“Maxton Hall,” a new series based on Mona Kasten’s novel “Save Me,” has become the number one show on Prime Video within days of its release. Starring Harriet Herbig-Matten, the series mixes romance and drama in an enemies-to-lovers tale against the backdrop of a private boarding school.
Herbig-Matten stars as Ruby Bell, a shy, humble student who enters the prestigious Maxton Hall, a private school which will help her fulfill her dream of entering Oxford. However, she will discover a secret that will put her on James Beaufort’s (Damian Hardung) radar, one of the wealthiest kids in school, and he won’t leave her alone until he gets what he wants.
Filmed in some of the most beautiful locations in Germany and England, the series has caught the attention of many fans of teen romance. However, while we wait for a second season of the series, you can watch these movies that will remind you of “Maxton Hall: The World Between Us.”
Movies to watch if you like Prime Video’s “Maxton Hall”
Wild Child (2008)
Streaming on: Starz
Starring Emma Roberts and Alex Pettyfer, “Wild Child” will remind you of “Maxton Hall” thanks to the boarding school setting, the rich-pretentious teenagers, and, of course, a relatable protagonist.
The movie follows the rebellious sixteen-year-old Poppy (Roberts), who is sent to a boarding school in England. There, she clashes with the headmistress (Natasha Richardson) and a class full of girls who will not tolerate her selfishness.
Old Boys (2018)
Streaming on: Buy/Rent Apple, Amazon, Youtube or Google
The film has some familiar faces, such as The Little Mermaid’s prince Jonah Hauer-King. It also stars Alex Lawther and Pauline Ettiene. The movie will remind you of “Maxton Hall” thanks to its charming love story set in a boarding school in England.
However, “Old Boys” is set in the 1980s. The story follows Amberson (Lawther), an awkward, artistic student navigating the hierarchy of Caldermount school. When a charismatic new French teacher, accompanied by his cool daughter Agnes (Etienne), arrives, the atmosphere shifts. Amberson, unable to express his feelings directly, helps the popular Winchester (Hauer-King) win her over with letters.
Dirty Dancing (1987)
Streaming on: Buy/Rent Apple, Amazon, Youtube or Google
While not set in a boarding school and not even during school time, “Dirty Dancing” touches many of the same themes as “Maxton Hall”: enemies-to-lovers, social class, teen pregnancy, a controlling family. Plus, the choreography is truly iconic.
If you haven’t watched this classic, it follows Frances “Baby” Houseman (Jennifer Grey), who goes to a vacation resort with her family and starts a romance with the dance instructor Johnny Castle (Swayze) without her parents’ knowledge.
Vampire Academy (2014)
Streaming on: Tubi (free)
Another film based on a popular teen book, “Vampire Academy” not only has the romance, the friendship and the amazing landscapes of a boarding school like “Maxton Hall,” it also has the supernatural element such as vampires, and other mythical creatures.
The film stars Zoey Deutch as Rose Hathaway, a human/vampire hybrid, who attends St. Vladimir’s Academy with her best friend Lissa (Lucy Fry), a princess of the Moroi, peaceful vampires. However, Rose trains with mentor (Danila Kozlovsky) to guarantee her place as Lissa’s guardian, although she may have to sacrifice everything to protect her from enemies.
Saltburn (2023)
Streaming on: Prime Video
Dark secrets? Check. Handsome love interest? Check. Eccentric rich families? Check. “Saltburn” might be a little more spicy than “Maxton Hall,” but it will also show you that when it comes to rich families, not everything is what it seems.
Starring Barry Keoughan and Jacob Elordi, the movie was one of the most divisive, but talked about films of 2023. Written and directed by Emerald Fennell, it certainly has some shocking moments but will take you on a wild ride to the 2000s.
She’s The Man (2006)
Streaming on: Paramount+, Hoopla
We grant that it’s less dramatic than “Maxton Hall,” but it’s still a classic rom-com from the 2000s. If you want to watch something romantic but lighthearted, this sports comedy is perfect for you.
Starring Amanda Bynes and Channing Tatum, the films follows Violet, a talented soccer player who pretends to be her brother in a prestigious boarding school to play in the boys’ team and show that girls can also be great players.
Cruel Intentions (1999)
Streaming on: Freevee
This cult-classic has some similarities with “Maxton Hall,” including two siblings who will try to do whatever it takes to get their own way, including manipulating an innocent girl… Until one of them falls in love with her. Like, if you know, you know.
Starring Reese Witherspoon, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe, and Selma Blair, the film follows spiteful stepsiblings Kathryn Merteuil (Gellar) and Sebastian Valmont (Phillippe) as they wage a twisted game of deception against Annette Hargrove (Witherspoon) and Cecile Caldwell (Blair) at their elite Manhattan prep school.
