Sci-fi and horror make one of the most prolific genre blends. A prime example is “Significant Other,” which, despite its release on Paramount+ two years ago, currently ranks in the Top 10 of the most-watched movies worldwide on the platform.
According to Deadline, Paramount Players emerged victorious in a fierce bidding war for the rights to this film. It’s not difficult to discern what was appealing to them. Not only did the project enlist the directorial duo Dan Berk and Robert Olsen, renowned in the indie circuit for their thriller “Body,” but it also starred Maika Monroe, one of the emerging scream queens of this generation.
The production company managed to bring the film to fruition in less than a year, and while it garnered mixed reviews from critics, it has become an enduring hit in the sci-fi catalog. Some of its viewers even hailed its plot twist as one of the best among horror streaming productions.
Significant Other became Top 3 on Paramount+ worldwide
With the highly anticipated release of “Longlegs,” the upcoming horror film starring Maika Monroe, “Significant Other” has surged back into the spotlight. Currently, its the Top 3 movie on Paramount+ worldwide.
Remarkably, it has outperformed “Smile” by a significant margin, despite it being an everlasting trend on the platform. At the moment, Olsen’s picture is battling with “Transformers: The Last Knight” for the second spot in the rankings. This is notable given the surge in views the Michael Bay franchise has experienced following the release of the trailer for “Transformers One.”
The film centers around Harry and Ruth, a couple grappling with relationship issues who embark on a backpacking trip in the Pacific Northwest in an attempt to salvage their love. During their journey, they encounter an alien lifeform resulting from a meteor strike, which harbors malevolent intentions.
Monroe shines as the film’s lead, supported by Jake Lacy as her co-star. The ensemble cast includes Matthew Yang King, Dana Green, Loudon McCleery, and Teal Sherer.
In an interview with TV Insider, Dan Berk revealed that he pitched “Significant Other” to Paramount+ as a blend of “Under The Skin” and “The One I Love.” Much of its success stems from being a fusion of romance, horror, sci-fi, and even a touch of comedy.
