Austin Butler is not only one of the actors of the moment but has experienced a rather meteoric rise to fame. Since his portrayal in the Elvis biopic, he has consistently been in front of cameras and in the public eye.
Thanks to his performance as the King of Rock N’ Roll, the star earned his first Oscar nomination, becoming one of the most promising talents of the new generation in the industry.
Soon, we will see him starring in significant new projects, which will be helmed by some of the most renowned and established filmmakers. Here, check out what his upcoming series and movies are…
What are Austin Butler’s next projects?
City On Fire | TBA
City on Fire is the new crime film that will feature Austin as its protagonist, in the role of Danny Ryan. Although it is currently in post-production, some details about the project, such as its plot and screenwriter, have already been revealed.
The script was developed by Don Winslow (Savages and The Death and Life of Bobby Z), who is also responsible for the novels on which the film is based. The actor himself will produce a film that, if all goes well, could be the beginning of a new franchise.
The story is set in the mid-1980s and follows Danny Ryan, who is forced to transform from a street soldier into a ruthless commander to save his loved ones. Due to this, he plans to create a dynasty or perish in the attempt while battling against the mafia, the police and the government.
Deadline confirmed on April 16th that Justin Kuritzkes, the writer of “Challengers” with Zendaya, will be responsible for writing the script for the adaptation, which will also be produced by Butler and focuses on two criminal empires in a brutal war.
Eddington | 2025
Not much is known yet about Eddington, the upcoming drama featuring Butler in the cast. However, it has been confirmed that the film will be directed and written by Ari Aster, known as one of the best filmmakers of the generation.
Austin will share the screen with two prominent figures: Joaquin Phoenix and Candice Bergen. So far, they are the only ones confirmed to carry out the plot, which has been described as a “Film noir ensemble western dark comedy”.
The actor will have a small role in the movie, but it has not been confirmed who it will be or if it will be significant. In addition to the two main stars, the cast includes Emma Stone and Pedro Pascal.
The western, set during the pandemic, is scheduled to be released at some point in 2025, as filming is set to begin in March 2024. It is anticipated that once production begins, more details will be revealed.
Caught Stealing | TBA
Caught Stealing, Darren Aronofsky’s crime thriller will follow Hank Thompson, a burned-out former baseball player, as he’s unwittingly plunged into a wild fight for survival in the downtown criminal underworld of ‘90s NYC.
The movie is being written by Charlie Huston (Already Dead, Catchpenny: A Novel and Moon Knight Omnibus), based on his book of the same name. Protozoa produces and Sony will distribute.
Heat 2 | TBA
It seems that everything indicates that Austin Butler will be the one to replace Val Kilmer‘s character in the upcoming Heat 2, directed by Michael Mann. The young actor has been seen undergoing gun training with Taran Tactical.
The filmmaker in charge of the project also stated that he wants Adam Driver as a young version of Robert De Niro‘s character. Nearly 30 years later, the action thriller seems to be making a comeback on the big screen.
The sequel, functioning as a prequel, is based on the novel of the same name co-written by Mann and Meg Gardiner. It will follow McCauley, Chris Shiherlis and Vincent Hanna in the years leading up to the Los Angeles crime saga, narrating what happens to the characters in the years following.
“Meg Gardiner and I wrote the novel Heat 2, which came out just as we were shooting Ferrari. It was very successful. I plan to shoot that next“, the director confessed during an interview, as reported by Deadline. The release date has not been confirmed yet.
American Speed | TBA
Tom Holland and Austin are two of the most sought-after actors of the new generation, so seeing a project that brings them together is truly exciting, especially if it’s from Charles Roven and Atlas Entertainment.
Apparently, the young stars will portray two drug-smuggling brothers in the upcoming untitled film, which has no screenwriter or director yet, according to The InSneider.
The story of “American Speed” is based on real events and the Texan brothers, Dale and Bill Whittington, who were race car drivers. Both competed in Le Mans and several times in the Indy 500, which is what they are known for.
The same outlet reported that Amazon has already made an offer to Warner Bros. and Paramount, both of whom are very interested in the drama, which is currently in pre-production.
