With the awards season 2024 already underway, many people are looking for ways to watch some of the most talked-about films to win some of the major trophies this year. One of them is “The Holdovers,” by Alexander Payne. The movie is already available to stream on Peacock, as well as to buy or rent on Prime Video, Apple TV, and YouTube TV.
The film, written by David Hemingson, was released this past autumn, and it quickly became a favorite in the race to the Oscars. The movie follows a cranky New England school teacher, played by Paul Giamatti, who is forced to watch over the kids who can’t go home for the holidays.
To many critics, the movie is already a Christmas classic. Giamatti’s performance has been highly-praised, and he could take several trophies this season. He stars opposite Dominic Sessa, who made his feature debut and has also received critical acclaim, and Da’Vine Joy Randolph, who has also collected compliments and trophies.
The Holdovers could be a dark horse during the awards season
After its premiere in October, “The Holdovers” has collected several accolades such as being named one of the Top 10 films of the year by the National Board of Review. The same organization gave recognitions to Giamatti, Randolph and Hemingson.
Giamatti and Randolph are up for Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards, and both are predicted to get nominations for the Oscars. In fact, Randolph is also predicted to be the favorite to win the statuette, according to Variety.
Also, with Barbie out of the race for original screenplay, the movie’s chances to win the category at the Oscars have increased. However, the race is still close with many favorites such as Past Lives, Anatomy of a Fall or May December also being strong contenders.
What was the film location for ‘The Holdovers’?
The movie is set in the 1970s, and many viewers have wondered where it was filmed. Especially as most of the scenes take place in a New England boarding school. The film was entirely shot in Massachusetts, with several locations used: Deerfield Academy, Northfield Mount Hermon School, St. Mark’s School and more.
