“Coda” has been acclaimed by critics as one of the most significant films addressing themes related to the deaf. Its impact is enduring, reflected in its return to the Top 10 ranking on Apple TV+ in the United States.

The film is an English-language remake of the 2014 French-Belgian “La Famille Bélier.” It was recognized as one of the Top 10 films of 2021 by the American Film Institute and has been celebrated as one of the best films of the 2020s.

The picture follows Ruby, a 17-year-old who is the only hearing member of a deaf family. Ruby assists her parents and brother in their fishing business in Gloucester, Massachusetts, but faces a dilemma when her aspirations may require her to reduce her support for the family.

Featuring deaf actors in deaf roles, alongside the actress portraying Ruby, who communicate using American Sign Language, “Coda” has been widely praised for its authentic representation. Critics have highlighted its significance for the deaf community and for further understanding of their problematics.

The title marked a significant milestone for Apple TV+, making it the first streamer to win an Academy Award for Best Picture. This achievement challenged perceptions about streaming services’ ability to compete with traditional production companies.
