Role Play,” an action comedy thriller with Kayley Cuoco and David Oyelowo, is currently the number 1 movie on Prime Video in the US, according to FlixPatrol, an specialized website that collects viewership data. The film reached the top position only three days after its release on Friday, Jan. 12th.

In the United States, the film has surpassed popular titles such as Emerald Fennell’s “Saltburn,” which had been the most watched film on the platform since its release on streaming back on Dec. 22.

However, globally, “Saltburn” is still the most popular film on the platform, while “Role Play” is the second most-watched movie. The third spot on Prime Video worldwide is for “Foe,” starring Paul Mescal and Saoirse Ronan. Here’s what you need to know about this crime thriller.

‘Role Play,’ the mystery thriller triumphing on Prime Video

Cuoco, who also produces the film, stars as Emma, an internationally wanted contract killer living under a false name in suburban New Jersey and married for 7 years to Dave (Oyelowo). However, when they attempted to “role play” in New York City for their wedding anniversary, things go awry as another assassin (Bill Nighy) recognizes Emma.

Directed by Thomas Vincent and written by Seth Owen, the rest of the cast also includes Rudi Dharmalingam and Connie Nielsen. Despite its popularity on the platform, the movie received mostly negative reviews from critics, scoring a 19% of approval on Rotten Tomatoes.

Variety said that the movie “thankfully” doesn’t take itself too seriously, especially as its protagonist is “an immorally ruthless hitwoman”. Meanwhile, The Hollywood Reporter, in a mostly negative review in which they criticize the script and direction, gave Cuoco and Oyelowo positive notes for their performances.

Other productions by Kaley Cuoco

Cuoco, who has been nominated for an Emmy and a Golden Globe for her role in “The Flight Attendant,” has also produced the last two projects she has been in: a Peacock series titled “Based on a True Story,” and the rom-com “Meet Cute,” which also stars Pete Davidson.

In “Based on a True Story,” Cuoco plays a real estate agent who is obsessed with true crime and teams up with a serial killer. The show received positive reviews, and it has been renewed for a second season.
