This week on Netflix US, the most-watched movie is the action thriller “American Assassin” (as for Feb. 7th). According to FlixPatrol, the film, starring Dylan O’Brien and Michael Keaton, has surpassed other titles such as “The Vow” and “Orion and the Dark,” which are second and third on the most streamed list, respectively.
“American Assassin” was first released in 2017, and it was directed by Michael Cuesta. Cuesta is known for movies like “L.I.E” (2001) and “Kill the Messenger” (2014). It also stars Sanaa Lathan, Shiva Negar, and Taylor Kitsch.
The movie was written by Stephen Schiff, Michael Finch, Edward Zwick, and Marshall Herskovitz. While the movie had a lukewarm reception back in the day, it’s now being embraced by American audiences. Here’s what you need to know about the film.
What is American Assassin about?
The plot of “American Assassin” follows Mitch Rapp, portrayed by O’Brien, a young man whose life is turned upside down when he witnesses the death of his fiancée in a terrorist attack. Consumed by grief and a desire for revenge, Mitch becomes determined to hunt down those responsible.
In his quest for justice, Mitch catches the attention of the CIA, who see his potential as an agent. Under the guidance of Cold War veteran Stan Hurley, played by Keaton, Mitch undergoes intense training.
As Mitch delves deeper into the world of counterterrorism, he uncovers a sinister plot involving a dangerous mercenary named Ghost, portrayed by Kitsch, who harbors a personal vendetta against Stan. With the threat of a nuclear attack looming, Mitch and his team must race against time to stop Ghost and prevent a catastrophic disaster.
Is it based on a true story?
No. The film is based on Vince Flynn’s 2010 novel of the same name. Actually, the first plans for an adaptation were for the 2008’s novel “Consent to Kill,” which would have been directed by Antonie Faqua. However, CBS Films decided to go with the prequel instead, to tackle Rapp’s origin story.
