No matter how old or new, horror films are always popular on streaming platforms. Thus, it’s not strange to see “Haunter” ranking as the #2 movie worldwide on Paramount+, despite being released more than a decade ago.
The film was directed by Vincenzo Natali, known for claustrophobic horror productions such as “Cube” and “In the Tall Grass.” One of his recent renowned works was directing an episode of “Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities.”
Although “Haunter” received a very short theatrical release and went almost straight to home video, it has gained quite an audience. Here’s everything you need to know.
‘Haunter’ is the No. 2 movie on Paramount+ worldwide
As is the case with the recent “Cobweb” by Samuel Bodin, horror fans seem to love stories about ghosts who return to terrorize the new owners of their house. That trope is behind “Haunter,” currently the No. 2 movie worldwide on Paramount+.
Amazingly, it has managed to surpass “South Park: Joining the Panderverse,” despite it being one of the franchise’s most beloved movies. Right now, it’s in a neck-and-neck competition with “Finestkind” for the top spot on the global ranking.
Lisa Johnson, a teenage ghost in northern Ontario, realizes she’s dead and stuck on the day her family was murdered in 1985. As she discovers her ability to contact people in different timelines, a pale man warns her to stop. Ignoring him, she uses belongings from other victims to connect with Olivia, a future resident destined to become the house’s next victim.
The protagonist is played by Abigail Breslin, who you may recognize as Olive from “Little Miss Sunshine.” The rest of the cast includes Peter Outerbridge, Michelle Nolden, Stephen McHattie, Peter DaCunha, and Samantha Weinstein.
Although the movie hasn’t been highly praised by critics, the public has loved it, stating that it is an excellent film despite being made on a very low budget.
