – TBA

“Your Monster” has already had screenings at some key festivals in the United States, but an official release date for the public hasn’t been announced yet.

The plot revolves around Laura Franco, an actress who falls in love with a monster living in her closet, portrayed by Tommy Dewey. Its director, Caroline Lindy, presents the movie as romantic, comedic, and horrific at the same time.

Melissa Barrera’s upcoming projects have one thing in common: they are all indie productions. In an interview with Collider to promote “Your Monster”, she expressed her love for this kind of films, stating that “smaller films are more creatively satisfying in a way because you get a lot more say, and it’s like a real team effort”.
