What is The Narrow Road to the Deep North about?

The story is set during World War II and primarily follows the experiences of an Australian surgeon named Dorrigo Evans. He becomes a prisoner of war (POW) after the fall of Singapore to the Japanese in 1942.

There, he is forced to work on the construction of the Burma Railway, also known as the “Death Railway”, which was famous for its harsh conditions and high mortality rate among the prisoners of war.

Throughout the novel, the author explores themes of love, war, memory, and the human spirit’s capacity for both cruelty and resilience. The narrative is richly structured, moving back and forth in time, revealing the complexities of Evans’ life and relationships before, during and after the war.
